#1 We are going to the Grand Canyon this summer. We are flying into Las Vegas, picking up a rental car and driving onto Flagstaff where we will stay 6 nights. We are returning to Vegas for the final two nights. We have tickets to see Penn and Teller and so we decided to stay right there at the Rio, where their show is. It is off strip and that part in fine with us. The hotel looks huge, the pool looks awesome and the rooms are 600 square feet. BUT the reviews are mixed and the bad reviews are really bad, so I am starting to get nervous. We booked a refundable room via Priceline. Does anyone have any experience with The Rio?
#2 we have never been to Vegas before. Kids are DS17, DD16 and DS14. What are your best tips on things to do, places to go and places to eat.
#3 I saw you can "rent a lounge chair" at the pool for $20 a day! Yikes! Are the "unrented" chairs up for grabs first come first serve or do you have to rent one to get one?

There are about 3000 "what should I do in Vegas?" Threads that have been started on this board. Search for them or Google it or check tripadvisor. Answering these threads gets exhausting. I don't know you and have no idea what you would want to do.

I enjoyed the seafood buffet at the Rio, but that was about 10 years ago.
As long as you have a car, you should go to the Hoover Dam.
With kids, I'd do the fountains at the Bellagio, check out the garden in the conservatory while you are there. They have a good breakfast buffet. The Mirage has a Secret Garden and dolphin habitat. Google it for a coupon.

I haven't stayed at the Rio. With our kids we have always stayed at the Hilton Grand Vacatuoon club at the north end of the strip. I like that there is no casino and we get a kitchen and two bedrooms plus a pull out in the living area.
Mine like to see a show (Blueman, Stomp or Cirque). When they were younger they liked the amusement park at Circus Circus. They like the roller coaster and video games at NY NY.

We haven't stayed there, but SO was at a multi-day convention there last summer, and he says he didn't hear anyone complaining about the rooms. (And the entire block for this year's convention was snapped up in a matter of days once the convention dates were announced.) I mean, the first time I went to Vegas, we stayed at the Luxor because the rooms were ridiculously cheap at like $30 a night. It was just fine. There is a shuttle from the Rio to Harrah's and I think Bally's/Paris if you want to go to the strip. (It's free, but it's nice to tip the driver a couple of bucks.) We did the High Roller giant ferris wheel/observation wheel. That was kinda fun, although I think the Paris eiffel tower had a slightly better view of the strip. New York New York has an arcade and roller coaster. And the Hershey store. Across the street are the Coca-Cola and M&Ms stores. Luxor still has the Titanic exhibit if your kids might be into that. There's the Miracle Mile shops at planet hollywood. Sure, it's a mall, but it's got a ton of stores they don't have in my neck of the woods. Can't answer your pool questions, sorry! I don't usually go to the pool (although my resolution for this year is to go out there once). And as far as food, are you looking for budget friendly? Particular cuisines?

The Rio should be fine. I believe they have a bowling alley on site. The seafood buffet on Friday night always gets great reviews. It's been a few years since we went to it last. There is a shuttle to Paris/Ballys which is a great way to get to the strip. Be prepared for lots of walking. No matter what you do you have to walk. The previous posts have some good idea. Since you have kids with you I would add in going to Hash House a Go Go www.hashhouseagogo.com/vegas/ You should be able to get chairs by the pool. You may have to search around a bit or go early and stake your claim. It is really hot even by the pools. They stack the chairs really close to one another to get maximum numbers in there. Vegas is ever growing and evolving. I would recommend researching to help match your kid's interests to things going on around the area. It sounds like a fun trip.

You have to go to Fremont Street. The kids will adore it. There is even a zip line they can do over the strip. This is the old Las Vegas strip. Very fun.
Google it and I think you will be pleased. This would be an evening thing. 2-3 hours.
Check out Dicks Last Resort for a cheap and fun meal. Think Applebee's type food. The wait staff are total "dicks" to everyone. It is fun. I think teens would love it. It is in the Excalibur.

I would love to see Penn and Teller sometime! So far we've just done the Cirque shows, which are always fabulous. Rio is still supposed to have the best seafood buffet in Vegas.
There are lots of other attractions in front of the hotels in addition to the Bellagio fountains. The volcano at the Mirage is nice at night. The Canals inside the Venetian are interesting. That and Caesars are good places for an indoor "sidewalk" cafe to grab a bite to eat. There are roller coasters at New York and Stratosphere. Circus Circus makes it easy to win the prizes, pretty inexpensively, so it's a lot better than the rigged games at other carnivals. They have a trapeze show in the center.
You won't run out of fun things to do with teenagers, but you will run out of time.

The seafood buffet is now "merged" with the carnival buffet. I'm not sure how it works but they are now in the same space. The hash house a go go closes at 3 so don't plan on that for dinner. Guy Fieri has a new Mexican restaurant in the Rio that opened in the last week or so. I haven't been yet but think it would be fun to check it out. I enjoy the Shark Reef at Mandalay Bay, not a fan of the Secret Garden at Mirage. Fremont street is a fun atmosphere but keep in mind that there are "street performers" that are in varying stages of ummm dress or undress. Women with just their n*****s covered with x's for example, men with their parts in a sock.

No particular cuisine. I'm a budget friendly gal while DH is more than willing to spend money on a good meal. So probably a mix of both. The restaurants we WILL revisit on our next trip: the Steakhouse at Camelot (in Excalibur), Wolfgang Puck's restaurant in the MGM, and Nine Fine Irishmen at New York New York. The Steakhouse does have a prix fixe menu that is $35 per head, which is more than I'd pay at home, but seems to be kind of mid-priced for Vegas. I also like California Pizza Kitchen, which is at the Mirage, but that is a chain that some people have near them, so I get how that is less of a draw. New York New York has a Shake Shack, which I've never been to but I guess is a "famous" burger chain? I might try it next time. There is also a restaurant in NYNY called America. It's got your basic (ordinary) American choices-- sandwiches, burgers, spaghetti, breakfast options. Not gourmet by any stretch, but pretty decent for the type of food it is, moderately priced, and open 24 hours if you find yourself in need of that. You can check out most restaurants by going to any of the hotels' websites. A lot of them will let you make reservations online, too. Have a good time!

Someone entered our room while three of us were sleeping, acceded the locked safe, took our purses, phones, and all other electronics as well as cash and jewelry that were locked in the safe. Altogether they got us for around $25k. Hotel security told us if we wanted to file a police report we could find the police station, we could google it (with no phones) and that there was a taxi line outside. I Am a million percent certain it was Rio staff. There are reports going back 7 years with people with an identical experience, but it never occurred to me too google theft at the Rio before our stay to see. Beware!

We were just there in January.
If you like good food, check out Gordon Ramsay's steakhouse. It's in Paris and probably one of the best meals I've ever had.
Also, for the kids, you can get a combo pack of the Eiffel Tower and the Ferris Wheel for $30. (One ticket at the High Roller (ferris wheel) is 38.95/ea. We went up on the Eiffel tower at the same time Bellagio did the light show (every half hour, I think, at night) so we saw the strip all lit up, and the light show. It was enjoyable.
After that we walked to the High Roller (approx 10 minutes).
P.S. The combo tickets are sold at the Eiffel Tower.
Our friends went to Titanic exhibit and loved it.
I second the zip lining downtown. Note: you first go buy a ticket for the time you are to get in line (for us it was an hour later). Our ticket time was 8:40 - time we did the zip line 11:40 - hopefully you don't have the same experience.
Enjoy your trip.

I will suggest Red Rock Canyon outside the strip for a short day trip if you have a rental car and you have teenagers. It's just the cost of getting in per car (maybe $5-`10) and it is beautiful! Personally I think there is a lot on the strip that I wouldn't want teenagers to see (people handing them brochures and business cards that could be found on prostitute/porn sites etc) The Red Rock Casino and Hotel off the strip is the only one I'd be willing to take my kids to honestly, but I understand others have differing parenting styles and opinions.
Years ago right after Rio opened, we went to the deck at Rio that overlooks the rest of the strip and while beautiful, I have to say it is not one of my favorite hotel/casinos and I wouldn't choose to stay there personally. I tend to like Paris/Bellagio/etc if we don't have kids with us. (I've stayed at MGM, Mandalay Bay, etc and Paris is my favorite cost wise and location wise).

We haven't had an issue with folks handing our teens things on the strip. They seem to do a good job not wasting their time messing with teens. There is still a lot of eye opening things to see...ads on taxis for example.

The majority of our trip will be spent in Flagsaff. We are renting a car as soon as we get in and staying 6 days. We plan on going to the Grand Canyon, Sedona- Red Rock, Hoover Dam, Painted Desert and a few other sites, plus we have family in the area. So we will have a car still and a trip to Red Roxk Canyon is an option and would fall in line with the rest of our trip. The reason we will be in Las Vegas the last two days is to see Penn and Teller, which is in The Rio- and why we choose The Rio and fly home. I'm still debating that choice. We plan to be selective about where we take the kids while in Vegas and since we have never been before ourselves I am trying to get a game plan together now.

We live withing driving distance to Las Vegas and often play sports tournaments there. That means we go there often...and many times with kids. They have been going their whole lives. We don't encounter a lot of negative behavior/things. We try to stay at Mandalay Bay when we go with the kids. It is a bit removed from the strip and fairly kid friendly. They have shops and a great pool. It is in need of a remodel imo but it is still nice.
Someone above mentioned the miracle mile shops (there is a Pink's Hot Dogs there which is very kid friendly.) I second New York, New York and the surrounding strip shops with kids. I love the atrium at Bellagio and my kids love the fountain. That is a must see. Watch Ocean's Eleven before going. My other choice would be Caesar's Palace-there us a lot to do there even with kids. There is a Nike town in the back of their shops.
I love Fremont and would recommend it but it does take a chunk of time and could be skipped. The Main Street Station casino on Fremont has a piece of the Berlin Wall in one of the men's bathroom. I don't know why but I think that is cool.
The people with the cards are not allowed to hand them to people underage. They will not attempt it. Although people drop them-avert eyes from the ground on the strip. There are a lot of street performers that are very talented and worth stopping to watch. The cartoon character people dressed up should be avoided at all costs.
Your daughter (and you) would love the Cosmopolitan. It is easy to walk through and so pretty.
2 days in Vegas with a show will go quick. Create a plan and try to go to places next to one another. The heat and the walking is really draining.

Do they like rides? The top of the stratosphere has some as does NYNY.
Is there a reason you picked the Rio? I'd stay on the strip, even with kids.
Walking the strip at night is fun. They could do the world of coke tour at the coke store.
We didn't take our kids to any of the expensive restaurants as we could easily drop $200. My teen and tween loved the buffets so we took them to a couple of those. The one in Planet Hollywood has a myriad of cupcakes that my 11 year old loved.

In the Cosmopolitan, there are a couple of casual restaurants with reasonable prices for families; one called Holsteins that does massive burgers, fries and shakes (boozy ones too), another called China Poblano by Jose Andres that does both Mex and Chinese. There is also a 'secret' pizza place one floor up that's not so secret. At the top of the escalators, walk forward and go down the narrow hallway with all the albums hung along the wall. You can order a slice or a whole pizza and eat it on the free chairs or tables gathered around the escalator area.
At Aria, there's a bakery that does Nutella donuts. Nom, nom, nom. At the Venetian, Bouchon Bakery has several of their amazing variations of popular cookies like their riff on the Oreo or Nutter Butters. I will do bad things for their "Better Nutters".
I think the Hash House A Go Go at the Linq is open later than 3p.m., but I could be wrong. Share the servings because they are massive. My DH and I can't finish one order of Chicken & Waffles.
There are a couple of restaurants we like that are not on the strip: McMullan's Irish Pub (I die for their Shepherd's Pie) and Rollin Smoke Barbeque (the area looks sketch, but it's always busy and the food is on point).
If you haven't noticed by now, I'm all about the food. LOL
I still haven't been to see Penn & Teller. Can't get my Cirque addicted hubby to try something new! I'm jealous of you!

We chose The Rio because we are seeing Penn and Teller there. That is really the only reason. if you can change without fees, I would. Staying on the strip for first time visitors is so much cooler. Your kids and you will want to be on the strip. Better to drive to the show than have to constantly drive to and from the strip. I am leaning toward switching.
