Better to pay $150 to learn this woman is an ass rather than waste years trying to develop a real friendship with her. Consider that money as an educational expense. And I truly hope you did not give her the pieces of the tray.
You're an incredibly creative and artistic woman. You should do something amazing with the pieces of the tray yourself. Then post a picture of it on your facebook and let that eat at her. And if you want to be a real bitch about it, say that you just sold it for $500 and you're thrilled!

UPDATE: I keep forgetting to update this thread. "Friend" found out from the artist that the platter was $150. I just sent her a check and moved on. I didn't unfriend her on fb because that's DRAMA but I did just unfollow her and set her as an acquaintance so we'll have much less interaction. I preferred to pay the artist directly but I got some story about how he was a teacher and didn't work on art until summertime and had none in stock. She did say "oh darn, I really liked that platter" but later said how ironic it was that all the gifts from her former husband had broken or whatever so it was probably just good it was gone. But she sure cashed that check.
I did what I said I'd do, but if the roles were reversed, I wouldn't have made a good friend (which is what I thought I was at one point) pay for something that was an accident. I know exactly where I stand now. She would no longer be my friend. You have taken the high road, and are a damn classy lady.

You can feel good about doing the right thing! I'm with you, I would have never had someone pay for something broken by accident. Did you end up giving her the broken platter? She seems like a piece of work and you're well rid of her. I'd have done the exact same as you and figure it was worth the $150 to be rid of her.
My husband got the worst of it out of the dumpster before I could tell him not to bother so yes, I did give it back to her. I still wonder if she just was "testing" to see if it was really broken.
This thread baffles me a little. I was right up there to say "no way would I get it out of the trash". Even though it was handmade or painted. Even though it was 150 dollars. But then I got to thinking of that thread about the "bitch" step mother who tossed out graduation balloons you can buy at any party supply store and other display items. 90% of the poster there were ready to tar and feather the step mom. Yet here it seemed OK to toss the broken but expensive artist made platter without checking with the owner first. Me personally, I would of probably tossed it too, I am just surprised at the peas.

I would never forget something that valuable at a party. And if I did I would go right over & pick it up within a few days.
