I don't like Amazon filling up with reviews from people who were paid to review the products. It's too easy to write them with a bias and I'm glad they are taking steps to curb the practice. I don't really care if a given paid reviewer sometimes writes bad reviews; what I want to see are reviews from people who've actually bought and tried the product. I have written some reviews myself but mostly I leave feedback when Amazon asks me if I can answer a question about something I've already bought. The answered questions from verified buyers are sometimes more helpful than the reviews. They are a lot more reliable, in my opinion. I agree, I find myself looking at questions more than the reviews lately. And yes, I'm another on too lazy to review. I also think there can be a difference in reviewing a product you paid for and either received free or for a discounted amount. Do the compensated reviewers review with the thought of 'is this worth the full price and would I have paid full price for this item'.

I guess I can sort of see Amazon's reasoning. I am pretty sure sellers are not suppose to pay buyers for a review and in a sense, by offering the discount, the seller was paying for a review. I can understand why you would want the discount and wouldn't mind writing an honest review in return but I do think that goes against their policy - I see it more as the seller's problem, not yours but since you were tied to it, I guess that is why they included you as well.

Not only their policy, but there are actual FTC rules about disclosing both free and discounted items. Amazon may be cleaning house to protect themselves, even if people disclose. It probably has more to do with the sellers' practices than the reviewers, which would be why some people who disclose could get caught up in the removals.

It's very hypocritical of amazon, IMO. I see so many idiotic and unhelpful reviews. You'd think they would target those instead of people who have actually used the product and are leaving a thoughtful and honest review. It's frustrating because I often use reviews to help me decide on products.

as far as reviews left for discounted items, I see a LOT of reviews from Vine members and I don't remember seeing very many negative ones at all. Maybe it means nothing but I completely disregard vine reviews anymore. I wish there was a way to filter them out.

It has to do with if you get a discount on something in exchange for an honest review. Sellers need reviews. If they gave me a discount I feel like I owe them a review because that was part of the deal. And I gave honest reviews, not all got good reviews. Some did, some didn't. The thing is, when I got wind that there might be a problem I tried to get right on it to fix it, if there was something wrong. They never ever responded with any information at all until now. And that email isn't really information, more like a big F U. Way to suck Amazon when I was trying to do things right. I don't even know what manipulating customer reviews means. I gave honest feedback. What more are they asking for? The very fact that you are fighting this so hard is proof to me that you are not "trying to do things right". You are clearly receiving too many/too much in benefits and or benefits you are not supposed to be receiving. Otherwise you would not spend days and days fighting with Amazon about reviews. Receiving discounts to post a review. Days and days arguing whether you can leave reviews. So basically, you're pissed you won't get discounts I never heard of to begin with. Totally not feeling sympathetic here.

It's frustrating because I often use reviews to help me decide on products. The problem is that so much of Amazon is run by bots. Only some stuff is handled by humans and much of that is actually canned. Some of their customer service is in an Indian call center where they just copy/paste. I get that it's frustrating the problem is that Amazon's search algorithm takes reviews into account, the more reviews a product has the higher it will rank in search, the higher it ranks in search the more sales it gets. Therefore it behooves the seller, especially sellers of new products, to pay (via discounts) for reviews. Clearly I've spent too much time on the Amazon seller boards

I hate when someone leaves a one star review because they didn't like the color or the mailman left the package in the wrong spot! What has that got to do with how the product works?!

I think that offering a discount for a review is slimey.
