It's called TSA Precheck.

TSA will cut those off in a heartbeat, and steal your stuff to boot.
And you're right about the self raising flour from OZ, it IS different. Never have figured out how or why, but it is.

I made the mistake of packing our borrowed video camera on our flight home from our honeymoon in Fiji. Not only did we lose the camera but we lost video tapes (yes back when cameras still used digital tapes) as well as a few rolls of film. I assume they fell out as they stole the camera because they left the empty camera bag and I know the tapes and film were packed around the camera. And then we had to immediately replace the camera because it was borrowed. We only have the roll of film that was in our camera that I'd packed in my purse, and one video tape out of about 6 we had taken on our honeymoon.

We don't check valuables. But I did have my camera stolen which I accidentally forgot under the seat in front of me. I called 45 minutes later (I was on the road) and no one had seen it. It was a nikon d90

I travel a lot - have never had anything taken out of my checked bags. That said, don't put anything in a checked back that you aren't willing to replace. I had a friend put her jewelry in a checked bag and then didn't understand why it was stolen. I felt really bad for her. Same here, I only had the TSA sign once in my bag and I figured it was because I was travelling with a hair dryer whose shape could look like a gun in an x-ray machine I assumed. I was just thinking that until 9/11 I always locked my suitcase, I hated having to leave it unlocked after that. Now I don't even care and don't own a suitcase lock.

I was just telling dh last night that I think I'll leave my dslr at home this time. I don't want to take it in my carry on and definitely don't want it in checked luggage. I'll get by with my purse camera and my phone's camera.

BTW, you can get into a locked bag with a nylon zipper, and no one will ever know. There are some videos on youtube showing how simple it is. Essentially, you push a pen tip through the zipper teeth and then slide the pen around. It separates the zipper, and when you're done, just zip it back up. That's why I don't count on a luggage lock at hotels, either.

Nothing stolen, but the TSA searched DH's bag one time, shortly after 9/11. They left a tag on the outside and a brochure on the inside. They also zip-tied the zipper closed! How are you supposed to get that off when you can't take anything sharp on the plane? We took it to the hotel front desk and they cut it off. I don't think the TSA does that anymore. I had zip-tied my bag last month, and someone took the nail clippers out of the zip pocket on the checked bag! I had to have a room service waiter open it with his pocket knife.

Yes, I agree totally that TSA will cut the zip ties off in heartbeat. Most of the time they remain in-tact though. I don't pack valuables in my checked luggage, so I am not locking to protect from loss per say. I want to know if someone / anyone has gained access to my bags, with good intent or not. There was a case in Australia where a person was convicted for drug trafficing in Bali, they swear they were framed by an airport employee behind the scenes. There is much speculation about this case, but I do not know the truth, nor am I the judge. I wanted a way to hopefully protect my family and I when we travel. I know this is by no means foolproof, but hopefully a deterrent to find an easier bag. I am glad it is not all in my head about the self raising flour! I made some of my old faithful recipes when we first moved to the US, using US self rising flour and they flopped! So now I bring my own and mess with airport security with my kilo's of white powder

Never had anything stolen but I don't check electronics - too much risk of breakage.
You only have to take laptops out of your bag, not all electronics. Kindles, tablets, phones, cameras, etc can all stay in your bag.

I do have a funny though.. I bought my six year old a kids pink cowboy hat in Texas. I carried it on with me because I didn't want it to get squished. I had it in the shopping bag I bought it in. I go through security and my hat is inside the x-ray machine. Then there are several TSA agents looking at it. THEN I get called away to another area. I can't figure out what the heck is going on. Apparently I bought a hat that lights up.. on the hat was a tiara and I never thought to look at it any closer... well yeah, when you looked inside the hat, there were ALL kinds of wires underneath it. I had some explaining to do apparently. The look on my face had to be priceless. They finally had me turn it on to check it out.

I have not had anything stolen but someone has gone through my bags twice. Once on the way to Phoenix and once on the way back. No note from TSA, and the second time my lock was just missing. My stuff was thrown all around in my case so I am sure someone was looking for something to steal. Sorry you piece of crap, nothing here worth stealing!

just clothes and toiletries...I have a soft tote that I use as a carry on, and it carries all my electronics, dslr, and even my gypsy goes in there!
Once I was in 'C' group for Southwest and the stewardess 'tried' to check my carry on - I told her no way, and luckily it did fit under the seat in front of me...even if my feet did not!
However, every time I travel with scrapbook stuff, that bag gets checked by TSA...I get the little note. Guess scrappin' supplies look suspicious.

Was that a young woman who got busted there? I seem to remember a case like that in Bali. Whatever happened to her. She was pretty convincing about being framed for that. I was down there around that time and had ummm, inadvertently packed 3 bottles of wine in my suitcase...and got stopped at customs...all I could think of was that case...oh noooooooooooo. (they let me keep my wine!)

I fly frequently and have never had anything stolen, thank goodness. I keep all electronics and anything that I would be really upset about losing with me in the cabin. I'm not incredibly concerned about theft, but I'd rather keep track of that stuff myself.
A few flights ago, I found one of my thongs wrapped in one of those cards that tell you when your bag has been searched with a smiley face drawn on it. It was folded over my underwear and the the edges were folded over again to create a little envelope. That was definitely a first.

I travel quite often and always check a bag. I have never had anything stolen. I take my IPad and Kindle in my purse and just leave them in there when I go through security.

As a travel professional and having a DH who works for an airline I would NEVER check electronics in a checked bag. They always go in our carry-on that goes under our seat. One time DH forgot that we had the computer in our roll-board bag and he gate checked it--I sweated all the way to our final destination as I was afraid that the bag would get lost on our connecting flight.
If it's something I don't want to loose it always goes with me. It amazes me what people check in their checked baggage.

I travel fairly frequently, about 2-3 times a year. I have had TSA look in my bags a few times, and I knew because of a brochure in the bag. A couple of years ago I was flying Sun Country into Minneapolis, and I had never flown that airline before. I had some costume jewelry in my bag, and it all got taken. I had a Brighton necklace and bracelet taken, as well as two other necklaces. All together, they were worth under $200, but all of them were gifts to me, so that made me sad. I called the airline, and they told me that TSA must have done it, since no one else had access to the bags. I said "well, YOUR baggage handlers had access!" She said "you'll have to call the baggage handlers office." Gave me their phone number, I called a few times and left messages and they never called back. I made a note never to fly THAT airline again!

The only thing I ever had stolen was a box of tampons. They do always manage to turn everything in my suitcase upside down, but nothing else has come up missing.

Yes, the lady's name is Schapelle Corby, she was busted in 2004 and (I had to google it to remember her name) according to wikipedia "Corby was released on parole on 10 February 2014 after serving nine years in prison. Under her parole conditions, Corby will not be able to leave Indonesia until July 2017." Glad they let you keep your wine! Aussie customs officials are very strict. With good reason I might add. I think there may have been another similar case, but I can't recall the details of that one. I am not so naive to think that my bags being "locked" could prevent this, but at least I know if someone has opened them or not.

ive never had anything stolen at DFW airport all electronics have to come out of every carry on and placed in a separate bin so they can go through the scanner. It does slow up the line and I always try and have mine already out... it gets hectic when you are carrying shoes, a laptop, and a bag! I just flew out of DFW in June. I didn't have to take my phone, iPad, or DD's 3DS out of my carry on. I did forget to take off my fitbit and had to get a pat-down. I've never had anything taken out of my checked bag. However, every time I fly out of Lubbock they dig through every inch of my bag and leave the contents in a wadded up mess.

So the baggage handlers, down where the conveyor belts move the luggage, are the ones taking stuff? They must waddle home with armloads daily.
I wonder how that looks: do they create a pile as they go along, or wear clothing with big ass pockets? Do they collude with one another: "Keep an eye out for perfume for m'lady, guys. I'll watch for jewelry and we can trade!"

Another Australian who locks her bag to deter someone from adding, rather than taking anything. That case and the other similar drug trafficking case was a pretty big deal here for quite a long time. Because carry-on is restricted to 7kg on nearly all our flights I nearly always check a bag- but the valuable stuff goes in my hands luggage. I'm willing to risk chargers etc for work laptops in my checked bags, if only because the laptop they give me already weighs 3.5kgs and I still need weight for wallet, phone, food, water, camera etc. I have flown internationally for 3weeks with only 7kgs but didn't take a laptop. Only time I'm aware of my bag being searched is coming back into the country and needing to open it for customs but I was standing there doing the opening. And, touch wood, haven't had anything taken so far!
