I like the way they LOOK, but don't like the nighttime chiming.

You can turn the chimes off on some of them.

My Dad loves clocks and I grew up with them and didn't notice them at all but friends who came to stay always commented

My MIL has one - it suits her and her house and she always wanted one. I will say that the chiming is soothing and after while you don't notice it - sorta white noise.
The maintenance on them, however, is a whole other story. I would not have the patience to gently wind it, and clean it and really treat it as it needs.

We have one in our formal living room that DH's grandfather made. Occasionally DH winds it up. When he does, I don't really notice the chiming since our bedrooms are upstairs.

I grew up with them and think they are pretty awesome. When my parents lived in the States, my kids loved clock. My mom, who is nearing the end of her life, sent her clock from Holland to my oldest daughter here in the states. Makes me happy that it will give her great memories of "Oma and Opa"

I like the look of them but dislike the heavy tick, tick, tick, especially in a quiet house! I'm also not keen on the nighttime chiming but at least some of that can be silenced!

I don't have one, but I love them. My mom had a cuckoo clock my cousin brought over from Germany. I don't remember it being a problem; I think we just got used to it rather quickly.

I can't stand the noise and chiming all night long (or at any time, really). Years ago dh and I visited his step-grandparents and they gave us their bedroom for the night. This was not a good thing, although it was a beautiful room. They had a grandfather clock in there. I have enough trouble sleeping away from home as it is. Just as soon as I'd drift off, it would chime. It was the worst on the hour. That thing seemed to mock me-- "You're not slee-ping, you're not slee-ping". I don't think that I slept all night.
Dh's mom has several noise-making clocks. One of them is a grandfather clock. Keeping them wound and operating has been a project for my dh. Since her husband passed away it has been important to her to keep them going. It has been somewhat problematic for various reasons.
In general, I don't care for them at all. Years from now it'll be interesting to see what dh wants to do with that clock when MIL is gone. It doesn't really fit with our decor and we don't have the room for it, but I suppose I could deal (the truth is I will probably have little choice in the matter) but I will insist that we not keep it wound and functioning.

I like them too. We have Dh's grandfathers. It has a glass cabinet with a light underneath.

This is my nightmare (and one of my neighbor's houses - it's okay to post these because (a) he doesn't live there anymore and (b) he's an asshole who lets his dog poop in everyone's yard and doesn't clean it up) This barely scratches the surface of what he had in his house. Every single room was like this and the entire garage was lined with grandfather and cuckoo clocks too. Can you imagine what that house was like every hour?

We have one, and I really like it. It's beautiful, and I love the chimes. We can adjust the chimes so that we don't get 12 of them at midnight (or we don't get any chiming at all), but I really don't mind the nighttime chiming.

I can't stand any clocks.
The sound of a second hand is enough to make me lose my mind.
I can't even wear a watch bc the sound of the second hand is too much.
My MIL has a big clock on her wall. I would end up in tears every time we had to go to her house bc the sound of the second hand is literally physically painful migraine inducing to me. I didn't want to say anything bc I didn't want to be rude. Finally my DH told her what was going on and now she has him stop the clock when I come over and he starts it again when we leave.
All that to say no way in hell could I handle a grandfather clock.

Nay - they are not at all my style. To me they just seem really old-fashioned.

I have one, it's actually a "granddaughter's clock"....smaller than a grandfather's clock. When my Grandma passed away 15 years ago...I got that one and my sister got the taller grandfather's clock. She keeps her's running and chiming....I don't. I don't have time to pay attention to it.

I'd love to have one. I really, really want a cuckoo clock. My grandparents had one and my sisters and I would run to the living room to see the little bird pop out. In general, I don't like the ticking of clocks though. I suppose there's something about certain types that bothers me less.

I love them... When repurposed, lol. I found an old one for sale that didn't work anymore, I tore out the clock and will be chalk painting and adding shelves to make it a cute bookshelf. You can find examples on Pinterest.

I grew up with a ticking chiming clock. It was not a grandfather clock, but a very old wall clock. My father loved that clock and always wound and made sure it was synced time to chimes.
Weird thing, when my father died (suddenly) the clock stopped working. I brought it for service but it has never worked.
I still have it and when it is really quite I hear it ticking, but it has not in sixteen years. I will try again to get it repaired. I really miss the ticking and the chime sounds, it reminds me of home.

I like them but don't have room for one. A few years ago, my mum gave me a chiming mantle clock that she had grown up with in the 30s. I remember it from my own childhood. It had stopped working, but an acquaintance repairs old clocks and he worked on it. Hearing it chime in my own house is wonderful, and very nostalgic!

Normally I say sure, why not!
As I sit here typing this reply my 19 month toddler is pounding on our GFC. His twin is soon to join in. In this case I'm thinking.....get that thing out of the house.

I like them, but don't have one. Nor do I have any place in my house to accommodate one. I'm dying to have a cuckoo clock, though. For several years, DH spent a lot of time working in Germany but we never had the extra funds to buy one. One of these days!

My dad got one for my mom for their 40th wedding anniversary. Someday the clock will come to me, I actually helped my dad select it. It's a daily reminder of my dad's love for my mom. And someday it will go to my daughter to be in her home. I love ours

My mom and dad have one. It was mom's dad's that she inherited. I like it, but don't think I would have one in my house unless it was a family piece that had been around for years. Unfortunately, I didn't like the man, so I won't be bringing it into my house in the future.
