My oldest I called him Binky (or Bink) until he was probably 7 or 8. I don't know why, it just stuck. I once called him that when he was about 14, on accident, in public. I totally got the WTF! face. lol
My youngest son's name is Tanner. We would call him Tan-Man which transformed into Manny. I still call him Manny once in a while. When I'm talking *about* him, I'll sometimes refer to him as Wonderboy. No idea, he's not a super hero for the most part. lol
The dogs? Well, they answer to many names.

I call my children by their names. I'm not a fan of nicknames. I don't get the point of naming a child one thing and calling them something else. My husband goes by his nickname. The only time he ever uses his given name is for legal purposes. I just don't get it.

Not my kids but my cousins...
I have 3 cousins that are siblings. The oldest (since birth) was nicknamed Pee Wee. He has always been "Pee Wee" - the 2 other siblings do not have a nickname.
To this day, the family still call him Pee Wee (he is 53) and most of his friends call him Pee Wee - he always went by that. The only people that call him by his "real name" is his co-workers.
I didn't even know what his real name was until I was 17 and he graduated from high school and I heard someone ask about Tony and I said "Who is Tony?" and his sister said "Pee Wee" It never even occurred to me that he had a real name - haha!!

Seems that my family is fond of nicknames.
My DD whose name is Natalie is called Noodle
My DS is called bboy (Brian) quite often.
I was called Poopsie by my ex and now the only ones who ever occasionally call me that are one of my sisters and brother. I loved when my FIL would call me Petunia. He was the only one to do that.
My brother has been called Waldo I think since high school (Christopher).
My oldest sister is called Marie (her middle name) but only by her husband and my son. (Gail)
My younger sister is called Mona (Laurie) since school. I think all of my siblings and my kids still call her that in fact I know a couple people who never realized it wasn't her name.

I nickname everyone! I always have. My girls are: Kaylee- KK Kinsie- Nin Clara- either ClaraBelle or punky
I nickname all my coworkers too. Some appropriate, some not! Our CEO is a very conservative super straight laced 60ish year old rich white guy. his hair is the same color as Anderson Cooper. So I started calling him the Silver Fox. Secretly of course!

My girls mostly have nicknames that are variations of their names. At least from me. My LH had several nicknames for all three. My nephew's name morphed into Weed. Lol! Dillon=Dillweed=Weed

My niece started calling my daughter Kiwi. Her name is Kira (I should have spelt it Keira because people pronounce it with the I sound). Most young kids pronounce it Kirwa so the niece did a spin off. And we like to also say Kiwi Bird since she has a fear of birds.

The boy and the girl It started when I got Facebook and we didn't really want to identify them by name etc. So they became the boy and the girl. My husband was "the man" which cracked me up given his job They stuck. Its kind of the family joke now. I have been known to call them collectively as the children of the corn, minions, chicklets. Individually the girl was called pumpkin by her dad early on and they kept it till he died. Somewhere in there it got changed to pumpkin head and occasionally I will toss it her way and it makes her smile. The boy never really had anything other than the boy

Mine have been Sweetpea and Bug since birth and I have multiple nicknames for both of them that I use at home. DH has always just used their given names.
My sisters and I have had nicknames for each other forever, but they are only used by us - not our parents, spouses or friends.

My youngest has a name that was sort of difficult for her and her sister to pronounce, so they had a 'baby'-version of the name for a few years. It's just a mispronounciation, young children trying to say the name correctly, but it's cute.
Now, every time my youngest is sad or need comforting in some way, I call her by her 'baby'-name. My whole family knows about it, but it's mostly me that use it because it's mostly me that's comforting her when she's sad.
My oldest one I call by her name + mine. Like, Sarah-mine. It just fits with her name. It's also mostly used when comforting her.
I guess I only have nicknames for when I need to be the big, comforting mommy, and they just need to be comforted and curl up in my lap and get kisses. I hope they NEVER outgrow this!

My husband and I call our toddler Buttons at home, never in public. It comes from me asking her if she's cute as a button. She always responds 'no' but if you ask her if she's as cute as 2 or 3 or 4 etc buttons, she always responds 'yes' One of our closest friends has called her Fancy Face from day 1 and she often comments about Fancy Face when I post something on Facebook so it's kind of catching on.

my dad called me Princess. I strongly dislike that nickname for anyone. He also called me pumpkin. My daddy called me Punkin. He's been dead for 22 years now. When my now-husband started calling me that one day out of the blue (not knowing the connection), it solidified our relationship in the strangest way. It just had great meaning to me and signified a bond that I treasure.

In the hated word thread, I mentioned that one of my boy's has been nicknamed Boo since birth. (I think that is one of those nicknames that is more common in the south?) Anyway, it got me thinking about nicknames for our kids. My older son doesn't really have one other than adding a 'y' to his name and my younger pretty much came out with the nickname Boo tattooed on his forehead. I am not sure what the difference is-why one got hung with a nickname and one didn't. So what about you? Do your kids have nicknames? Have those names migrated to the outside world (does any one else call them by that name?) Yes My ds does not have a nickname, but his family all still calls him David even though as an adult he goes by Dave. Some habits are just hard to break My 26 yr old dd goes by her nickname about 40% of the time with family. She was a busy body as a toddler and was nicknamed Gladys Kravitz (yes from the TV show Bewitched). She will answer to Gladys For some reason I used to call my youngest Pooter. I have no idea why but it was her nickname from me and I was able to call her that in private up until middle school. My dad gave all of us girls nicknames growing up and our cousins still refer to us as Ding, Critter and Bears.

My middle nephew is named Henry but I tend to call him Henners. It would have been cool if he were a Hank but that didn't make it out of the gate. My nephew Samuel is Sammy, Sam-Sam, Samptster the Hampster, Sam Sam the Monkey Man, etc. I tend to call him Toots. Nobody else does but they know who I'm referring to. It has nothing to do with farts, although he would like that to be the origin. He's 6 so farts are funny. My sister is Kelly Jo but all my life I call her Kay or Jo. No one else does but everyone knows who I'm referring to, and she answers to it. My cat is Gus. I tend to call him Gustave, Pooky, or Bad Kitty. He doesn't answer to anything.

We did have some.
Our oldest is Julia. DH's niece was barely 4 when she was born, and her mom said "it is Julie, with an "ah" at the end of it" and our niece said "Julie-la" - so we called DD La La for years. My brother occasionally still does (and I believe DD has him in her phone as Uncle Spaz LOL)
Middle DD is Hannah. We called her Hannah Bear for the longest time - she used to have this cute little growl when she was a baby.
DS is Jonathan. Jonathan because John was too short. He goes by Johnny in everything in life. I'm one of the only people who still uses his full name. But his nickname? He is Dude. I admit it, I use Dude more than I use anything else. He was at a friend's house, and they were talking about the nicknames his friend & his brother have from their parents. DS commented that his parents didn't give him one, and his friend's Dad said "excuse me? Your mom always calls you Dude!"

They've gone through quite a few nicknames but the one I use for both of them is Brat. I call all their girlfriends Chickie until they marry them. I used to do it because the youngest one dated so many girls I couldn't keep all of their names straight. Now it's a term of endearment.

Other than stinker, little shit (said out of love and laughing), kiddo, we don't have nicknames. DH goes by a shortened version of his name as does my youngest. My oldest doesn't want to go by the usual shortened version of his name. A kid I knew growing up had a nickname of Goober. He hates it now and has told my Mom (who gave him the nickname and babysat him for a long time) if she ever told his wife or kids his childhood nickname, he would make sure her file says to use the largest needle possible and she needs to be woken up every hour and any other annoyance he could think of. He's a RN at the local hospital where she sometimes has to go for treatment and any time she's sick. He wouldn't do that I'm sure. His stepson is currently in my youngest's class so I could pass the name on.... but I won't. ETA - I remembered a friend was called "Tinie" by her younger cousin and a couple girls she baby sat. Her name is Christine. Ex's friend's wife is called Punkie. Another old friend had a nickname of Carebear. Her name was Carrie. I noticed a lot of Carries have that nickname.

We don't use nicknames in the sense of everyday use, where the nickname is a full on swap for the real name. Ours are more like "pet" names, used among family and in more of of lovey way.
Oldest DD (Kyra) is KiKi, KiKi Marie, K, Kee, and generically, Love. KiKi is my fave because it was given to her by a daycare worker when she was about 2 because her name was hard for the other 2-year-olds to pronounce. KiKi made it easier and it stuck.
Youngest DD (Alanna) is 'Lanna, 'LannaBelle, Nahnah, Peanut, and LoveBug. Peanut is the fave in this list because her dad started calling her that when she was small,
My sister refers to them both as Sweetie Pea.

My son has always been J-bay or just J. His name is Jared.
My daughter has always been B or the B. Her name is Lisa but her nickname came about as an evolution. First it was Lisa the Bisa. Then it became Bisa, and finally, "B" if we're talking "to" her and "the B" if we're talking about her.

My ODS was named for his father/grandfather. I didn't want husband and son with the same name, so we came up with initials for my son - first/middle name. He was known by that as a name for school, until high school, which is in a different town. The teachers called him by his given name (from the class list), so all the HS kids called him by that name, and that's what he goes by now. I still can't get used to it.

DS was "Ian Beans" or "Mr. Beans" up until the end of grade school. We don't use those any more. Now I call him "Kid", often when I'm exasperated, or just "I", pronounced like a long e.

My kids have numerous nicknames and they answer to all of them, - pink, blue, boo, bug, Jeep which is itself a nickname of Gracie Pie which became GP which became Jeep, Punky, monkey 1&2, munchkin 1&2, etc. Their friends have different nicknames for them than the ones we use at home. And now that I think about it, all of our pets have nicknames too.

My girls both go by shortened versions of their given names. Youngest DS started calling oldest DS "Bubba" when he was first learning to talk, so he is now Bubba to everybody. I don't really care for nicknames but some just seem to stick tight, don't they?! We call my son-in-law Willbot and I'm not really sure I know why.
Oldest DS is named Christian. He went through a period around 4-5th grade where he really wanted a different name and thought about shortening his. To...Christ. We did finally convince him people would simply not see it as Christ (rhymes with wrist) and would think he meant Christ as in Jesus.

Catching up on this thread and I was reminded of something...
When I was a little baby, my father referred to me as his dollbaby. This lasted until I was probably in early elementary school and I "outgrew" the name.
When my father was dying, I was sitting at his bedside holding his hand. He was on a tremendous amount of pain medications, on hospice in our home. The house was quiet and it was just him and I. He hadn't been awake for days really when he squeezed my hand and in a raspy voice said, "My dollbaby."
It was the very last thing he ever said as he died that evening.
Fast forward 9 years and I'm dating my future husband when he called me "dollbaby." Call me crazy, but to me it was my father telling me that he approved of him. We'll be married 10 years this summer.
