I am hosting a crop next week. The first one I have hosted since I moved here 5 years ago! It is freezing here this weekend and I had the idea of serving chili (because it is chilly outside!) I do make a very good chili (if I do say so myself. ) I would serve it with tortilla chips, shredded cheese, and sour cream. Does that sound like something you would like at a crop? Any other ideas for add-ins? Any suggestions appreciated. Julie

Is there a separate eating area or will people be eating at the crop tables?
When I think of chili the first thing I think is messy. Very messy.

The crop I go to has chili quite frequently. Easy to keep warm in the crockpot, and there are all kinds of add-ins, with cheese, sour cream, crackers, etc.

I love chili, and as long as it is separate from the crop-before or after-it sounds good.

Sounds good - I actually find chili less messy than sandwiches, because sandwich stuff gets all over your fingers, tomatoes drop out unexpectedly, etc.

I think chili sounds great, as do soups and other crockpot-type things you can fix and forget. I would have something else (simple, like cheese and crackers) available in case someone doesn't eat meat or tomatoes or spicy stuff or something.

Yes, there will be a separate eating area.
Thanks for the positive feedback...chili it is!

I don't think chili is messy. I also think adults know to sit back if they are next to their creations. I go to crops that serve breakfast, lunch, and dinner. You just have to be aware of clearing a space or sitting in another area if possible. Pizza is greasy, sandwiches are messy, etc.

Chili sounds perfect for a crop. And it's nice and warm, which would be nice in Massachusetts right now.

I hate chili with a deep fiery passion that inflames my soul. I would be very disappointed if that were the only food served. For groups, I prefer to make things that are flexible- sandwich fixings, taco fixings, or I would have two different, simple main items.

I'm another one that hates chili. I would have to go find something else to eat. Is there a way you can let people know the menu so if needed they can bring their own food?

I like chili and wouldn't mind eating it. (give me some homemade cornbread to go with it and I'm in heaven!)
That said, I know plenty of people who don't like or can't eat spicy food. As the PP's mentioned can you let people know what the food is ahead of time so they can plan. When I've gone to crops it's usually lasagna, salad and bread. I'm lactose intolerant and ricotta and mozzarella mess me up big time, so I usually bring my own food (PB&J and chips) that doesn't have to be refrigerated.

Since some of the toppings would overlap I would maybe add a baked potato bar. We had one at a crop and it was a big hit. The chili also works as a potato topping. I know done like saltines on their chili and I like green onions.
ETA at crops we always had a potluck. The host would choose a theme or tell us what she was serving and people would bring something to go with it or something they liked to share. It was a lot of fun.

As long as there is a separate eating area, then I think chili would be fine. But as others suggested, you might want an alternate food - maybe baked potatoes? Then people could eat them plain, or chili plain, or a conbo.

Chili is actually also really yummy when served over spaghetti pasta. With a dollop of sour cream on top? Heck yes!!!

I hate chili...but I know a lot of people love it. I would add something else to give a little variation or to give those non-chili lovers another option.

Honestly, if it had beans in it I wouldn't eat it, but I would also be very polite about it and not say anything. I hate being made fussed over because I am a picky eater. I would have just picked at other stuff, crackers, or whatever, but I would have been fine.

I like the idea of baked potatoes as well. They are super easy to make for a crowd and stay warm in a cooler for hours. I have issues with cumin, so I wouldn't eat the chili. But it does sound good!

For the Semi-annual crop I go to she has pizza and salad the first night and we're on our own the second. Some people go to downtown Sutter Creek to eat but a while back someone started organizing a pot luck for those of us who don't want to leave the hotel. We had a baked potato bar one time and it was awesome. And someone brought chili to use with the baked potatoes.

If you go with chilli I would not make it spicy but have jalepenos to add in for those who don't like chill.
I would probably do a soup also for vegetarians and those who don't like chill.

I usually make chili and cornbread for the crops that I go to and someone else makes a salad and someone else will make the desert. It turns out to be a great meal.

I think chili sounds perfect, and adding baked potatoes is a great idea, as well. Even better is the idea of an actual crop! There hasn't been one in my area in years, and we are in an area that used to have three local scrapbook stores. I would LOVE to attend a crop. Do you mind if I ask how you got the ball rolling on you area, or have there been regular crops in your neck of the woods lately?

I've served mild chili at crops in the past and it went over well. I also agree that it's not messy to eat, if anything it might be messy in the area where it's being served but that's it. I like the idea of a baked potato bar too. The thing is, there will always be someone who isn't going to like what you're offering no matter what you do. Do what you can do and don't worry about the rest.

I would do a couple of options. I like chili, but can't do spicy. So your awesome recipe might not work for others. Maybe you could also do a potato soup where they could add bacon, cheese, chives, etc...
ETA: Should have read the whole thread! Potato bar is a good idea too!

As long as there is cheese and bread to soak up juices, I'm all for chili. Chili alone makes me sad. Cheese makes everything better.
Also, don't make it spicy. For those who might like a kick, have red pepper flakes for them to shake on.

I only like white bean and chicken chili. If i were at a crop that just had regular chili, I'd be seriously hoping for something else to fill up on. A potato bar would do it for me! If I were paying for the crop and chili was my only food option, I would not be a happy camper. I wouldn't complain, but i wouldn't pay to come back, since i couldn't get my money's worth.
