Oh, but if you do get the placard, be sure to remember to use it.
I've seen both my dad and my MIL forget theirs in the past. We were at a tourist attraction with my dad, and the attendant pointed out that he hadn't used it, but my MIL just lucked out that no one saw her vehicle sitting there without it.

I guess I should've brought up the subject to the doctor while I was there, but I really didn't think it would be that hard to use the crutches (I know....incredibly stupid on my part to make that assumption).
But I would rather have one of those rolling things and park anywhere and not have to use the riding shopping cart than get a tag and be able to park at the door and still have to get in and out on the crutches!

When I broke my leg, the hospital put me in a regular walker instead of crutches. Very easy to get around on, no fear of falling. I had already amply demonstrated my lack of coordination. You can also get an optional basket, which really helps when you are at home and need/want to carry water or food or whatever from room-to-room. I put colored streamers on mine to make it look a bit less like an old person item and a bit more cheerful. Just to let you know, you should check with your state about the tag. Here in CO, you can mail it in, but you can also take the doctor form to the DMV in person, walk in and up to the Info desk and they will issue it on the spot. Virtually no waiting in line. Hope you heal quickly! Thanks! I am completely uncoordinated even with two working legs!

Thanks! I am completely uncoordinated even with two working legs! I'm sorry, but I have claim to the Queen of Klutz title all sewn up. Years before I broke my leg, many people wondered how I had managed to get through life without breaking anything. My Dad used to say I could trip on a piece of lint!

If you don't mind cheating, just go online and print one out that looks like a real pass.

I couldn't do that. Even though I can qualify for a "real" handicap tag based on the RA/PA, I still don't get one. It is a matter of pride with me that I can and will make the distance no matter what and no matter the pain. As suggested by one of the other posters, as the doc to have a therapist show you how to effectively use your crutches.

Take the time to get the permit - it is illegal to park in a HC spot without one.

I wouldn't risk it.
Either drive around and look for a close up spot that isn't handicapped.
Flag down a cart boy to bring one of those electric carts to your car
Wait for someone to drive you that can drop you off at the door.
Hope you feel better soon!

It is just plain wrong but I understand your problem. Have you considered having whatever you need delivered -- assuming there is such a thing available in your area? Where I live I could have Peapod deliver groceries and just about everything else I could have delivered via Amazon. I know there are other grocery stores that will deliver for a fee. The fine is quite expensive here and rather than pay that, I would rather pay for delivery of stuff I truly need or pay a person to run the errands for me.

While you may have a genuine need, you do not have the placard so parking in a hc spot is ILLEGAL!!! Ftr I would call the police if I saw you. I don't care if you normally park in the back 40 and cha cha to the door, without the placard you CAN NOT park there. And yes I'm passionate about this as I have 3 loved ones who depend/depended on hc spots.

After our car accident, I was on crutches/ in a boot for a while. My friend took me shopping, and she would drop me off at the front doors and find a place to park. When we were done, she would swing around to the front doors to get me. You just need to find a good friend to drive you around. Learn to use the scooters in the stores. They are life savers. No, I would not park in a handicapped spot without a hang tag.

I agree with two things posted:
The knee scooter isn't always covered by insurance, especially if they've already paid for crutches.
My mother broke her leg in several places one winter of recent(we live in Virginia). She was able to get an temp. hang tag within the week. Her doctor authorized it--we took it to the DMV, filled out the application, and within a week, had the temporary hangtag. It CAN be done in person, so to the person who said it can't, the DMV has been lying to you. And it doesn't have to be done in Richmond.
(and in fact, I just checked the Virginia DMV website, and they said it'll take 15 days for the hang tag--we probably had hers in less than 10.)

When I was on crutches my sister drove me everywhere and dropped me off but it was my right knee that was injured so I couldn't drive if I wanted to.
Honestly if I saw someone with a cast and on crutches with no placard I wouldn't call the police even though it is illegal I would understand they need the spot but that's just my opinion. I have handicap people in my family and I think they would understand also. Of course if you got a ticket you can't complain.
Now the guys from across the street that park in my family friends handicap spot because they have no where else to park really piss me off.

Before purchasing the scooter I would call around to some pharmacies or medical device places to see if anyone rents them.

Yes it would hurt. It would hurt the people who have the correct hang tag and it would hurt you when you get a ticket for it. all you have to do is call your doctor tell him you would like to get a temp hang tag and have him write you a perscription for one. go to the dmv and get the hang tag. then you will be doing the correct thing.

It might technically be illegal, but if I saw you going to/from you car in your current condition, I wouldn't scowl at you and shake my head like I normally do when I see non-qualified people using the handicapped spots.

Want me to ask my 24 year old Army godson who lost his leg in Afghanistan 6 months ago and is on crutches now because he is having problems with his stump healing, if it is OK with him for you to take his handicapped parking place because you are "entitled" to it even though you don't want to go through the hassle to do what is necessary to obtain a permit? I am pretty sure what he has gone through is a bit more of a hassle than it would take for you to legally obtain a temporary permit, but then I am also sure he would also say it was fine with him because he is a sweet & considerate person and wouldn't want to inconvenience someone who is disabled.
I'm really sorry you are experiencing this, but to me, if you don't have a legal permit for it, taking it anyhow is "stealing" from someone who does. I do hope your healing is fast & you have a full recovery.

That would be a good way to get your car keyed, or an expensive ticket. If I saw you with crutches, I wouldn't call the police. If my disabled Veteran husband couldn't get a handicapped spot and I saw your empty vehicle there with no tag, I likely would call the police. You have a legitimate reason to get a placard but can't be bothered to obtain it, so it must not be important enough for you to park in one of those spots. Just go get the placard.

I feel for anyone who ever forgets to hang their placard up before leaving their car. People vandalizing or harming vehicles over a missing placard? How does one know if they are "getting back" at someone who is abusing the spot or adding more grief to the life of someone who already has enough on their plate? I had no idea people did things like that.

No, please don't do it, bad karma. It is not just the social injustice but about a $500 fine here if you illegally (no tag) park in a handicapped spot. Plus, at least in this area the tag has a registration number that must match the car registration and they do check.
What has led to this was the abuse of the system. People would "share" the placards. I always loved to see the jacked up pick-up trucks with giant wheels which you need a step ladder to get in or out parked in the handicapped spots.
I was in a cast for 4 months and never ever even considered applying for a tag and taking a spot from a person who really needs one. It was temporary for me and at over 50 I was awful with the crutches too. I was just careful and gave myself time. The worst was getting in and out of work, had to park in a garage across from the building. Had to give myself an extra 20 minutes to get from my car to the office. But again it was temporary.
Hope you heal well.

I went across the street on my crutches tonight and didn't think I was going to make it back, so I'm going to wait for the scooter before taking any "trips." :-)

It's illegal, so don't.
Call your doc's office, tell them you are having a lot of trouble on the crutches, and see if they can get a temp placard issued for you.
My mom had ankle surgery and the issuance of the placard was actually quick and easy.

I don`t understand some of the posters implying the the OP isn`t a legitimately disabled person. She IS. She qualifies - or she would around here - for the placard. But given how much pain she`s in and how hard it is to get around, it`s difficult to get the process done to get the placard.
OP, I`m in a wheelchair and I`d have no issue with you using one of the spots. You need it. I would see if you can get the proper documentation, and in the meantime, just use the spots. Here, at least, if you did get ticketed, once they saw you and realized your medical situation, they`d waive the fine, as, imo, they should. You aren`t at fault here - your doctor is, for not being on the ball and arranging this for you as soon as this injury happened. I`m guessing you broke your leg or something along those lines? If it was a scenario like a surgery that was required to fix something (i.e. a knee replacement) that`s even worse. Total negligence on the part of the medical staff in not ensuring you had a placard before you were discharged.

First off, let me say that I usually park pretty far away from the door at the store...next to a cart corral, if I can get a spot. So I don't have an issue with walking any distance in the lot. But I am on crutches temporarily with my leg in a cast, and I am not doing well maneuvering with them. I don't have a lot of upper body strength and it is very difficult for me to get around. Under the circumstances, would it be tacky of my to park in a HP spot without a hang tag? By the time I get my doctor to fill out the paperwork, I'll be only a couple of weeks from getting out of the cast, and I'm not planning on getting out all that much myself. I feel funny about parking there. But thinking about trying to make my way all the way down a row on those crutches is daunting too! What do the peas think? Acceptable, under the circumstances? Or still wrong? (Leaving aside the possibility of getting ticketed....I'll deal with that if it happens.) Still wrong and you could get a ticket....morally just wrong. You might be able to get a temporary one quicker than you think.

There are moral reasons not to do it. And why would you be so casual about getting a hefty ticket?

If your doctor is slow about completing forms, check with the DMV about options - in Kentucky you don't have to have your application signed by a doctor if your disability is obvious and can be confirmed by the clerk issuing the permit. My doctor is two hours away in another state, so just dropping off the paperwork isn't an easy option, but since my disability is fairly obvious, I've never had a problem renewing my permit and plates just by going to the clerk's office.
Also, Walmart.com has delivery on many of their non-perishable items - I order bulky stuff like cat litter, cat food and toilet paper that way, so when I physically go to the grocery I don't have to juggle so many items. I usually get my order by Fed Ex delivery in 2 days. It's not as nice as true grocery delivery would be, but it still helps.
