If being in a permanent vegetative state is "healthy as ever," then I guess she is. This is a horrible story. They should have let her go.

The story is that the family's actions contributed to her hemorrhage and subsequent brain death. So I imagine there's a lot of guilt associated with what happened to her, which might be why they're so dedicated to keeping her "alive."

She was having routine dental surgery to remove her tonsils.

(really. I'm not trying to stir something up, I'm just curious because I hadn't heard that but I've not followed this story super close) She actually does look much better than I thought she would.

My recollection is that food was fed to her in the post-op room by a relative despite being told not to feed her.

I'm confused by the last two pictures in that article. "Nailah Winkfield with husband Marvin" That's the woman portrayed as her mother in all the other pics "Jahi McMath (right) with her family at the wedding of her mother to stepfather Martin Winkfield" This is clearly a different woman marrying a man with a different name, could be a typo, although he does looks very similar to the man in the previous pic. Is that her mother?

She was having routine dental surgery to remove her tonsils. She was having a tonsillectomy, but it was not "routine." She had obstructive sleep apnea and was overweight, so they had to cut out extra tissue. It wasn't just the tonsils. The family was told not to feed her in the PICU and they did anyway. Either the food or sucking with a straw dislodged the clots and led her to bleed out. That's how she ended up this way.

If I recall correctly she was having a surgery in which her tonsils were removed along with her adenoids to improve her sleep apnea. After the surgery the family was told not to give her any food and the grandma fed her pieces of a cheeseburger. She started bleeding uncontrollably and never recovered. The family told the media it was a routine tonsillectomy but the actual surgery was a lot more involved.

It is very sad, to say the least. She's alive, but only because of the ventilator and tube feeds. I can't believe she's responding or following commands in any way, I sincerely doubt it's possible. Based on the article the family is 100% responsible for her care, which tells me she has no medical support like home health. I hope they're taking care to turn her frequently to prevent pressure sores/ulcers.

(really. I'm not trying to stir something up, I'm just curious because I hadn't heard that but I've not followed this story super close) She actually does look much better than I thought she would. This incident was local for us and heavily covered in local news. Plus talking to people in the medical community ... I really can't tell you if this was something in the news or just gossip I heard. After you have your tonsils out, the instructions are for no solid food for a period of time, no chewing, that sort of thing, because you don't want to displace the blood clots forming over the open wounds. So the story is that her family fed her a cheeseburger when she was in the recovery room, and that's what caused the hemorrhaging to start. I can't vouch for the truth of it, that's just the story I heard at the time. ETA I see others heard the same story. I feel better now, like I'm not merely spreading gossip.

She does look beautiful, but I can't say that she looks healthy. My heart absolutely breaks for this momma. I had to momentarily face a 'what if' scenario when my son went in for extensive open heart surgery. I am just thankful to God that I never had to decide whether to keep him alive in that state or not. I cannot think of a more difficult thing to have to do. I do not know what I would have done but I think it would have been just as heartbreaking to have a child in that state forever as it would have to lose them and lay them to rest. Those photos tear me up.

That family is taking better care of her dead than they ever did alive. It's unutterably sad.

Googling around, found this on the interwebs.
I forgot to quote this when I read it, but her grandmother is a nurse and she bled quite a bit after surgery from her mouth and the hospital just kept bringing new bowls to contain it, until her grandmother became irate and demanded that a doctor come in. But the fact that she would go to ICU after surgery, instead of a regular room, says it was not routine. But she came out of surgery alert.

holy cow, I didn't know about her family feeding her. What is our obsession with food and "healing" our pain (and others) with food. Good god the girl was already obese and in there for apnea. So feeding her a cheeseburger when told not to was a great idea? Now I'm good and riled up.

I don't even understand the photos. My dad was in intensive care for a month and on a ventilator and the change physically in just 30 days was astonishing. He atrophied so fast that he was almost unrecognizable. I don't see how - coma, brain dead, not brain dead, etc. - that she looks relatively healthy, skin in perfect condition, etc.

I can't believe they are not photo shopping or something. It certainly is a sad and tragic story.

She was having routine dental surgery to remove her tonsils. Well I see it's already been covered but it was not dental surgery and it tonsilectomy/adnoidectomy with additional procedures to help correct OSA are not routine.

doesn't it depend on how much they're feeding her through her feeding tube, TPN, or whatever it is?? If you fed someone more calories than they needed, wouldn't they still be obese?

Muscles are still going to atrophy no matter how much food you have. There's just a different look to someone who has been in a coma for a period of time - even a matter of several weeks but certainly months or years.

It is such a sad story. I didn't know that they family had fed her against doctors orders. I can imagine their guilt is what made them want to keep hope alive. There is no way someone in a vegetative stat could look this good after a year. The photos posted are probably old photos. I imagine they post "updated" photos in hopes of getting donations to help pay for her care.

I think I also saw that they interfered with or delayed the medical staff trying to help when the bleeding started. I don't remember which it was, though. Very sad for the whole family! ETA- Nevermind- someone else has more accurate information upthread. I will say though that my SIL had her tonsils removed at age 21. She spent the night in the hospital (this was 20 or so years ago). Several days later she was at our house for a birthday party and could only eat baby food and ice cream- no birthday cake for her.

I've also wondered if the daily mail pays them for these "updates" as they are the only site that ever seems to have them and there are no medical updates just hear say and pictures from the family.

Do we know that the cheeseburger story is fact?
I mean, did the family confess? Or is it the defense offered by the hospital as a defense against a med mal suit?
