For driving in the left lane on the freeway. Apparently there is a new law in Michigan. Stay right unless you are passing. The cop asked me how my driving record was and I told him that it was excellent. He checked it out and came back to my car and said "you do have an excellent record. Here's your ticket. Fucker!!! BUT. He said that I won't have any points and it wouldn't even go to the DMV. "Just call the number at the bottom of the ticket and pay the fine". He couldn't even tell me how much the fine was so I have to call tomorrow to see how much this is going to effing cost me.
WTF kind of law is this? I am so pissed. Really. You have nothing better to do. I was 2 hours from home and the rest of the way home I can't tell you how many people were driving in the left lane for miles and miles. Or how many people were swerving into my lane while looking at their phones.
What a stupid ticket to get to ruin my perfect record.

I like this law, however, if you weren't blocking traffic, I think he's an ass for giving it to you. You're right, too, that if they only targeted people texting, they'd have a fortune at the end of the day.
I'm really sorry you got this ticket. I have to do a lot of driving over the summer and there is nothing I hate more than someone driving in the left lane the same speed as the car in the right lane. For miles and miles. But those are who should get the tickets, not when there's nobody around.
Sorry!

I am sorry. I live in an area that has multi-lane freeways, and anyone and everyone drives in the left lane. I would be in trouble in an area with only two lanes in one direction because I wouldn't even think about not driving in the left lane (unless there was a car behind me).

That sucks. We've had that law in WA a long time and seems like no one abides by it. Every once in awhile they will do "emphasis patrols" and sometimes it's on left lane drivers. I like the law but when people don't follow it, it's frustrating. People will sit over there and do the exact speed limit (or less) and won't move over. It can create traffic problems. Since it's new to your state it would have been nice to just give a warning until people start knowing about it more though.

So the left lane in your state is for passing only? What a waste of a lane! In our state, that's the fast lane and slower moving traffic needs to move to the right, but you can still drive in the lane.

I don't like driving in the right lane on our highway because there are so many on and off ramps and people can't figure out how to merge on or get off. I would be in big trouble!
OP, can you go to court over the ticket? My sister got her first ticket and she went to court, the officer didn't show up, the judge saw her record and dismissed it if she didn't get another ticket in the next six months.

Wish we had the law. DH drives in the left lane because he is going five over limit. Ticks me off, because I get the glares from people passing on the right. Not that I am perfect, but I stay in the right unless I am passing. Only time I stay in left is the two miles before I turn on my road. It is a 65 limit, and I need to turn left. Sometimes if I don't get over right away, I don't get the chance.

Out on the multi-laned highways here, there are signs posted that the left lane is for passing only. Never heard of someone getting a ticket for driving there.

So Sorry, bummer on your driving record but That is pretty impressive. I sadly lost that status years and years ago.
My state has had that law for a long time and there is signage posted periodically on the interstate and on the on ramps about it. usually left is the passing lane, although we do have some places that it is used for through traffic. However I will say that I have never known anyone that has gotten a ticket for it. I think it is to deter people from creating a bottleneck.

That is the law in my state also, but I don't think it's ever enforced. They would make a lot of money off my husband. I hate passing people because if I don't pass in a few seconds, someone is tailgating me. I won't drive 90 just to pass someone, so I just stay in the right lane. But there is a highway near us that has terrible potholes in the right lane. Not a busy highway. I drive for 2 miles in the left lane because the potholes will really mess up my car (at least it seems like it!).

I have yet to live in a state where the law isn't that slow traffic stays to the right and the left lane is for passing. It can get very frustrating when some drivers don't get over and let faster traffic through. Although it doesn't sound like the case here, I assure you that the law serves a vital purpose, especially when traffic flow is high.
DH has lived in states where it's illegal to pass on the right which strikes me as strange because then you have no way to get around the person who isn't getting over.
How well was the new law publicized? That seems like the kind the news should be blasting when it changed because it effects so many people. Perhaps they dropped the ball.
As for the cop, he sounds like a jerk. But he could've been the nicest guy around and I'd still think he was a jerk if my excellent record took a hit.
I hope your fine isn't too bad.
And now you're gonna be paranoid every time you drive down the left lane, which sucks.

To answer the bolded question, a quick search brings up multiple news stories about this law and the campaign to educate drivers. They are blasting the news with stories like this. It is a stupid ticket to ruin your perfect record with OP, but I can understand a LEO's frustration if they are blasting the news and someone drives by blatantly ignoring the law. Just like we all get away with speeding everyday, but if you do it in front of a state patrol you will get pulled over and ticketed no matter how clean your record is. Other people ignoring laws and not getting caught doesn't make what you did right and there really isn't anything for you to fight the ticket. Hopefully it isn't a really expensive lesson.

This driver is a big reason many states are moving to the left lane for passing only laws.

Seriously? I live in Michigan and this is the first I've heard of this law. I would think there would be more important things for Michigan police to do than pulling over left-lane drivers who aren't actually blocking traffic.

While I'm sorry you received a ticket, I love this law. I detest the vigilante speed enforcers who drive in the fast lane at exactly the speed of the car next to them so people can't pass. It's not your job to slow traffic down, move over.

I'm sorry you were busted but I am so very pleased that the law is being enforced!! I think you are a poor driver if you drive in the left lane. My father was an over the road trucker who burned it in my head the left lane was for passing. There is greater danger passing a truck on the right due to blind spots. Remember when some cars weren't made with mirrors on the right? How can you be sure you are clear to the right. The left lane is for faster moving traffic. Pass on the left. Get out of the fast lane. I also lived in Germany for 8 years where this is a strictly enforced and in the most German sense of the way strictly obeyed. They have no problem ticketing you or flashing you until you get over.
My commute recently tripled so I'm a bit sensitive to people disobeying this law. It impedes the flow of traffic and honestly, my favorite it the person going 10 MPH below the limit just parked in the left lane. I'm so very happy you have your shit together and don't need to get to work on time or you gave yourself enough time to drive 10MPH slower. You have no idea really when you will block traffic so why do it?

This law would make my commute heaven. It's always one jackass (not saying you were doing that OP) that has to play speed police. Pass and move to the right. Staying out of the left lane sounds heavenly!

Michigan State Police are just enforcing it lately. Staying right except to pass has been a law here for years but people have ignored it. Sorry you got a ticket but glad to hear they are finally going to enforce it. I hate having to pass on the right because some fool in the left lane is going 5 under the speed limit and refuses to move to the right lane. BTW, your insurance company will get notification of the ticket even if there are no points involved. Seems that that is the latest move of the insurance companies here in MI to soak us for even more money. Seems the sky high rates of being a no-fault state are just not enough anymore.

We have that law as well, and it's a tricky one. I see the point of it, BUT, on highways with a lot of exit/entrance ramps, staying in the right lane when there are only 2 to choose from can be aggravating. You're constantly having to change your speeds and to be aware of entering vehicles who don't bother with the whole yielding concept.
We have some highways that have 3 lanes to each side, but most around here are either only 2 per side, or if they have 3, the 3rd lane comes and goes so often that it's almost silly to use it, because you're constantly having to merge every time the road goes back to 2 lanes.
I'm sorry he ticketed you. It seems to me that your situation was a good opportunity to give a simple warning.

I knew nothing of this law. The only one I heard on the radio is to move to the left lane if a cop pulls someone over and is on the right shoulder. The asshat could have let me off with a warning. Especially considering my record. Nice way to make money for your county. The ticket was for impeding traffic and improper lane usage. My cruise control was set at 76. So I wasn't impeding traffic. The cop was on a motorcycle and it didn't look like a cop cycle. He asked me why I didn't notice him following me. I told him I thought it was just some motorcycle driving behind me. WTF.

We've had this law for a long time and my dh was ticketed for it probably 10 years ago. He was riding with 3 other guys so he was convinced that the cop used that to pull him over to get a look inside the car.

Tin cin...he said it won't go to the Secretary of State so my insurance had better not get notified. I will really be pissed. $&!(:.!&!!! Cindy It's funny because a friend of mine just told me this last night. Seems he got a no point ticket but his insurance jumped up. When he called his agent, the agent told him that they now learn of every ticket, whether it has points or not. That is why his insurance increased. That is crazy I know. Another friend who was also in the conversation said she got a speeding ticket and when she went to court to fight it they pulled a whole group of them aside and told them that since all of them had no record of a ticket in the past 10 years that if they wanted to pay a $150 fine, they would dismiss the ticket. She did, they did, and her insurance never jumped. Seems like a big money making scam for that particular area if you ask me but like she said, it was going to cost her either way but by only paying the fine and getting the ticket dismissed, she wouldn't be paying on it for years via a high insurance rate. Hope your ticket is like that too but I am thinking not.

I love this law...just wish more people followed it.
There's nothing more frustrating than being stuck behind a left lane driver who is pacing the right lane, not allowing left lane travelers past because they think they're going fast enough.
I travel at about 80mph and I utilize the right lane immediately after I make my passes... I think it's rude to perpetually travel in the passing lane. No matter how fast you think you're going, there's always someone in more of a hurry than you.

Yeah, I don't think it's a new law, just newly enforced. I'm not even sure it's statewide. I read a few weeks ago that they were focusing on the west side of MI. Where were you?
I agree with it but yet it's really hard when you do like I do and drive a two lane freeway everyday. I drive 23 to Ann Arbor and it's two lanes all the way. You either have to be in the right lane where people drive really slow and you have to deal with merging traffic. Or be in the left lane and either passing all the time (which is easy enough often as the traffic is so heavy) or moving between lanes. Really I love it when I drive 96 or 75 on the weekends sometimes and have a middle lane to drive in. The really slow people can have the right lane and the people driving crazy and going 90mph can have the left lane.

This driver is a big reason many states are moving to the left lane for passing only laws. But by making that lane a passing lane only, doesn't that make the traffic situation worse? Here, you are required to yield right to faster traffic. Our traffic congestion is so bad that if that lane was closed off as a driving lane, we'd be screwed.

This whole concept amuses me. If there is only one lane in either direction, then of course you have to pass on the left. But on a 2-4-6 lane in each direction interstate? See a gap? That's where you pass. Interesting how things are done differently in different places. OP I agree you should have just had a warning.
