Last year we had lice. All 4 of us. I went balls to walls getting it out of our hair and house. Lice lady came, we combed 2x per day for 2 weeks, 1x daily for one more week and every other day for 2 more weeks. Plus, the chemicals and literally every internet suggestion. Obviously- a bit over board. So now, my head is itching. DH combed me and didn't find anything. I question his lice combing talent and commitment. DD age 9 combed, told me I have lots of flakes but no nits and no louse. But it feels just like lice! Going crazy! It is really one spot right off my crown and the nape of my neck. DH says it is flaky and said it looked really dry. I wash every other day and use T-Gel every other wash. I use Deva Curl the other. I have been having lots of cystic acne on my neck and some weird allergic reactions on neck and face. This isn't odd for me as I randomly break out in hives to products I've used before. I've never really been diagnosed with anything. DH is certain I'm losing my mind. So if your head is itchy and the lice check is clear, or at least to the unprofessional eye, what should I do next? Is this dr. Worthy or could my hairdresser give me tips?

If you're just a little flakey and itchy it could just be dandruff!

dry flaky scalp will itch and feel like lice. Talk to your dermatologist about your scalp. You may need to be using the tgel at every wash or less frequently.

I had lice as an adult and then had subsequent phantom new outbreaks every summer. (I'm around lousy kids every summer.) Finally convinced myself it was always all in my head.
Until it wasn't. Second case was 15 years later. Ugh.
My husband is the worst at lice checks. Doctors aren't much better. Unbelievably, I've seen school nurses do it poorly.
I would pay for a check from the lice lady - hopefully, just to ease your mind. Good luck.
ETA: Just noticed the "Lice PTSD" part of your title. SO TRUE!!

I have a recommendation. Buy the Liceguard Robi Comb. You can get it at Walgreen's or anywhere like that. You can methodically comb your own hair. Because when those freakouts happen, I understand how no one else properly grasps the need to do it right!

. ETA: Just noticed the "Lice PTSD" part of your title. SO TRUE!! My friend told me that after her family had it 3 times in a year that she didn't think she would ever get over it. Went full on hyper vigilant, isolation, extreme reaction to the meer memory. I didn't understand... And then, I understood it loud and clear!!!

The mere mention of lice triggers rather extreme behaviour (DD then 7, and I had it several times two years ago. I developed an (probably unhealthy) obsession with other kids' scalps ). It's one of those things where you can't really truly understand it until you BTDT.

Sounds more like a little bit of atopic eczema or something like that. I don't think it'd be in just one or two areas if it was lice.

I swear I jumped every time my scalp itched after we got through our outbreak. Drove my husband crazy.
My friend who is adopting two little girls with long, long hair puts drops of tee tree oil in the shampoo and swears by that method of prevention.
Has worked so far.

I totally get you. My dd had it in Sept. I swore I had it but we didn't find anything. I can't remember if it was during that time or a few weeks later when she had it again that I found it in my head. Dh refused to do a check, dd was could only do so well, my mom came but didn't see anything. I finally got the Robi comb for myself.

Because when those freakouts happen, I understand how no one else properly grasps the need to do it right! I have it. I have done my own head at least once a month since having it! Forgot about that little overboard ritual! It never goes "off" so I don't know if it works. By the time we got it during the outbreak we were pretty clear. I'm just not sure it works. I does seem to show me a lot of build up, but never a nit. But yes, I'm doing that too and nothing. I think I'm going to try the Dr. route. Typing that all out really helps me confirm that I don't have lice. I'll look into the excema. I read something online about using vinegar to remove build up (and of course that lice treatment method) so maybe I'll do that tonight. Google isn't really being helpful...

I know how you feel. My head was itching me like crazy - I had EVERYONE look at it - family members, school nurse, and hair stylist. This happened right after we lost my son so I attributed it to my nerves. After 2 months of itching I went to the dermatologist and he diagnosed LICE! OMG - I was so upset that I suffered that long needlessly.
Need to take a xanax now - PTSD is right!

My husband is the same way! When our daughter got lice in 3rd, then in 4th (almost to the day one year later), he was convinced he had it. Even though he did none of the combing and stayed in our room the entire time. He is always asking me to check his head even 3 yrs. later. He doesn't think I am a good lice checker and is convinced he has lice.
I still never use anyone in the family's brush, still paranoid!

She kept itching her head so I looked, my husband looked, my mom looked and our hair stylist looked. None of us saw anything. She had very blonde hair and we couldn't really see the nits or any lice (or we didn't know what to look at/for). I used Dermarest shampoo on her thinking that would stop the itching. When I rinsed her hair and combed it these little things came out of her hair. Ugh - they were lice. The Dermarest had just paralyzed the little buggers (but not killed them). We took care of the problem with a prescription from the doctor. I had them too. Yuck. PTSD is still with me.

It has been 2 years since my younger dd had lice, and spread them to me (though I only had a few eggs and a few live bugs, very mild fortunately). I'm glad to know it's not just me that still itches frequently and worries about lice. Once in awhile I pull out the lice comb and run it through and I find nothing. My daughter won't let me near her with the comb -- she tells me that she will be sure to tell me if she's itching (though she didn't the last time...).
Yes, there is lice PTSD. For sure.

Oh I understand that feeling. I've had it several times throughout my life when my head gets itchy. My poor husband has had to comb through my hair on more than one occasion and has duly pronounced, "Nope. Nothing there." (Are you sure???)

We've never had lice (one perk of having only boys maybe) but now MY head is itchy.
Sorry about your PTSD OP! I hope the doctor gives you some peace of mind!

T-gel is really harsh. I would check to see if it us causing ALL of those problems. Even the "acne" rash can be a side effect of T-gel. I think I remember reading something that said not to use it on children and infants because it has a risk of causing cancer in little ones.

It's probably eczema or something; two of my kids get patches on their scalps.
Around here, the lice salons charge $10 for a check (or, at least, did when I last had to deal with one four years ago or so), which might be a price worth paying for peace of mind.

Interestingly enough, I just bought a new bottle and went for the super extra strength! Haven't used that one yet though.

If the flaking isn't too far up into your hair such that'd you'd make a mess, rub a little bit of hydrocortisone on it to try to calm it down. I have dermatitis on my scalp and when it gets really itchy and flaky, I have a liquid steroid for it. I'm assuming you don't have one of those, but regular hydrocortisone is an OTC steroid.

My head itches in the winter just from being dry.
This winter hasn't been so bad as it has not been as cold and dry.

Hence the reason I am scratching like a crazy woman just reading this thread!! I was typing with one hand and scratching with the other ..... We've had several bouts of lice in our house, the slightest tingle in my scalp makes me scratch like a dog and reach for the Licemeister comb. PTSD is a good description. On the bright side, if your kids don't have it you probably don't have it. Now back to scratching.
