www.theepochtimes.com/n3/2017674-kansas-man-arrested-after-doctors-remove-octopus-from-2-year-old-boys-throat/Now, hear me out for just a second. This happened in Kansas which I think is in the middle of the US. I lived in Fukuoka, Japan which is on an island that is surrounded by water where they eat octopus regularly. I don't mean for sushi I mean like we eat chicken. You can buy them live at the supermarket (My MIL did for us...and stabbed it and boiled it). How does one acquire a live octopus in Kansas. No reputable sushi bar sells live fish. They just don't. There is a huge liability issue here. What if the animal bites the purchaser? What if they sold a fugu (blowfish) and they got some of the poison in them because preparing fugu requires a special license to do so. Is the sushi bar going to sell that, too? Then what? I am not following this logic that they were going to use it for sushi, but I can't believe a restaurant could be this stupid so as to sell a customer a live octopus. The one we had was small. I mean it was small and still it was big enough for dinner. Do people know how to clean and cook them in Kansas? I think I am in an alternate reality right now.

.Nothing in the article says anything about sushi. Nor does it say a resturant sold it to him.
eta- my iPad did not load the picture that mentioned sushi

The article said it was a 2 INCH octopus. I am guessing he bought it at a pet store for whatever reason, not realizing that you buy sushi grade fish elsewhere. (I am guessing that police "believe it was for sushi" based on what the dude told them.)

You can buy live octopus at the Korean supermarkets around here. A huge variety of different live seafood, as a matter of fact. Most Asian supermarkets have large live seafood departments - I don't know if where they lived have any, but I know that I have 3 within a 10 mile radius.

Oh wow! I had no idea. I am in a restaurant beside a Korean grocery store and they have no live pool for fresh fish or shellfish at all! The big supermarkets do but they sell clams, oysters, mussels, crab and lobster. That is it. I don't know if you can buy live octopus in my province. Maybe in Vancouver. Not sure.
The boyfriend said it was for sushi. I just don't quite get how the octopus got into the toddler's mouth.

Thee police are saying The marks on the boys face are inconsistent with the story told to them by the man. They have said his story does not match the evidence. I believe there is a lot more to this story. The 2 year old either wasn't being supervised and somehow swallowed the octopus (which seems highly unlikely) OR the man is covering up some crime. I wonder how long the boy was unconscious.

I know you can buy octopus at some pet stores. I saw a tiny octopus once. It was in one of those rodent balls that are clear but obviously it was inside that inside of an aquarium. Seeing the thing traumatized me.

I don't know the specifics but why do you think no one in the entire state of Kansas would know how to prepare an octopus? You think there are no Asians in the middle of the country? Or that only Asians know how to prepare them?

I live in Kansas. I have seen live seafood at a couple grocery stores. It doesn't take a person of Asian decent to know how to cook octopus. I'm Mexican America. Mexicans eat octopus, or as we call it, pulpo. Why would you think that someone from the Midwest not know how to cook octopus? In any event, it's a sad story and very suspicious.

In Korea they do eat live octopus on in chopsticks, I saw it on a national geographic special. The non Korean person who tried it said it was like the octopus was trying to fight him as he tried to chew so he had to spit it out. I imagine Koreans don't let small children eat this delicacy but that this method of eating octopus is not unheard of to people in Kansas since they probably also have the national geographic channel.

However, the boyfriend was NOT charged and really will they find any more evidence to try to prosecute the guy? I don't for .1 second that the boyfriend was innocent. I just don't. I have held an adult octopus in my hand and they are hard to catch. They are very hard to catch in fact. In my BIG kitchen sink it was moving all over the place. (I wish I had a cell phone to show you this...only in Japan). There is no way a 2 year old can put an octopus in his mouth. He would have to pick it up and they are slimy and put it in his mouth. My 2 year old was way off the charts brilliant with his development and he would NOT have put something like that in his mouth. Ever. Lego yes. Octopus no.

I am Italian American, second generation. We prepare and eat octopus (pulpo, or as my family says, poopoo) and many other seafoods from fresh/live seafood. Not only an "asian" thing.

Yes children eat this. You have to smother it in an oil dip so it slides down. If you down it can catch in your throat and try to crawl back out. Yum, food that really doesn't want to be eaten.

One season on the Amazing Race they had to eat live octopus in Korea. The reactions were hilarious. I don't know if I could eat something that was trying to not be eaten!

It says he's facing child abuse charges, so yes, he was charged. Unless what you really mean is that he wasn't charged with attempted homicide. And will they find more evidence? It's possible. You have to let them have some time to complete an investigation. That's why statutes of limitations are usually in terms of years, not days.

Wow I'm amazed, I don't even let my kids eat those Japanese candies you have to suck out of a package due to choking hazard so I can't imagine serving food that tries to fight it's way back out of your throat!

You can get octopus in Detroit fairly easily. People throw them on the ice at Detroit Red Wings games.
If I had a nickel for every time the OP mentioned that she lived in Japan ....seriously, it's like every thread. WE KNOW, ok OP?

I'm also in Michigan and I see them at the seafood counter of my grocery store all the time. I assume for people heading down to Detroit for a Red Wings game.

The Red Wings played the Bruins last night in Boston. In the third period a oair of octopus landed on the ice. My husband wanted to know what is the technique to throw a blobby boneless creature out onto the ice and not have it just splat on someone three rows ahead of you. And how do you get through security showing your bag of seafood? I can't even get my Dunkin Donuts into the arena. Detroit fans, any answers for him? LOL Of course that kind of octopus is a lot larger than the 2 inch octopus in the original story.

It is supposed to bring good luck. Decades ago, you had to win 8 games in order to win....something.....I don't remember what. The "8" thing led to an octopus being the Red Wings mascot, which then led to people throwing octopi on the ice at games.

I can't imagine eating something like this that is alive and moving around so much. What does it feel like in your stomach if you successfully swallow it?

A lot of cultures eat octopus as an everyday food, like others have mentioned... When I think of octopus dishes, my mind goes to Europe and the Mediterranean... Portuguese, Spanish, Italian, Greek... Portuguese friends make and 'everyday' casserole with octopus in it, and Spanish friends make an 'everyday' Spanish rice dish... Octopus, cuttlefish, and squid are pretty common these days...

I hail from Atlanta where we can't even keep a hockey team, so I don't know these things. But funny enough, I'd never heard of this until this thread...then yesterday I saw a news story that said a Red Wings fan was arrested for throwing an octopus on the ice during the game the other night. So random.
