I've not been rushed through the checkout like, not even at Wal-Mart. I do put the divider down if someone is behind me, since it's not close enough for them to reach.
Cashiers are timed on how long it takes them to check customers out and they can be penalized for being too slow (per the management's version of "slow").

Is common courtesy a thing of the past in grocery store checkouts now? I was at Walmart a week ago and was in the checkout lane. I had about 7 items and they came to about $35. I ran my debit card and was waiting on the cashier. As I was waiting for my receipt, I started putting my bags into the cart. I looked back at the pin pad and saw my total was now almost $43+. I then saw the cashier scanning the male customers items that were right next to mine, no divider was used, and bagging them. I told the cashier to stop, that those were not my items. She took them out and voided them. I told her I need my receipt please. She just looked at me and then she turned right around and started scanning them again. I again told her those were not my items and now the total was $70+. She voided the 3 items off again and finally gave me a receipt. This happened in less than a couple minutes and the male customer never once spoke up. I was polite and didn't say anything, just went on my way and double checked my receipt before I left the store. Today I was at a grocery store next to our home and got a few things for dinner. A customer, an older gentleman, pushed his cart right up to me, making me step beyond the pin pad to be able to pay. Then put h is groceries literally next to mine, but he did use a divider. Before I could even get my items off the bagging carousel, the cashier was bagging the next customer's groceries. This seems to happen more and more often these days. I never let my daughter's encroach on another person in checkout or any line for that matter. And I do the same with my my grandchildren. DD is very firm about expecting manners from my grand children. Is this becoming the way of the world anymore? Are we to entitled to wait our turn and be polite? Growing up, please, thank you and your welcome were expected to be used. My Mom and Dad expected it of my sister and me. I am continually amazed at people who are supposedly gown ups who are incapable of exhibiting politeness when standing in line waiting. We recently went to Cabo during spring break travel weeks. In customs lines, all manner of craptastic behavior was boldly demonstrated by all kinds of adults. One blonde woman in her twenties announced loudly no less than 8 times "I hate this line". She signed deeply. She flung her long blonde hair around and switched hips like she was a runway model. Clearly, she thought people around her cared. It was embarrassing. No less than a thousand people snaking through customs in a small tourist airport...and she thinks it's ok to announce her grave displeasure with a line. I just kept thinking "honey if you can't handle standing in a line, I feel for the shock that's going to come when a real problem comes your way."

I'm another that leaves my cart at the far end of the belt until all of my stuff is unloaded and go in front of it. I leave it between me and the person behind me, and then put a divider in front of my stuff (if there's not one there already) and one behind my stuff as well. Then I don't budge from the card reader thing until I am done paying, and only then I'll move forward to bag my stuff. I typically don't buy a whole cartful of stuff at one time anyway unless I'm at Costco, which is where we buy most of our groceries. Because they leave all the big heavy stuff in my cart, I don't have to worry about someone else's stuff getting mixed up with mine.
I hate going to the regular grocery store and don't like buying the bulk of my groceries at places like Target either. I might pick up the occasional grocery item there that I don't want to buy in bulk or if there is a particular brand that Costco doesn't sell. If I'm shopping at Target and buying anything big like a ginormous pack of toilet paper or paper towels, I'll park that at the end of the belt and put all of the other smaller stuff in front of it with a divider behind it.

Just curious, the baggers at Publix bag the groceries and then put them in your buggy-do they not do that at your grocery store? I can't leave my cart between the person behind me and myself because as the cashier scans the items, he/she will slide them to the end of the counter, the bagger puts them in bags and then into your cart which has been pushed to the end right next to them. Is that not how it is done every where?

It's just as easy for me to put it in a cart behind me (which would be just putting it down to my left) as it is to put it in a cart in front of me (which would mean putting it down to my right).

Our brand new grocery store here has the pin pads in a wonky place. It is nearer to the middle of the belt or at least closer to beginning than any other store in our area. It has created me a great deal of stress because you can't really pay and let the person behind you load their stuff on the belt. They are literally on your ass and you just want to pay. I usually always have the cart behind me but when you just run in for a few things and have a basket it is a nightmare.
One lady, 65ish, was beyond rude as she nailed me with her cart, reached across her cart in dramatic fashion to reach the belt, making loud statements about how rude I was being standing in the middle (paying) but when she hit my kid with her cart I did not behave in a manner that any would find respectful....

Is that not how it is done every where? Nope. There is no bagger at the major grocery stores here, you do it yourself after you pay. Thankfully there is enough space between the pin pad and the far end of the belt so the cart can be between me and the next person without preventing them from loading their stuff onto the belt behind mine. Target cashiers bag the items but I don't like buying most of my groceries there because I get better prices (for the most part) elsewhere.

I keep my cart in front of me because I have kids and up until the baby came my oldest was always in the cart seat. I don't like having a cart in between me and my kids. I don't think anything horrible would happen but I want to hear what people are saying to my kids, I don't want them touching their hands, etc. I don't even like going through the line at Harris Teeter with kids because they don't have a belt, you just push your cart up to the cashier and then walk around to the right side of the checkout. Basically your kid is just hanging out on the opposite side of the register while they ring up your items with the scanner gun. I just go through the self checkout there these days.
Even at Wal-Mart I will swing my cart around the bag carousel so that I can put the bags right into in my cart when they are full. Because of where the payment terminal is, if the cart was behind me I would have to practically walk half way back down the checkout lane to put the bags in. It would also be in the way of the person behind me. And most people stay behind their cart so there is the natural personal space bubble or if they don't have a cart, will stay behind the register display (which is far enough away for me).

I don't think I've ever seen someone put their cart behind them. If they do, there doesn't seem like there would be much room for the person behind them to put their stuff on the belt. But anyways, a lot of stores here still have bag boys/girls. So, they always pull your cart from you and place it at the end so they can put the bags in them. And if the cashier bags your stuff, they usually slide your bags down to the end anyways.

This is a major pet peeve of mine. Esp with all the stealing of cc numbers. I am often waiting to sign the electronic signature, and the next person is literally standing right NEXTTOME. ![???](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/huh.png) WTH? so now I have started going in front of my cart, so the cart is between me and the next person. It's more of a hassle loading up the stuff, but at least I don't have someone standing ON me. I do this as well but I find it easier to put my groceries in the cart this way. It keeps some distance between my pin number and the customer behind me.

Is that not how it is done every where? You can't do it at King Sooper's either, because the cart goes on the other side with the cashier and they take the items out of the cart to scan them. The bagger bags them and puts them in the cart that was the customer's in line before you.

For those people who crowd right up next to me while I'm trying to pay, I have no problem stopping, looking them right in the eye and saying "When I am finished paying you can stand where I am standing but until I am finished you need to step back".

This is literally one of my biggest pet peeves in life. I cannot understand how people are so unaware of personal space in a line. If I'm unloading my cart, I'm not going to go any faster if you stand so close to me that I can feel you breathing. I can only go as fast as the belt moves! I always put the divider behind my stuff, even if no one is behind me because on a few occasions I've had other people's stuff scanned in with mine. The diligence on my part about placing the divider has stopped that. I have shoved a cart backward more than once when someone is shoving it at me while I attempt to swipe my card. I mean who does that? How rude do you have to be to shove your cart into me while I'm swiping my card? ![???](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/huh.png) The looks of surprise and death starves I get after shoving it back make me giggle. I mean you're going to ram with a cart while I try to pay, you think I'm going to stand there and let you assault me with your cart? You've got to be kidding me! I am normally a patient person but put me in line with an encroacher and watch out! lol I see it in the deli too. They crowd the deli case so closely trying to be waited on quicker, all while holding a number for their turn. If they were any closer they might as well go behind the counter and slice their own meat!!!

OMG! This happened to me today! I was at my usual grocery store-the one I opt to pay slightly higher prices at because they have (or had!) customer service. The cashier scanned all my items but only bagged about 3/4 of them. I thought she was just dealing with my payment and would finish up after she handed me my bill Nope! She left the rest on the till and started on the next order. When I said "excuse me you haven't finished with my order yet" she looked at me and said "oh! Did you want those in bags?" WTF!? No I don't want the rest of my order I'll just leave it all behind on the till!! I was not happy and went to the customer service desk to ask if their policy regarding bagging had changed. I was told it hadn't so I told them they should advise their staff of that!

I agree with you.
I hate that I'm trying to make sure I have all my stuff off the bagging carousel and the cashier is already loading the next customer's things into it. I feel like asking them to give me a second.

Something that seems to happen to me often enough that it's really annoying: I'm behind someone in line, at the grocery store or maybe Walmart, my stuff safely behind theirs on the belt with the spacer bar firmly in place. Then, as the cashier turns to help them complete the transaction, my stuff continues to move because she has forgotten to turn off the conveyer belt. So, here's my items, crushing each other against the edge of the till, and the cashier is blissfully oblivious. I am frantically trying to keep my items in place, and finally I have to shout STOP! Sometimes it's harmless, but other times I've had bread or other fragile items smooshed. Am I the only one this happens to?

I have had people crowd me a little at the pin pad but I just ask them to back up so I can finish my transaction. I don't always use a cart or in places like BJs the cashier takes the cart to load it up as they scan items - so putting my cart behind me won't always be an option.
I've never had the cashier ring up other people's items with my order. It seems most people where I shop are good about using the divider or watching when there is no divider.

One of the stores I frequent has the best system. Their carts have a drop down front and no conveyer belt before the scanner. The checker just pulls the cart up close, takes the item out of the cart, scans and then it goes on the conveyer to the bagger. It is much more efficient and keeps that buffer between customers which I love. I have been "rear-ended" one too many times with someone's cart.

The issue I had last week at Walmart wasn't that there weren't any dividers. Just the cashier refusing to schooch them down far enough so I could reach it and use it. So I stood there, unable to load anything, because I know the minute I do, it's going to be like Stef said above, and all my items are going to squish into the person's in front of me. But yes, I get the personal space issue, that also drives me nuts. Getting on top of me while I'm still trying to pay is beyond rude!!!

I'm am not above *politely* asking people to BACK OFF. I just say, in my sweetest voice, "Would you mind? I really need my personal bubble." OR.... Start coughing really loud and hock up a big loogie and they'll usually take a big step back without you even having to ask... I use the cough method on the plane. Works most times to keep people from sitting in the middle seat next to you when the flight is not full. Except the one time, someone sick sat next to me.

I've found that people behind me in the grocery line don't even realize that they are blocking the CC machine with their cart. After putting my groceries in the cart and I go back to pay, they usually realize that I can't reach the machine, they apologize and move back. No biggy. I don't think I've encountered anyone purposely trying to block my way.

I don't encounter too many rude people at the checkouts, but just thought of a funny incident.
This one guy at Wal-mart raced me to the checkout. I only had one item (no cart) was walking towards the lane and he speed walked from the other direction to get in front of me, and he saw me and knew I was heading to the cashier. Even the cashier kind of had this funny look on her face when he got in front of me. And then, he proceeds to have two seperate transactions paying with a combination of gift cards, atm cards, and cash. I actually gave him a WTH look. As he was leaving, he said "Sorry." Ugh! I could have yelled at him, but it would have accomplished nothing.
