I guess my gripe about the checkout lines is when I'm in self-checkout and someone has just finished in front of me. Then they take FOREVER to bag their stuff and they don't put up the barrier to block their stuff from mine. So I'm forced to wait till they're done bagging, or else take the passive-aggressive route and start checking out my stuff so that it runs down the conveyor belt onto theirs. That is interesting because all of our self-checkout stands here don't have conveyor belts. There is no counter to the left of the machines, and to the right are the bags and you put your stuff in the bags as you scan them. Interesting how things are so different. We have some of those too, but there are always at least two lines that have full conveyor belts on self-serve. I hate the other ones because I always have trouble -- the bag doesn't register the weight of my item or something. I'm always getting the message "please retrieve your item and try again". ugh. I think they put in the conveyor belts because more and more people are using these lines for larger orders, rather than just a few things.

Sometimes something stops the belt from moving. That can be for safety, maintenance or cleaning purposes. We have a reset button I guess I never realized the belt was moving automatically. I figured the cashier was doing it. I don't pay attention, clearly! I always try to be as polite as possible when shopping. I've allowed people to get ahead of me if they don't have a lot of items and the cashier hasn't started my order yet. I try my best not to crowd, and I make sure the person ahead of me has placed all their items on the belt before I start unloading my cart. @jigglypuff, posts like yours make me laugh on this forum. Not that I doubt your efforts at politeness! Just when people talk about their extreme efforts to be aware and courteous, and I fear I'm the person in a daze, blocking the aisle, crowding people at the register, and other shopping errors...

Something that seems to happen to me often enough that it's really annoying: I'm behind someone in line, at the grocery store or maybe Walmart, my stuff safely behind theirs on the belt with the spacer bar firmly in place. Then, as the cashier turns to help them complete the transaction, my stuff continues to move because she has forgotten to turn off the conveyer belt. So, here's my items, crushing each other against the edge of the till, and the cashier is blissfully oblivious. I am frantically trying to keep my items in place, and finally I have to shout STOP! Sometimes it's harmless, but other times I've had bread or other fragile items smooshed. Am I the only one this happens to? all of the belts around here have a sensor in them - the minute they get to the end of the belt where the cashier's section/weigh scale is, they stop automatically. I've never seen one where the belt just keeps going and going! They do, but I think (at least here), there's a button that moves it from "sensor" to "continuous" and the cashier forgets to switch from one to another.

I'm sure she did! After all, one time when she was shopping there, some asshole shoved all her stuff around. The guys and gals at our HEB are really good about keeping those kind of shoppers from keeping things moving. They will take the baskets off the belt. However, I still love shopping at Brookshires. It is the only grocery store I know of where the cashier unloads your cart for you. The shopper does not put the items on the belt. It's heaven in a grocery store. You wouldn't happen to be from Southeast Tx would you? I'm originally from there and they have Brookshires (back in gbe day it was Budget Chopper). I loved shopping there!!!

Sometimes something stops the belt from moving. That can be for safety, maintenance or cleaning purposes. We have a reset button which I always use as soon as it jams unless someone has broken something. Maybe those staff who don't reset it need a supervisor to come and reset it? I would ask the cashier, because I'm curious that way! That would be a great explanation, except when the cashier wasn't able to reach anymore, she/he either moved the object that stopped the belt from moving, or pushed the button to advance the belt. So the belt mechanism wasn't broken. I have occasionally done that if there was a sticky mark on the belt, to give myself a chance to clean it before it rolled underneath. But I can't think of any other reason. I'm not going to make extra work for myself reaching further than I have to!

Wow. None of these things have ever happened to me (or I'm an insensitive lout and never noticed). At Raley's and Trader Joe's, the cashier unloads the cart, and the cashier or a bagger bags everything. Costco has a conveyor, but there's usually an employee, equivalent to a bagger, I guess, who helps with that and deals with the cart. I think at Safeway there's a conveyor, but I rarely shop there and have never had a problem. Ditto Target and Whole Foods. I've never bagged my own groceries in my life. And I've never noticed anyone pushing my stuff around, breathing down my neck, or abusing the divider bar situation.

Well I can't wait to retire. Because my slow ass is going to shop at 5 pm on Friday nights. It seems like every retiree in my town is out shopping at 5 pm on Friday night when I am trying desperately to get my groceries as fast as humanly possible and get home to make dinner. Just like the retirees who always do their banking during lunch hour on a weekday (which is the only time working people are able to get to the bank). Seriously, you have 6 other hours in the day to do your banking, why wait until the busiest time? One more reason why I'm glad I don't have any need to step foot inside a bank these days.

I was checking out at walmart one day with my 3 dds. I was putting the bags in my cart and looked over and the guy that was in line behind me was standing right in front of the card scanner thing. I looked at him and thanked him for buying my groceries. He looked confused and I said I assumed you were buying since you are standing there....you know where I need to pay. Granted, I said all of this with a smile. He was really embarrassed and then we both started laughing. He said he would if he could lol, then he apologized and moved...quickly. The cashier was cracking up, too.

The person in front of them moves, so they move, not realizing that the person still needs to pay.

What I've seen recently, more than once, are people who don't so much as PAUSE their cell phone conversation while checking out. So rude! I've even expressed to the cashier how sorry I am that some people are that rude.

Is common courtesy a thing of the past in grocery store checkouts now? I was at Walmart a week ago and was in the checkout lane. I had about 7 items and they came to about $35. I ran my debit card and was waiting on the cashier. As I was waiting for my receipt, I started putting my bags into the cart. I looked back at the pin pad and saw my total was now almost $43+. I then saw the cashier scanning the male customers items that were right next to mine, no divider was used, and bagging them. I told the cashier to stop, that those were not my items. She took them out and voided them. I told her I need my receipt please. She just looked at me and then she turned right around and started scanning them again. I again told her those were not my items and now the total was $70+. She voided the 3 items off again and finally gave me a receipt. This happened in less than a couple minutes and the male customer never once spoke up. I was polite and didn't say anything, just went on my way and double checked my receipt before I left the store. Today I was at a grocery store next to our home and got a few things for dinner. A customer, an older gentleman, pushed his cart right up to me, making me step beyond the pin pad to be able to pay. Then put h is groceries literally next to mine, but he did use a divider. Before I could even get my items off the bagging carousel, the cashier was bagging the next customer's groceries. This seems to happen more and more often these days. I never let my daughter's encroach on another person in checkout or any line for that matter. And I do the same with my my grandchildren. DD is very firm about expecting manners from my grand children. Is this becoming the way of the world anymore? Are we to entitled to wait our turn and be polite? Growing up, please, thank you and your welcome were expected to be used. My Mom and Dad expected it of my sister and me. Do you think she was attempting to charge you for his items, hoping you wouldn't notice? That might be why he never said anything. I mean she did it twice. Once is a mistake but twice seems deliberate.

This thread amuses me.
I can't conceive of the amount of angst that can be worked up over grocery shopping. Life is just hard for some people. Lol.

So one thing I always do is that _I_ put the divider down after I unload my stuff. That way I'm sure there will actually be a divider in place, whether the person behind me is considerate or not.. Also, I put the heavy stuff like cans down first, bread and eggs last, so the heaviest bags go into the cart first. This also helps if the cashier doesn't turn off the conveyor belt and you have a pile up.

No worries. I'm sure you are not one of those who are beyond rude. The reason I wanted to emphasize that I go out of my way not to be rude, is because I have had all those happen to me. Crowding, hitting me with shopping carts, etc. Just because it has happened to me, doesn't mean I'm going to do it to someone else. I swear though, one of these days I will probably snap. The unfortunate person who hits me with their cart again will get it shoved right back at them...HARD! There's only so much a person can take.

This thread amuses me. I can't conceive of the amount of angst that can be worked up over grocery shopping. Life is just hard for some people. Lol. I was thinking the same thing! I was also thinking I must be extremely lucky, as I haven't experienced any of these issues, then I realized yesterday that I go grocery shopping during the slow time for the store, so there are only a handful of other shoppers in the store! I like to go in the morning, or early afternoon. I was there yesterday at about 1:15, and I counted 3 other shoppers I saw. Other times when I drive by, the parking lot is packed, so I must hit the slowest shopping times.
