David Hasselhoff has filed to get his $21,000 monthly alimony payment to his ex cancelled, claiming he has only $600 in the bank and can't live off his monthly income if he has to support her. According to this artcle, based on his court filing, his monthly income averages $112,000 and his outgoing expenses are $72,000 which leaves $40,000. It isn't clear if the alimony is included in his monthly expenses, so let's take it out and, in a worst case scenario, he is left with $19,000. Am I wrong in hoping the judge denies his petition?

it's really hard for me to have sympathy for anyone who can't get by on $19k a month. lots of people don't make that a YEAR and he's crying about a month.

I suppose it depends on what a person's reality is.
I don't understand the need for multiple clothes of similar items or multiple #of shoes when it is hard to pay the rent or groceries.

Actually, if his monthly expenses are $72,000 per month, the $19,000 is just his pocket money. Nope, no sympathy here either.

Don't forget that $19k is after expenses. So $19k for food, clothing, play money. yeah. I don't feel sorry for him either.

Not being able to live off of $19,000 does seem a little out of touch with reality.
But I have question and I am sincere.
What is alimony awarded for? Of all the people that I know who are divorced including me no one gets alimony. It was never discussed by the lawyers.

The older I get the more I believe in alimony. I know two women that got it, one still does.

I think he only had two exes, a miniscule amount by Hollywood standards! This one is Pamela Bach, his most recent ex. They were married for like 15 years.
I think spousal support is pretty common, especially among the rich. Although, come to think if it, isnt it usually just a lump sum settlement? But shouldn't there be an end to it at some point? I get having it as a temporary thing but she's been receiving it for like 10 years. She should be supporting herself now. And even though $19000 ( or whatever it is he has left each month) is a lot and he should be able to survive just fine on that, it is his money and I understand him not wanting to part with it anymore. Heck, the kids are grown and they've been divorced for a decade now.

I am going to guess that his $19k is going toward debt. I wonder if the outgo includes that? I know for some documents, when you list expenses, it doesn't go on the list if it isn't house/utilities/taxes,

When the news first came out, he said he wanted to retire but could not afford to if he still had to pay her alimony. He has been paying alimony for 10 years. She is an actor and owns her own production company. I'm not a Hoff fan, but if there aren't any minor children, when should she become fiscally responsible for herself? He also might want more money for his new 33 year old fiancé.

Yeah, while I can laugh at the fact that he's not able to live off of $19,000 a month, I do question an ex having to support their ex so lavishly and especially if they aren't having to take care of the kids anymore.

Yeah, while I can laugh at the fact that he's not able to live off of $19,000 a month, I do question an ex having to support their ex so lavishly and especially if they aren't having to take care of the kids anymore. I think it depends on the agreement. My dh and I agreed I would stay home and care for the kids while he grew in his career. He has indeed, and I will never come remotely close to his salary, even if I work well past retirement age and with my education. So lets say in smaller numbers (made up here for ease of discussion) that he made 200,000 a year as a result of all the support he had at home while I was home raising our kids. Then I go back to work and while I can support myself I only make 50000 a year. Now I can live on 50K, a lot of people do. But after 20 years of marriage, should I have to go back to living in a much smaller home, unable to take vacations, etc. while he now supports only himself on that 200K? We were partners in the decision and in the growth of that career, so do I really not deserve some part of that salary if he divorces me? I can see both sides of this argument, but if the agreement was made together (and usually they make this stuff go into their prenups I think), then she should get the money. I don't know how long that should last post-divorce, but if she put her career on hold in any capacity in order for him to build his, maybe that's not such a bad thing that he shares in that wealth. Maybe if she gave it up for 15 years, she should get 15 years in alimony. But the reality is that she has a lot of lost time she can never get back in terms of work growth and earning potential. It doesn't matter if it's 1 million or 100000, it's still about the lifestyle and the agreement.

Well, I for one don't see how a man like David Hasselhoff can be expected to live in a paltry $19,000 a month especially if we expect to see him wearing live puppies regularly. I mean, HE'S A LIVING CONTRIBUTION TO THE WORLD!!!!1!!

Of all the people that I know who are divorced including me no one gets alimony. It was never discussed by the lawyers. From what little I know, alimony is paid to the (typically) woman in cases where she may be a SAHM or earning well below him. It is often for half the length of the marriage if over 10 years and meant to give her time to get back on her feet, etc. It is often stopped if she remarries. (Traditionally), it is often the woman who gives up career opportunities to provide for the children so this is a way to help her while she gets current. Yes, there is a very old fashioned view of it so I could be way off current times. Just a bit of info. from what I know or hear.
