In the hated word thread, I mentioned that one of my boy's has been nicknamed Boo since birth. (I think that is one of those nicknames that is more common in the south?)
Anyway, it got me thinking about nicknames for our kids. My older son doesn't really have one other than adding a 'y' to his name and my younger pretty much came out with the nickname Boo tattooed on his forehead. I am not sure what the difference is-why one got hung with a nickname and one didn't.
So what about you? Do your kids have nicknames? Have those names migrated to the outside world (does any one else call them by that name?)

I'm from a family of nickname-givers. My kids still get called by theirs, but only at home.
My pets each have numerous nicknames. My dog would answer to at least a dozen, though her actual name was reserved for when I really needed her attention.

My DD is "Boo"/"BooBoo" and we also call her "Blondie" as she's the only blonde in our family. DS is "Bubby." No idea why those names developed, but they started very early.
DD's boyfriend sometimes calls her "Boo" also, so I guess it has migrated a bit.

My family doesn't do nicknames. DH's mom calls the kids variations on their names, similar to the kardashjans (we all start with K).

All three of my girls have nicknames - Bean, French-Fry and the Weasel. My husband and I are the only ones who call them by those names.

Yes - they will still answer to them but I'm not sure they like it when called those names in public Oldest (who is 31) is Emily, we call her Em, Emmy. Middle daughter is Stacy (who is 30), we call her Stac, Staceface. Youngest Patricia (who is 28) goes by Tricia, we call her T and she hates it when someone calls her Patty lol. Grandson Brian goes by Boogie and Rock, Grandson Gabe goes by Monkey and Pebble.

I guess we aren't nickname people. None of us use them. My son does not have a nickname. I actually wouldn't be happy if his actual name wasn't used because I love his name.
I've never heard of Boo as a nickname, is that short for a name?

All my children have 2 syllable names. I've taken their first syllable and attached 'bie to the end. I would be Jigbie. If I had a Brian, he would be Bribie, etc. I don't do that anymore now that they are all adults, but I've heard them mention the others by their nickname!

yes, i called DD "roo" because she loved winnie the pooh when she was little.
i called all my kids "schmoo" as little ones, still occasionally pops out of my mouth now. their individual nicknames are plays on their name....
i would say "turkey butt" has replaced schmoo on a day-to-day basis and again, refers to any of the three.

Somehow we began calling my oldest son Smoogie-Muffin as a baby. It was so weird that it stuck for years. He's 24 now. About the only time it's used anymore is on his birthday.
The other three had variations of their actual names as is more commonly done by people.

Just the standard shortening of their names for the most part. When they were little they all had cutesy nick names (Heck, youngest had like 10 cutesy nick names and it was the cutest thing to listen to her list them all with her adorable toddler lisp.) The only one that stuck is YDS's. He's Bubba. Every family has to have a Bubba, right? They do come out for the rest of them if DH is feeling particularly sentimental.

Yep, in order - Bud, Bit and Boo. My DD's has evolved from Baby Bit to Lil Bit to Bit. They are 24, 21 and 18. They all still answer to them.
The oldest is just a shortened version of his "real" name which is not his real name. He is a IV. Which none are those names were gonna work so we settled on what we call him now. DD's name is Elizabeth and Bit was just easier to her big brother and later her younger brother. And heck we are from the south, so Elizabeth being shortened to Bit was just going to happen at some point. Better than Bitsy, IMO. I don't really remember how the third one's came about. It wasnn't short for anything. It just worked in the call out of all three names as we were headed out the door.

When DD was little we called her a variety of things...Sweet Baby, Little Bunny, Goofy Pants. Now her nicknames are shortened versions of those... Sweets, Goofy etc.
My Brother calls DD Boo because he thought she looked like Boo from Monsters Inc. when she was little.

Boy, Bamb, Belle
Only the last has any relation to their name -and she only ended up with it because it worked with the others (all B's)
My oldest's name doesn't shorten in the States and while it does in England, none of us like the diminutive.
My middle child's name has a gazillion diminutives but she always went by her full name until quite recently when she started using Cat at school
The little one goes by her full name except at home

I've never heard of Boo as a nickname, is that short for a name? In as far as I know, it has never been a shortened version of anything. It is just a nickname for small people-even when those small people have small people of their own (As in a Boo will be a Boo regardless of age.) As I mentioned before, it may be more regionally known (southern states.) I think it has been co-opted of late by the young people to cover significant others ('He/She is my boo'-lower case-common noun vs. proper noun.) ETA: Think old school-most common well known example would be Boo Radley in 'To Kill A Mockingbird' when his real name was Arthur.

Son usually goes by full name, but often gets called by the standard shortened version. Daughter (Katherine) named herself KK when she was a toddler, and that stuck when she went to preschool. By the 3rd year of preschool, she decided she wanted to be called Kate. Well, there was already a Kate in the class of 12 kids. OK, she said, I'll be Katherine. Oh, there's already a Kathryn in the same class of 12. Fine, I'll stay KK. Then one of the preschool teachers was a mom at the small school she attended for the first few years of elementary, and said mom coached the soccer team that DD was on. And yep, there was a Katherine and a Kat on the team, so KK became her "sports name." She's now in 4th grade, and kind of pushing to be Kat, but I can't ever remember that. I do just call her K sometimes, and she says she kind of likes when I do it but not other people.

We use nicknames a lot!
Camden is Cam, Cam-a-lam, "boy child" or "number one" since he is our first kid and he always picks number one as his uniform number for as long as I can remember.
Phoebe had great nicknames! Phoebs, Sassy, Phoebilicious , Chicken, and "girl child". At school the kids always called her Phoebs or Sassy, and she was Chicken whenever she did sports.

DD has a variety of nicknames that have been given to her by us and others, most notably Sweetpea and Peanut. We use a cute variation of her given name and always have. About half of the time she will use her given name and the other half of the time the variation depending on her mood. I had a couple nicknames growing up that no one uses now but I don't think DH ever had one.

DS is Liam. We call him Scooter a lot. A few years ago we were at the 50s Prime Time Café at Disney World, and our waitress called him that, and it just stuck.
We also call him Saunders... when he was a babe we would call him L - then Ellis (just kind of expanded) - then Ellisaundro - then Saunders. It doesn't even really make sense, now that I type that out!
DD is Mallory and the weirdest we get with her is Mallycakes.

Oldest dd is Boo (from Monsters Inc when I was pregnant), 2nd dd is Pip(squeak) because she snorted and squeaked a lot when she was first born, DS is Sprout and my youngest DS is Smurf, May May or Buddy. Except for May May (my other kids started that one) I am the only one who calls them any of these names and almost never outside of the house.

DH calls me Kiki. I call my brother Bubbs and he calls me sis. We call DH's sister...sister.

I'm in my late 20s and my mom still calls me by a variety of nicknames. I get worried when she uses my real name. Almost all of my family and close friends call me by one of my many nicknames. The only person who consistently uses my given name is my husband.

DD#1 is Shelby and has been Shelbelle since she was a toddler. Lately though, I've been calling her Turtle Shell. She had a spinal fusion and when she lays on her back, she gets stuck like a turtle on it's back. I thought it was cute. Her, not so much My twins are Schmoo and Doodle...together they are Schmoodle My son has always been The Boy or Buddy.

My son has been Boo Boo since birth and I still call him variations of Boo, Boo berry, etc. We also call them each by their first initial.
My youngest was called fuzz for a time. It was a family nickname and he had the fuzziest little head. We even had a song about it that we made up.
I love baby names and little family nicknames. I had one and after my grandparents died it died out too. My mom really didn't use it but my dad did. I miss it a little - probably need to scrapbook about it!
