It never occurred to me to put a lock on our checked baggage. Is this something we should do so that we know if someone opened it? I don't even know if we have any small padlocks.

Back in 1998 we went to my mother in laws and I usually always take a pillow with me (I have a screwed up neck and can't use a lot of pillows) We had checked 2 bags one a big red duffle bag and a big suit case. when we were at the baggage claim we were waiting for our bags and the first one came husband took it off the carousal and we waited for the duffle bag as we were waiting I saw a red bag coming on the carousal and somebody picked it up and walked out the front doors. I looked at my husband and said that person just walked off with our bag. we tried to follow him/her but when we got outside they were gone. we reported it to the lost luggage people but they just told us to file a claim. so we filled out the paper work. went home and they called us a couple days later and told us we needed to make a itemized list of everything in the bag. Well, the most important thing in the bag was my $150 down pillow that I had only had for 3 months. I was so pissed off. I made a list of the clothes that were in there and some other items that weren't worth much but had to list them. We did get reimbursed for the back and contents but I never did find another pillow like the one I had. we had bought 2 of the same brand but his was extra firm and mine was extra soft. I went back tot he store and they no longer carried that brand. I so wish I would have carried my pillow on the plane with me.
after that we started doing carry ons and not check any bags.

I don't fly often but, after working in a bag room, I would never check luggage and it's not the stealing that I'm worried about. Any good company takes stealing seriously and I can say, in the 6 years I worked for the airport, I only heard of 1 employee stealing.
The big things are that TSA keeps tubs in their area where they put anything they take out of bags. You may not think your perfume was too big but they did. There is always a ton of this kind of stuff.
By far, the easiest way to have things missing is to add extra crap to the outside of your luggage or use duffle bags. The machinery in the bag rooms is fast moving and if your bag gets stuck in it, it's ripped open or shredded. The sorters take a few seconds to stop moving and by then your stuff is everywhere. We do our best to get it back in the bag but I could easily find clothes and shoes hours later.
Don't automatically assume it's theft. Of course there are immoral people who will steal but everyone down there did pass a federal background check so they're not hiring deadbeats. Everything is fast moving and any one individual is with your luggage for mere seconds most of the time.

You can't or should not use padlocks, unless you are willing to have them cut off and ruined. I use small zip ties , then carry a small pair of nail clippers in my hand luggage, so I can snip off the zip ties. Zip ties are cheap, quick and easy. I figure if I find one of them cut and there is not note / card from security, I would seek assistance from airport personnel. I don't won't to be framed for something. Like I said in an earlier post, I do not in any way think this is foolproof. I use this method as an indicator to know if someone has gained access. I also like to hope it makes it too hard, and the person will just move onto another bag that is faster and easier to access.

I have not had anything stolen but last time I flew home from Vegas my suitcase came onto the conveyor belt half open and with clothes coming out. Inside there was a paper stating the TSA went through it. I was not upset that they went through it but thought at least they cold have closed the bag all the way.

Am I the only one who read this as "What have you stolen out of checked luggage?" I read it like that too and did a double take! I have not had anything stolen to date but about 20 years ago I had a white jacket packed (not on top) and when I got it out at my destination there was a big black grease smudge on it.

Way back in the mid-90s, we had some CDs stolen from a checked bag. It's the only time it's happened.
We ALWAYS check our bags, but I never pack anything in them more valuable than my hair dryer. But since that one experience, we've never used locks. Instead, I tie the zippers together with ribbon. It keeps the bags from coming unzipped but it's also very obvious if they've been opened or tampered with. I also always have a few extra pieces in the bag's outer compartment, just in case I need to open them for some reason before I hand them over. Works like a charm. And the colorful ribbon makes the bags easily identifiable, too.

Nothing stolen. We had the TSA inspection ticket coming back from Vegas and they must have opened all the shampoo, toothpaste, sun lotion, etc. Ours was the big gooey mess suitcase on the belt. What a freaking mess!!!
Once we were horrified when we found out stepdd put her brand new Macbook Pro in her checked bag! It arrived safely and we made her carry it on when she headed home.

Don't automatically assume it's theft. Of course there are immoral people who will steal but everyone down there did pass a federal background check so they're not hiring deadbeats. Everything is fast moving and any one individual is with your luggage for mere seconds most of the time. There are TOO MANY occurrences of theft. A back-ground check? Federal? No, there is just a general criminal check, similar to what many stores run, and if you have not been caught, there is NOTHING on you. Many Apple products have been traced to TSA employee's residences. Others have been arrest for "other" things and when their residences were searched, many reported stolen items were found. Even with the person getting a pay check from a major airline, and wearing that airlines' "uniform," The airlines refuse to have any responsibility over the handling of cargo (any cargo including pets) because they classify the ground support employees as "INDEPENDENT CONTRACTORS" and the airline is not liable for ANYTHING that happens. And frankly I trust them more than TSA. Also, because there are TSA employees that "screen" cargo (like your bags and pets), the airlines will not take responsibility for what NON-employees do. TSA employees for the most part ARE NOT FEDERAL LAW ENFORCEMENT AGENTS. They have not attended the Federal Law Enforcement Training Course. There are a FEW real Federal Agents, but the employees for the most part, have at best a month's worth of training and most of that are on the Federal personnel system and OSHA work standards. In 2001, THIS WAS NOT THE CASE, the initial cadre were mostly retired Law Enforcement Officers and Separated or Retired Military personnel with a background in some forms of security. I knew several people that worked in the same career field as I did on active duty, that worked for a time with TSA. By 2005 most of these people had left the Agency over stupid stuff that was "security theater" not actual security. The people working there now... well, there is a reason why every "attempt" has been stopped by the plane's passengers and crew, and not any Federal Authority.

I had my luggage lost for 24 hours and when I finally got my bag back, my jewelry case was gone. Thankfully it was all cheap Forever 21 and Charming Charlie's jewelry so there was no real monetary value. I was flying LAX to Boston to Madrid to Barcelona so I have no idea at what point it was lost. I didn't file a claim with the airline because months earlier I flew to Kauai and thought my makeup bag was stolen. I did file a claim, and when I got home I saw I left my make up bag on my dresser, oops! So I thought I possibly did the same thing! Nope, it was stolen.

I've never had anything stolen out of my checked bags, but I have had an entire bag stolen. Somewhere between Memphis and Montreal, with a connection at LaGuardia. I ended up arriving in Montreal 2 days before Christmas with and 18 month old baby and no clothes for either of us and no Christmas presents for the family we were visiting. Never did get any of my belongings back. I refuse to fly United airlines or in and out of LaGuardia ever again. That was 24 years ago!
I never put anything of real value in checked bags now. All my electronics and jewelry and medication and cosmetics all go in my purse or carry-on. I almost always travel with expensive camera gear in a photographer's backpack, which has space for my laptop too.
I really think it's disgusting that travelers have to worry about TSA and baggage handlers stealing their belongings, and have no recourse.

Never had anything go missing. But I never put anything of value in checked baggage. All meds, med supplies, electronics go in my big tote and I have a carryon smaller than regulations which has never been gate checked yet. I have seen carryons close to or regulation size get gate checked all the time so I make sure my is smaller to avoid this.

Am I the only one who read this as "What have you stolen out of checked luggage?" No - I had to read the title 3 times! Thankfully I have never had anything stolen, but I have had the TSA notes in my bag when we flew to Scotland. I really never have anything exciting besides clothes anyway. My camera and laptop are always in my carry-on.

I've never had so much as a pair of socks stolen. I don't think it's nearly as common as you think.

So the baggage handlers, down where the conveyor belts move the luggage, are the ones taking stuff? They must waddle home with armloads daily. I wonder how that looks: do they create a pile as they go along, or wear clothing with big ass pockets? Do they collude with one another: "Keep an eye out for perfume for m'lady, guys. I'll watch for jewelry and we can trade!" I think that's a really rude comment and quite an assumption. Your luggage goes through a lot of hands after you check it and before you get it back. Most of those hands are honest individuals.

Nothing stolen but last time I flew I had shampoo, conditioner, lotion etc. in little plastic bottles and all the little bottles in a big ziplock. Some asshole inspected my luggage and opened all the bottles, but didn't close the baby oil AND didn't put the little bottles back in the big ziplok bag. I had baby oil soaking all of my clothes and was up until 2:00 am washing my clothes on the first day of a fourteen day trip.
Sharlag, your fears were founded. Always carry on anything you can't afford to lose

Here's a video of people in the belly of the plane opening and stealing stuff. abc airline theft video and that's not the only info out there about the topic that confirms theft occurs. Do you think I'm insulting ALL the honest baggage handlers, when I talk about the dishonest ones?

I fly 4-6 segments a week and have never had anything stolen. I sometimes bring a used spray starch bottle (with only a little) and some TSA agents remove that.
