I am a part of a newly established book club - our members are varied in ages from just out of college, to close to 80 yrs old.. Such a great mix! We've been asked to nominate books to be chosen via a poll for the next few months... Most of us have read the current, "in books" .. All the light you can't see, girl on the train etc.. Help!! Any must reads???.. Thx!..Lesa

We read The Bone Clocks last round and are about to read The Orphan Master's Son. But book club for us is more an excuse to get together than necessarily intensely review a book...

The two books that I really loved so far this year were: A Man Called Over - a feel-good book for sure. A Little Life - very intense with lots of triggers but really good. Check out the weekly reading thread as well. Lisa

We are currently reading The Boston Girl about a Jewish girl growing up in Boston during the early 1900s. Very interesting, no intense drama but an easy read.
We also just read 11/23/63 by Stephen King. Not horror. About a guy going back in time trying to stop JFK's assassination. It is over 800 pgs, so not short but a good read.

Recently - The Nightingale (Kristin Hannah) and The Fold (Peter Clines)
I'm still not finished The Fold, but Nightingale was excellent!

A Head Full of Ghosts - not in a book club but almost finished this book and I love it. Think it would make for great discussions.

Last month we read Still Alice. I really loved that book. It was so touching and I appreciated the vantage point. Next month, we are reading, A Man called Ove. Last month we read, A Spool of Blue Thread. I didn't really care for it.

This month is The Life We Bury by Allen Eskens. I'm about 100 pages into the book and think it's pretty good.

I do a book group for the library that meets at a local bar/restaurant. We tend to do "lighter" reads than other book groups, but here are books we've had good discussion about:
The Rosie Project by Graeme Simsion The Martian by Andy Weir The Boys in the Boat by Daniel Brown (this was the One Maryland One Book last year and the author came to my library) Ready Player One by Ernest Cline
We also try to do some YA books. Here are some I've done or have heard being done: Eleanor and Park by Rainbow Rowell Challenger Deep by Neal Shusterman We Were Liars by e. lockhart (great for summer because it's a fast read and it is set at the beach).
Good luck!

We're reading All the Winters After by Seré Prince Halverson and she's coming to our meeting this month to discuss it with us! We read her first book a few years ago, The Underside of Joy, which was excellent, and she came to that meeting as well. It was quite interesting to have an author at the meeting (we are fortunate that she lives nearby), we learned so much about her process of writing the book and asked a lot of questions about the characters.

Orphan Train. It was a fast read for me (which is unusual lately). It's about immigrant orphans sent out west on a train to find foster families. I really enjoyed it. I'm not sure if it was on 2peas that I heard about it or somewhere else.

In the past my Book Club really enjoyed "Bird Box" ... a bit creepy but lead to lot's of discussion which is unusual in my group because we are basically just a social club This month we are reading "13 Ways of Looking at a Fat Girl" ... it is kind of a series of essays told from the point of view of this one woman ... interesting and different from anything we've read before ... I'm only halfway through so I can't give it a rating ...

I'm in a book club that emphasizes diversity of experience. Last month, the choice was "The Book of Unknown Americans" by Cristina Henriquez. This month is "Ten Little Indians" by Sherman Alexie and next month will be "The Warmth of Other Suns" by Isabel Wilkerson.

Here are a few that we've read that led to the best discussions: Unbroken The Boys in the Boat 11/22/63 Bel Canto Circling the Sun A Fort of Nine Towers The Girls of Atomic City Bird Box My Name is Resolute Killing Jesus The Invention of Wings The Shadow of the Wind The Orphan Master's Son Code Name Verity Doc: A Novel Seabiscuit Winter Garden Cold Sassy Tree This a a combination of those books we loved and those that sparked good conversation and were a bit different in some way. I have found that popular chick-lit does not often lead to a good book club conversation. ETA: One of my personal favorites is THESE IS MY WORDS. Most of our group read it outside of book club after I raved about it!

We're reading A Man Called Ove right now, but I don't like it. Not sure I'm going to finish it. Oh, if you don't finish it at least read the last couple chapters. That IMO really made the book a winner for me.

We're reading A Man Called Ove right now, but I don't like it. Not sure I'm going to finish it. I finished it, but I didn't care for it at all. I know others loved it though, so maybe it will make for a good discussion.

Some friends recommended "A Constellation of Vital Phenomenon" and it was incredible--one of the best books I've ever read and everyone in my Book Club felt the same.

I love love loved The Glass Castle...it's a memoir, so I don't get how it's an attempt to do anything other than to make sense of the author's very unconventional upbringing...but that might make for good discussion in a book club, as there are obviously differences of opinion! I also loved Orphan Train. I stayed up until the wee hours to finish All the Light We Cannot See..had to know how it ended. I also hated A Spool of Blue Thread, but all of Ann Tyler's books leave me cold. I just don't get her appeal. I've tried repeatedly to see what others "get" in her books and I'm always just left thinking "well, that was a book about nothing".. I somehow missed that Adriana Trigiani had a new one out!! I usually love her work, but her last one The Supreme Macaroni Company was disappointing. It felt very rushed, like she just decided to quit writing toward the end, so I hope this new one is better.

We're reading "When Breath Becomes Air" by Paul Kalanithi.
A book that generated interesting discussion recently was "Station Eleven" by Emily St. John Mandel.
