First off, let me say that I usually park pretty far away from the door at the store...next to a cart corral, if I can get a spot. So I don't have an issue with walking any distance in the lot.
But I am on crutches temporarily with my leg in a cast, and I am not doing well maneuvering with them. I don't have a lot of upper body strength and it is very difficult for me to get around. Under the circumstances, would it be tacky of my to park in a HP spot without a hang tag? By the time I get my doctor to fill out the paperwork, I'll be only a couple of weeks from getting out of the cast, and I'm not planning on getting out all that much myself. I feel funny about parking there. But thinking about trying to make my way all the way down a row on those crutches is daunting too!
What do the peas think? Acceptable, under the circumstances? Or still wrong? (Leaving aside the possibility of getting ticketed....I'll deal with that if it happens.)

Wouldnt that open you up to a ticket? it is illegal in CA to park in a handicap spot with not tag/plaquard. not sure about where you live.

It's not that it's tacky, it's that it's illegal to park in a handicap spot without a tag or special license plate. You would/should get a ticket or towed if you parked in one without the handicap designation.

If you don't mind cheating, just go online and print one out that looks like a real pass. Most people only do a quick check to see if one is hanging on the mirror and would be fooled by a decently printed counterfeit. I would also apply to get an actual one at the same time though.

I have family member in a wheelchair, paralyzed from a gunshot. Please do not take his parking space. I might have to trip you.

Still wrong. Just look for a closer parking spot.

Sorry, still not right and illegal. Are you using an electric cart once you get into the store? I think I'd just try to shop at smaller stores with close parking during non-busy times since this is a short period of time.

As a former sworn community officer, I'll tell you that not having a hang tag will cause you to get a ticket. Min, $250 fine.
And sorry, any officer would not be fooled by a counterfeit tag. Perhaps we're familiar with that, maybe?

Thanks for replies! I am eligible for a temporary hang tag, it's just almost more of a time consuming process to get it than the amount of time I'm going to be in the cast. (And yes, you can get a ticket for it here, although it rarely happens.)

I think I'm going to have to, although I really don't want to do that either....I'm afraid I'll run over somebody or not be able to handle that properly either. This is my first experience with crutches and I am trying to get used to them, but I'm not doing very well.

Those are some expensive tickets. My son, decided it was OK to park in one because he was just going in "for a minute". WRONG! $400 ticket. AND he got read the riot act by me. He now preaches about the evils of parking in one without the proper tags and need to park there.
I am actually kind of shocked about the printing of the fakes. I have never seen that before. Although I guess there is fraud everywhere. It just hurts to know that people would take advantage of a space that is needed for the handicapped. I hope if someone is caught with one of those that the fine would be doubled or tripled.

Getting a ticket or getting your car damaged by someone who sees that you don't have a legal right to park there isn't worth it. You would be entitled to a temporary handicapped parking permit from your doctor. The paperwork to get a placard can be downloaded (at least in California) and you just mark what you need and have someone run it by your doctor's office for you. I did that when I finally admitted I needed it. I drove it to his office and the nurse ran it back in to the doctor to sign. It took all of 10 minutes.
If you have someone willing to run the form in for you, get it signed, and you can then immediately get your placard. I used Auto Club because I'm a member there, but you might need to go to the DMV. Even after your cast is removed, you will probably have some trouble or pain walking. Your doctor will just circle the months that it starts and ends, giving you the use of the placard for as long as you need it.
I would say spend the hour or so to get the legal placard and don't even think about parking illegally. It is tacky, rude, and illegal.

As someone that's been in your position and didn't handle crutches very well, I completely understand where you are coming from. However, I'd advise using this as an opportunity to have someone do your shopping for you, rather than breaking the law. Win, win to me!

I asked about that...they gave me a brochure. :-( There must be an easier way to navigate them...I've seen kids at school fly up and down the halls, but I am apparently not getting it. But I'll keep trying.

I hope you didn't think I was suggesting that you would! I'm sorry! I just thought you were trying to explore the best option for you. I was just expressing my surprise that there are sites where you can print the fake ones.
I do hope that you are better soon and back to normal functioning.

You say you do not want to use an electric cart. How are you going to get around the store and push a regular cart.
Do not take a handicapped spot without a tag. That is beyond tacky.
Would you drive without a license even if you only have to drive a little way.

No, I didn't think that. :-) I was actually surprised about that too...I didn't know either. Thank you....hopefully I will be rid of this soon!

For those who are unscrupulous enough, there are always ways to make it reality, you don't actually need a site to print one. BTW, it's a $500 fine locally, if it were me, I'd have someone else drive and drop me off in front while they parked properly.

But you seriously would trip someone in a leg cast on crutches?? Heck I would do more than trip you. Id go off on you. My son has a handicap parking tag. I only use it when HE is with me. Its not like I go oh yayay we get a close parking spot. Sure it helps him, but Id rather him be a typical healthy boy. Those sports aren't there for your convience. They are there for people who truly need them. Don't want to hobble on crutches? Then go to the damn DMV (or AAA office if a member) amd get one. You don't want to deal with the hassel of having to get one? But its ok to take someones spot? Seriously? So you can inconvience them? Yea this is one of those it pisses me off things in life. Oh and btw my daughter was in a leg cast and on crutches and I still didn't use my ds card amd she was able to get around just fine!

I wouldn't do it without the hang tag, mostly because it sets a bad example. Get someone to drive you wherever it is you must go, and have them drop you off at the door. It's irritating and inconvenient to have to wait for a ride, but to me, better than parking in the HP spot without a tag.
I've been in an aircast since March, except for the 4 wks I was in a hard cast after surgery, and have had to rely way too much on others to drive me. I do have a hangtag, but if I can find a close enough parking spot, I won't use it (and sometimes the HP spaces are further away, anyways!)

It really doesn't take any time at all. I downloaded the form needed (for my husband), it took 10 min to have the dr sign it, then went by the DMV. Easy easy. And legal.

I saw a new fangled appartus a year or so ago. A gal in my building at work was using it. Instead of crutches, it was kind of like a scooter. Her "bad" leg that was in a cast (below the kneee - you have to be able to bend your knee) anyway, her bad leg was bent at the knee and rested on a Scooter, and her good leg did the pushing. Looked way easier than cruthces. Not sure if insurance covers it or not. She "scooted" faster than I walk!

But you seriously would trip someone in a leg cast on crutches?? Would you really steal a parking spot from a legitimately disabled person? It works both ways.
And, no, I would not actually trip you but I would take you to task in public and call the police. I take that very seriously. My grandmother was in a wheelchair prior to ADA laws and parking permits. As a small girl, I watched my grandfather carry her places because there wasn't a provision for her.
