When I was in Portland visiting my brothers, my SIL introduced me to Dang toasted coconut chips. I love those things! Sadly, they are not sold here. I did find a few tutorials/recipes for making your own and they sound easy, but I am wondering if that is really the case or if it is more tricky than it seems. I am about to place an order on Amazon and was thinking about adding on a bag of the coconut chips but they are quite expensive there. If I can make my own inexpensively I will go that route, but if making them on my own is going to be a PITA, then I will order some. Any experiences to share?

If it's anything like toasting shredded coconut, don't rush it. It goes from toasted to burnt in a matter of seconds, especially if you have the heat too high.

Trader Joes used to have some or Costco. Costco in Maple Grove usually has them.
DH got a whole coconut and used a peeler to create big strips and toasted it. I'd try the non sweetened raw coconut as it's usually flaked larger, not shredded.

I toast shredded coconut for muesli but hadn't heard of the 'chips'. I just wouldn't bother smashing up a coconut etc but here's what Martha says. You have to watch them like a hawk though Or as shevy says, you can get the unsweetened flaked coconut. I see Amazon has some of that too.
