I have a cupboard full of mis-matched dishes, mostly hand-me-downs from relatives with a few odd pieces that I purchased mostly during and right after college. They are almost all chipped, scratched, or otherwise ugly. DH and I decided today to scrap the lot and shop for something new.
I don't know where to start. I do like china best, but it chips and breaks so easily. I dislike the old, heavy stoneware, though I admit the stoneware I have is from the '70's so maybe there's been breakthroughs.
I'm open to suggestions. Do you love your everyday dishes? What should I be shopping for?

Corelle are good. Nice patterns, very light, and they don't chip easily. Also, they are a decent price point.

I've used Corelle for almost the entire time I've been married (28yrs) and it's great for us. Sturdy and these days, the fact that they're light is a major plus for us.

Another Corelle gal here. Lots of nice patterns, you can get round or square plates, lots of accessories with the same pattern (napkin holder, hot plates, etc.) They're thin so you can have a stack of them in the cupboard that won't be any taller than maybe two or three of a heavier stoneware type plate. And they almost never break. Unless of course they fall onto a ceramic tile floor -- then they either bounce or shatter into billions of pieces. Ask me how I know that.

I have Pfaltzgraff dishes for everyday -I picked a pattern that I felt would work for me longterm (Filagree - it's all white) and I've added and replaced pieces as needed for almost 25 years now. It is stoneware but not as heavy as some of the patterns, imo.
I dislike Corelle personally

To be honest I love ours. I had a gift card and needed new plates and needed to have a lot of plates for an event. I ended up purchasing 2 sets of catering boxes from Pottery Barn. www.potterybarn.com/products/caterers-12-piece-dinnerware-set/ We have had them for 4.5 years. Use them everyday, our kids use them to (they are 3 and 5) and we have 24 dinner, 24 salad, 24 of each of the two types of bowls. We have only broken one - and it was a bowl that slipped out of dh's hands when he was washing. They are fabulous, I don't think we have any chips. Yes, they are just plain white, but they are well made and look nice and I can change up placemats/napkins/tableclloths nightly for a different look if I need to. Plus finding serving dishes to match - since they are white - is really easy. I love them!

We use Fiestaware for our every day dishes. I used to have Corelle but after it began to chip and scratch, and even break, I gave up and gave in to Fiesta. I have only broken one small plate. They are sturdy and I love the mix and match color combos

Corelle here also. The only problem I have with the Corelle is I'm tired of it. I've had this stuff for at least 25 years and it's still good as new. Not one broken or chipped piece in all that time. And I have service for 16 so I really can't justify buying new. But, like I mentioned, I'm so tired of it. It's definitely more than paid for itself.

Also a former Corelle user who switched to Fiestaware. I like the sturdier feel and love the mixture of colors in my cabinet.

We have Wedgwood White for our everyday. It's simple, plain white, feels and looks beautiful. And of course, goes with everything. It's bone china and we've had it for over 16 years and have only broken one piece and dint have any chips - bone china is sturdier than people think. I'm personally not a fan of Corelle.

Another corelle user. Check their website for all the patterns available. It doesn't chip or scratch and is pretty durable. I have managed to break a couple of bowls over the years but it isn't easy The only thing you might not like, they stick to white/off white back grounds with colorful designs.

I have Corelle. I don't love them but I was tired of my old heavy dishes so I bought those. They are cheap and readily available.

I love my Fiestaware, but it is heavy/bulky. I used Corelle for a long time, and it is sturdy, lightweight, and inexpensive. I gave my Corelle to my kids when they moved out.
Mil has a beautiful Wedgewood "everyday" pattern, I think it's called Provence. She's had it for years and it has held up very well.

I love my Fiesta. I don't find it heavy, just sturdy. With all of the colors, it's easy to mix and match. If you aren't into having multicolored dishes, you can buy a whole set in just one color. They have lots of colors to choose from, including white. I like that they are solid colors, because I would definitely get sick of a pattern after a while.

We have had two different set of stoneware and switched to Corelle a few years ago. Love it. I don't need my dishes to weigh a ton. We bought ours at the outlet store so we could get only the pieces we wanted. I have no use for saucers with tiny cups!

I'm another corelle user. Turns out there's an outlet store about 2 hours from us so if I lose or break something, we can get a single replacement there. Plus they have accent pieces that would match at least 4 other patterns. We found it one weekend when we went driving out of boredom. Came home with three bowls, a dessert plate and two salad plates to replace or add to what we had.

I buy Ikea dishes. They are not expensive and when enough of them chip, I get a new color. I'm not sold on keeping the same dishes for years and years. My tastes change, my decor changes, and I don't want to be tied down to something I spent a lot of money on and feel guilty when I want new stuff.
We also don't have a dishwasher, so they get more banging around than most people would have and a set of them will last me years and years before I replace them.

How about purposefully mismatched? I've helped a couple people assemble all-white sets from thrift stores. The mix of patterns and shapes looks fun (at least to me) and it's not the end of the world when something breaks. (Of course, "Bar Keepers Friend" metal cleaner will come in handy to remove all those grey utensil marks.)
If you don't do "used," you can achieve the same look by buying two different service-for-four sets and then buying white (or colorful...or patterned) serving prices and accessories.

I can't stand Fiestaware. I just don't get the appeal. It's right up there with Lularoe leggings. I just don't get it. I like clean, modern, minimalist kind of stuff.
I just recently bought the Verge line from Crate and Barrel.(just not the mugs) I love it.
If I want to dress up the table using those dishes, I can just add color or prints with other things, chargers, flowers, different serving bowls etc.

I am not a fan of Corelle either. I find they break too easily. I love the feel of a heavier plate. Here is a set I just got from Mikasa. Love it!

I love Corelle! I need to get some. With my back pain lifting heavy dishes is difficult sometimes. I love the light weight!

I'm a Corelle girl. Had stoneware for years, and it's just so heavy. I have arthritis in my hands, and just getting stoneware plates in and out of the cupboard was challenging. Corelle is super light and takes up almost no room when the pieces are stacked. They are some sort of tempered glass, so not plastic. I love mine and there are lots of patterns. My faves are the various black and white lines patterns. Oh, they're inexpensive too.

My tastes change, my decor changes, and I don't want to be tied down to something I spent a lot of money on and feel guilty when I want new stuff. I'm not wed to holding on to dishes forever either. I decided years ago, with two rambunctious boys that I also didn't want to use something that would cost a lot to replace if it got broken. So off to Goodwill I went. I bought china-it is all mismatched-but the plates are usually less than $2 each so replacing a broken piece doesn't make you cringe. I kind of like the non-matchingness of it, it fits my personality and we use it every day. The funniest part though is all broken pieces can be laid squarely at my feet-the boys haven't broken even a single plate. I, on the hand, have been responsible for a couple of plates, bowls and at least one tea cup.

I've had Corelle forever. I like that they're lightweight and that they stack without taking up too much room in the cabinet. I have a white plate with a fluted edge that looks nice on the table with my french white Corning casserole dishes and really any random white serving dish.

I didn't realize Corelle had so many options. Love the look of their modern square plate collections. I do like that they don't break, but don't love the thinness. I'll check them out in person at the store - a pretty dish and matching accessories could make up for the weight. Thanks!
