And even the kids think they can disrespect you--you tell them no and they go anyway!!!

Hmmm, not sure why this bounced back to the top. But update in OP anyway.

great update! Sorry, I didn't realize this was old. Luckily it's not terribly old!

It is a big teacher faux pas to tell students that they can skip (or be late to) another teacher's class - no matter what. Also, it is equally wrong to tell student to ask you if it is ok for them to leave. It sends the message that your class time is ok to miss. It is compounded if the other teacher tells students to ask you and does not even get off their duff to email you or call you. As a math teacher, I can tell you there is nothing more irritating that a student approaching you at the beginning of the period saying "What are we doing today, Mrs. So and so said if it was ok with you I can go to her class." or "Mr. So and so said I could help make posters for the assembly, if it is ok with you." - making you the bad guy if you say no.
If this new teacher really needs this explained to her, it does not bode well for her future in teaching. At our school, our admins have to send out an email in spring reminding bozo teachers not to do this (as if anyone should have to tell them). Just last night I had to email a teacher who has two boys in my 4th period precalc class in her 3rd period physics. At least twice a week they have been arriving with a pass from her because the needed to "finish an assignment" or "finish a test". I can see a once in rare emergency but if you have students that need extra time on assignments or tests, they need to make other arrangements than being late to their next class.almost never let kids do that unless it is just once and they have like one to three more minutes left on a test. These guys were routinely coming in 10-30 minutes late.
Here is the email I wrote yesterday: "I have two 4th period students that have physics in 3rd period who have been late repeatedly. (xxxx and xxxx). Would you please remind them that if they need extra time for physics class they should make alternate arrangements that do not involve missing part of their 4th period. When they miss the first part of class they miss a crucial piece of instruction. In addition it disrupts the lesson when they both walk in late. I don't think they realize that and have been claiming to stay past the bell in your class and I would guess it has happened 10 or more times or more in the past month." and her response: Hi,
I will tell them. I didn’t hold them to do something. I always tell my students come afterschool finish if you didn’t finish lab or have a question.
Thank you let me know, "
Odd, since they show up with passes that she signed every time.
Thanks

What kind of school do you work for?
Some of the things you have posted are...um...interesting, to say the least.

What kind of school do you work for? Some of the things you have posted are...um...interesting, to say the least. It's a huge urban public middle school with a strong performing and visual arts magnet program. Interesting doesn't even begin to describe it. My kids attend/have attended this school! From the outside, as a parent, it's been great for them overall. From the inside ... it's the loony bin. I have applications in for positions in the two suburbs closest to my side of town, and also for a couple of private schools and for a non-teaching (but education-related) job with the local opera company. But competition for these jobs will be extremely fierce, so who knows. I'm also lobbying hard for a better schedule next year (instead of having only the low-performing choirs) and to make sure no kids are placed in choir who don't want to be there.

I'm glad you talked to her again and resolved this without having to go higher up. It sounds like she is new and a little naive, but learning.

Good luck with your search! Our band director just announced yesterday that they don't have the budget to pay for the assistant band director through the end of the year. I find it so sad that a fine arts magnet can't fund their magnet program! To say, I'm disappointed is an understatement. Being in band has really been the best thing for my son. He is motivated and actually interested in something besides Xbox and I owe it to both teachers. I am aware of budget challenges in our district, but to not be able to pay for one more month just blows my mind. No wonder our good teachers are fleeing to the 'burbs DS will be moving on to HS, but I hope they figure out a way to bring back the AD.
