So as some of you know, Studio Calico offered a free kit of the planner or stationary kits, you just pay $5 shipping. I chose the planner and used the code to check out. There was no shipping charge, which made surprising sense since I already have a documenter kit and I added it during the bundling period. So, yay! Free stuff! And then... I got this email. Can anyone help decipher this? ----------------------------- Hello, We're so glad that you are trying the Planner Kits with the FREESCKIT promo! We wanted to reach out to you and let you know that the $5.00 shipping charge will be added to your bundled orders that will be charged on March 6. If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out to Customer Service any time by starting a conversation. Thank you for your business and have a great day, Studio Calico Customer Service ----------------------------- Am I going to be charged shipping? Or is this just a mass email that goes to everyone? I will start a conversation if I have to but thought I could get a faster response here

Yes. That's why it makes no sense to have multiple kits there. It doesn't cost $10 shipping to send that Planner kit and your Documenter kit.

Yeah, when I read through the SC thread it seemed like it wasn't working right at first and people were not charged the $5 so they fixed it retroactively to people who already checked out.
Lucky you aren't international because apparently those people have to pay the $3 handling fee, too. This was not mentioned until people complained/asked on the message board.
So glad I didn't like those kits! They'll probably send you the wrong one!!

Oh man. I'm not sure I want to pay $5 for it! Even if that's just "shipping"! It seems... dishonest.... to charge someone extra after they've checked out and agreed to pay a lower amount. DANGIT!

I think the $5 shipping is what the kits are probably worth to SC and they are trying to unload them quickly. So if they still charge you $5 they don't actually lose money on the kits and still bundle your order with no shipping cost to them. Surprise!

Ugh sad to say it's absolutely typical. Glad I didn't order one because I would've ended up paying $8.

I just read that mail too! On top of all that has been mentioned above I'm not surprised that they came with it 2 days after the first orders rolled in and just before they left for the weekend - so typical....

I didn't see it coming- HAHAHAAAAAAAAAAAAA Don't feel stupid! I actually thought the same thing although I had multiple conversations going this year because of the sh... they do over there. All of those have been with untrained/careless cs reps. Don't get me wrong they only do their jobs and don't know it any better unless someone tells them how it is done correctly, but this is just not happening....

They told us the price would be $5 domestic AND international. That was VERY clear in the original message. Then all of a sudden, when people are pressing them for information, it's $8 for internationals. Not cool. $3 is actually a 60% price increase that came after the fact, unannounced! I'm not the one one to whine and complain over SC, as it is my choice to shop with them, so I have to take the consequences, but this was an unusual low mark. Disappointing.

I was nearly, so nearly, tempted by this one. I thought for $5 I couldn't go wrong. I decided against it because there must be a catch for internationals, right? Sorry you got stung.

Does anyone know a legit reason for the $3 handling fee for internationals anyway? Is the shipping charge not enough on its own or is addressing an international package worth an extra charge PER KIT?

Update: --------------------- Hello, We are so sorry for any confusion! The e-mail that was sent out about the free stationery kit does mention a $5 shipping fee and I have included a screenshot of that portion of the e-mail for your convenience. However, if you wish to cancel this order, please let me know and I would be happy to do that for you. I look forward to hearing from you, Seane ---------------------
Of course. Screenshot me the coupon details! I will screenshot you the checkout page that says $0 will be charged to my card! But, dang it, I didn't think to do that! Lesson learned. I cancelled the sub and will cancel the rest when I get my March kit. In fact, maybe I should just cancel it now.

To be fair, they did state clearly that it was a free kit, just $5 to ship, even with your bundled order.

To be fair, they did state clearly that it was a free kit, just $5 to ship, even with your bundled order. It's not the $5. The initial message clearly stated that the trial kit would only cost $5, domestic AND international, as a shipping cost. No confusion there. Then they forgot to mention that internationals would have an additional $3 fee. And, although that is a 60% increase, I really don't get very upset over $3. The main disappointment is that there is always something they forget to communicate because it seems as if they act from an impulse and don't really think things through before they post. So if you act fast on their offers, you're likely to find the rules of the offer changed after you've already purchased. And that's not good.

That is true @juliehenry4! So I was expecting the charge to come up when I checked out but it didn't! So when I "authorized" my purchase, I didn't authorize $5, I authorized $0! In the end, thy were right in the first place but to not charge someone and then retroactively charge them is really shady!

You could always dispute the charge and let SC fight it out with your cc company over it...

I didn't take advantage of the offer, but I just went and read the email. It doesn't mention the $3 for international.

You could always dispute the charge and let SC fight it out with your cc company over it... I'd take this route too. A merchant can't go back and increase the charge above what was authorized upon checkout. That's seriously dishonest and possibly illegal. I know that they don't add shipping until they process all subs, so I'm guessing this is their way of finding a loophole. If your initial invoice doesn't have a shipping charge, it's your word against there's over how much to charge. And given their lightning fast abilities to delete and edit posts, they always seem to get away with it.

I just feel really sorry for the folks that pay full price for those kits. I was reading the planner kit usually includes a stamp and they dropped it this month maybe cos of this special.

Yet again, SC's 'stellar' CS misses a chance to not make them look like a douche bag company.
Just I was thinking that SC might not have to wear the 'douche bag' crown this year, they come back and revive their lack luster CS.

I was reading the planner kit usually includes a stamp and they dropped it this month maybe cos of this special. @northrigg I hadn't considered that this might have been a pre-planned special - I assumed that sales at reveal were so dismal that they decided to offload the remaining kits as quickly as possible, possibly because they wanted to show more impressive sales figures to yet another new partner... If it was planned, then, that is an interesting strategy... Maybe they are hoping those kits in person will be enough to win someone over to committing to a longer subscription.... I admittedly pounced on it as a five dollar embellishment add-on, but I have no intention of keeping that subscription longer term. Partially because I do not plan well.

Shopping at Studio Calico is like eating some of those Harry Potter "every flavor" beans: sometimes you get the lovely strawberry flavor, but most times it's ear wax flavored.

The SC thread is locked. April says (deep inside replies on the first page), "We will honor the $5 free trial as that's what the original offer stated. I apologize this wasn't clear to all staff that the +$3 rule didn't apply." Like it was a couple of staffers manually charging it wrong. Ugh.
