One of those weird things I happen to be thinking about today..lol.....
I just saw a commercial for about the fifth time today. It's a product called TruMoo chocolate milk. The gist of the commercial is that TruMoo is a healthy snack for your children.
Is chocolate milk a snack? It just strikes me as odd. A glass of milk and a cookie? That's a snack. A piece of fruit, some chips, a handful of nuts....all snacks. A glass of milk? To me that's, well, a glass of milk. A drink.
It's a weird and minor thing but am I the only one that thinks this way? Do you think a glass of milk, chocolate or otherwise, is a snack?

Well, it has calories and contains protein, carbs and fat. So I guess you could call it a snack.

chocolate milk can be a snack I think - it's got protein it's also promoted as a good post-workout snack because of the good mix of proteins to carbs (I get the TrueMoo coffee milk instead!)
but I think they mean that even though it's chocolate it can be a good snack option

Chocolate milk is a snack in our house. I think of it as a sugary beverage like soda, so it's a treat/snack. Sometimes we pair it with something else, but not always. Banana's and chocolate milk are an excellent post workout snack though, much better for you than sport drinks!

I'm with you, kat, not a snack. It's a drink, it might be drank at snack time, but alone it's not a snack.

I'll go for chocolate milk being a snack if you will allow for hummus and chips being dinner.

Well poo! You guys were supposed to read my original post and say, "Whaaa?! Chocolate milk isn't a snack, it's a drink". Thereby validating the fact that I'm not the lone freak in the world that thinks a beverage isn't a snack. Except a milkshake because a milkshake isn't a beverage it's a glass of ice cream. But I digress... You all had to go and use logic, but Kat it has protein and calories so of course it's a snack. Blllaapppttt (raspberry sound) whatevah refupeas, what.ev.AH. At least johnnysmom has some sense. A drink isn't a snack. Damn you can all come to my house for snacks, woohoo a couple gallons of chocolate milk and I'm set. Ok ok, the above is just me being funny. Hopefully I didn't offend anyone. I'm surprised though that most of you think it's a snack. I just truly never thought of a drink as a snack. What you said about protein etc does make sense. Hhhmm, interesting. I don't think I've changed my mind but you all do make a good point. Thanks everyone for your responses. Kat

will allow for hummus and chips being dinner. Uumm it's not? In my home any form of hummus, chunky salsa and/or guacamole with chips is a full meal.

In my house, milk is a more like a food more than a beverage. Not that I'm likely to give him just milk for a snack (and I rarely do chocolate milk, anyway) ... but if he's thirsty, he gets water. If he's hungry, he gets some kind of snack, usually accompanied by milk unless it's a dairy-heavy snack already. But this is a kid who was in the 5th percentile for weight when I got him.

To reference the diabetic thread, a glass of milk is considered a snack by itself. A glass of 1% milk has about 100 calories, 8 grams of protein and 12 carbs. Balance, wise, that's a good snack. And sadly, that is a snack and all you would get if you were me. And I would still be hungry. Luckily, I have issues with milk, so I'll stick with my Boursin cheese and mini peppers.

Do you think a glass of milk, chocolate or otherwise, is a snack? To me, a snack is edible. If I can't chew it, I don't consider it a snack. However, I can see how some would chocolate milk a snack, but in my book, it isn't - it is a drink.

I guess, yes. I hardly ever drink a glass of chocolate milk, but dh has one glass once a night. So I guess he considers it his nightly snack. And of course now I'll have to ask him when I get home. Cuz we all know how much the dh's love our odd out of the blue Pea questions

I like snacks that chew for my kids. But for myself I'd call it a snack, like I would a Coke.

sort of... I know for my nephew it was. My parents are raising him and he has a serious heart condition. He's 15 now, but when he was younger especially and even now as he's on a the transplant list he lack calcium and body weight. Chocolate milk has been his go to thing It became a bribe tool to get him to have his medicines. He also thought brown cows gave chocolate milk! He know better now of course but that will always be his thing. Dh gets it too. He's a big milk drinker anyway. I'm not a fan but I can do chocolate milk. But I will always think of my nephew when there's chocolate milk involved.

She said it's why Americans are so fat they drink (her experience in college) 6 glasses of milk a day! It changed two things for me. 1. I never insisted my daughter drink milk, she was lactose intolerant anyway but I never sought out a subsitute. 2. If she was having milk with a meal, usually cereal and breakfast I "counted " it as a dairy serving.

I don't think of chocolate milk as a snack, it's more like dessert. I also don't think of cookies as a snack, those are dessert too.

I'm not saying that Americans aren't generally "fat" but I'm pretty sure the "6 glasses a milk a day" is not normal here at all. I haven't consumed 6 glasses of milk in one day ever in my life. I haven't consumed 6 glasses of milk in any single week of my life ever. I eat a small bowl (a cup) of cereal with a quarter cup of whole Milk on Saturday nights. That's my milk consumption for the week. I'm sure I'm way under normal but 6 glasses a day is way over normal.

She said it's why Americans are so fat they drink (her experience in college) 6 glasses of milk a day! I would say I don't know of anyone who drinks that much milk in a day, but my son would drink a quart of chocolate milk every day after XC practice. He was starved by that time, and they would all stop and get snacks at the convenience store. I figured his quart of chocolate milk was a lot better than some of the other things the kids would get. He is out of school now, and actually gets a decent meal every day at college (school lunches were painfully inadequate for them). I drink Chocolate milk as a snack. I don't like white milk, but I enjoy a small glass of chocolate milk. I will often have it for breakfast. I loved LOVED Land O' Lakes 2% chocolate milk. It was nirvana. Then the switched to TruMoo and it sucks. It tastes so artificial to me. No thanks. I blame Michelle Obama.. LOL

I don't know anyone that drinks that much milk. lol 6 glasses! Wow. It'd take me a month to drink that much milk. I've not heard any doctor classify milk either way. Though to be honest I'm not in family practice so that may be why. I think I might ask this question of some colleagues as I'm now very curious to their responses.

I do know people who would regularly drink 4 glasses... One at each meal, and an after school snack.. so 6 doesn't seem such a huge leap. I never liked milk, so 1 glass a day would be a lot for me!

justkat I just went and did some research for you with some experts in the field of snacking - my 11yo son and 12yo nephew. Their responses as follows..... Me: Boys, if I say the word "snack", what do you think of? DS: Chocolate DN: Food (There you go, he said FOOD as in something you can CHEW! Score one for Team Kat.) Me: Do you think chocolate milk is a snack? DS & DN in unison: NO!!! Me: Well what is it then? DS & DN in unison: A DRINK!!! DS: Why are you asking that? (I think he was hoping to get a snack of whatever answer they'd given.) Me: Oh just some people on the internet are discussing whether chocolate milk is a drink or a snack. DS: What?!?! That's crazy! DS & DN in unison: It's a DRINK!!!

DH's employee drinks about 3-4 GALLONS of milk a week. By himself. Other than him though, I don't know anybody else that drinks more than a glass a day, if that. I'm not much of a milk drinker, historically I never have been. I probably put 1/2 cup or less on my cereal in the morning. Once in a blue moon when it's really cold here I might have a cup of hot cocoa. The only time drinking milk by itself sounded remotely good to me was when I was pregnant, and for some reason then it was soooo good chugging a big glass with dinner. Then I developed gestational diabetes which put a stop to that! I would much rather have Greek yogurt or cheese.

Yeah, I'm another one who would definitely call any liquid a drink, not a snack. Pepsi is not a snack. It is needed to wash down the buttery popcorn that is a snack. Oh, and I'm a milk lover and I have never drank 6 glasses in a day. And that includes putting it in my cereal. However, thinking back to my college days (in the 80's), the glasses they had in the cafeteria were smaller than my drinking glasses in my home. It wasn't uncommon for girls to take at least 2 glasses of whatever beverage they were having and for guys to take 3 or 4. Maybe that's where the 6 glasses is coming from?
