Last night he took the idea/plan to the HOA committee. They told him yes, but it had to be made of brick or stone to match the dwelling. He told her not to worry as it would not cost her any money. IMO--this shows that he (the builder) knew he created the mess and he had to clean it up. I think legally he'd be found responsible since she had documents showing approval etc. So, it should all end well for her.

Taxes are based on the land/assessed value not the individual # of building structures. But if the assessed value is higher because of this additional garage, she'll be paying extra taxes as long as she owns her home. Even so, I'm happy for the OP's friend that the issue was settled.

That's a good update. And actually having the trailer covered will extend it's life. We keep ours covered with a weather resistant breathable cover, but I would love to have it in its own building.

Taxes are based on the land/assessed value not the individual # of building structures. here it is at least based on square footage ( which a garage would add too ) and some places definitely do add for # of structures. For example if you build a permanent shed ( anything more than 120sf has to be permanent ) then it is an additions accessory structure which will be assessed though less than a house. If your state does add either sq footage or n assessment for an accessory structure then great!

I'm glad they were able to work it out. Sounds like the builder wasn't such a bad guy after all. Maybe he really believed you could.
Truthfully, I would hate to see an RV parked next to a house, but that's why I live in an HOA. I'm just happy it all worked out!

I'm glad to hear that the builder stepped up. So often you only hear stories where people try to skirt their responsibilities and play the blame game. Glad he's an honest guy and she is getting a good resolution!

ooh, she gets a giraffe shed! that's what I call RV garages. Those super tall garage doors look like giraffe houses at the zoo. I'm glad the builder stepped up and everyone was able to agree on a solution. Sounds like the builder is even going to make sure it's a nice garage.

Another potential sticking point -- cities ordinances have "set backs" -- the edge of the building must be "set back" a stated distance from the property line. The builder will probably have to get a building permit, show the plans and the set backs will be checked -- there might not be enough room for an addition -- especially a large one!

Wonderful news for your friend. Even if it does raise her taxes that should balance out with the cost she'd pay to park it offsite never mind the additional peace of mind knowing it's safely on her property.

I'm glad it's working out well for your friend. I'm another who doesn't love the look of my neighbors RV but I'm not bothered enough to make a big deal about it.

Glad the issue is on the road to resolution. She should expect the additional structure/square footage to raise her property taxes, but hopefully not more negative attention from the neighborhood watchman/critic. May she have years of happiness in her new home!

Adding a structure to the land is going to increase the value, no? I would think so. A structure like that would probably make a nice hobbyist space as well as a parking garage when the time comes to sell. This case also goes to illustrate the importance of documentation! So glad it worked out well for your friend.
