DD is driving to school now in our old minivan. Did great the first time, but the second time she neglected to turn the headlights off. Dead battery. DH tried to jump it, but he couldn't get it to turn over.
So this morning I stopped off and asked our regular mechanic about it, and he said he'd be able to run over to the school lot this afternoon to see what he could do. Well, he got it running, and brought it back over to his garage. That means there were at least 2 people involved because one of them had to drive each vehicle (theirs and mine.)
He's not charging me! Yes, we're regular customers, and yes we recommend him out, but come on! You can't run a business by giving it away!
Anyway, I need to say thank you to this very nice man. This isn't the first time he's helped us out and not charged us, but this was definitely more of an inconvenience to him than the other times.
He's a big guy with two big slobbery dogs, and his kids are grown. That's all I know about him.
Ideas?

my hubby was a mechanic and he'd say a gift card too. Favorite local restaurant or Starbucks if you know he's a fan.

My ex is a mechanic. If he works for a shop, showing up with a box of donuts is always a good way to thank them. I've done that a few times. They don't last long. But we have a really awesome donut shop in our town.

I have a mechanic (and 2 partners that I don't know that well) that I love and he has always taken great care of our cars, long before I married my husband. I have dropped off donuts & coffee before, pizza another time and I make them baked treats every Christmas (which I have seen them eat). My mom lives in a small town and her mechanic will even come pick up her car, service it and return it. Great service! She is always treating him in some way. I think she has even given him a gift card to the local ice cream shop before! I think any acknowledgement that you appreciate them going out of their way would be a nice gesture.

We have one restaurant in town, but it's a pretty good one. I called up and they do have gift cards.
I like the coffee and donuts idea a lot too.
Any more ideas ?

Perhaps a gift card for the local pet store or wherever you think he might buy the dogs' food (you took good care of my baby, here's something to help take care of yours!). Or even just an Amazon card.

I knew my mechanic very well, so it may be different for you, but I always bought him some steaks and a case of beer!

Perhaps a gift card for the local pet store or wherever you think he might buy the dogs' food (you took good care of my baby, here's something to help take care of yours!). Or even just an Amazon card. This is what I was going to suggest. There's also some monthly subscription boxes like those cosmetics ones, but for dogs. I also like Berty's idea of the steaks and beer. Send his a box of steaks from Omaha steaks if you don't have a good local butcher. --I don't know if you have a Trader Joe's, but I just got their most recent store mailer "catalogue". They have Prime Choice Black Angus Ribeyes for $13 lb. Choice is restaurant quality--the best quality not usually sold in grocery stores. COSTCO also sells Choice steaks. --You could buy a whole tenderloin or ribeye. I think ribeyes are more of a "manly" steak--more marbling, grills better unless you like really rare steaks because it's tough to grill a tenderloin and get it cooked on the inside without having to butterfly it. My dh just got a couple of T bones from our Harris Teeter. Cook's Illustrated just came out with a special publication on cooking meat. They had a new way of cooking thick steaks--cooking in the oven until the steak is almost cooked to the desired doneness and then finishing it off in a cast iron skillet or the grill to get a good sear on the outside. You could gift him this magazine with the steaks. Cook's Illustrated Meat (The French edition is also really great!)

My mechanic is my boss's brother in law. He always gives me such a good deal. I've had pizza delivered a couple times. When he went over the car we just bought for ODS and didn't charge us, I stopped in the next day and handed him one of those giant boxes of Snickers bars from Sam's. He was so dang happy. I knew that he has one almost every afternoon with his coffee.

My first thought was a gas card. DD's BF is a mechanic and I think he spends every available cent on something else for his car, so not having to pay for gas would free up more cents for that stuff.

I think any acknowledgement that you appreciate them going out of their way would be a nice gesture. I totally agree! I also think it would be good to remember him around the holidays with a card with cash/check in it.

Food. They guys at DH's shop eat like crazy.
If it is summer, the shops are usually not air conditioned, so anything cool is welcomed. A big jug of iced tea along with homemade chex mix to snack on. Winter or cool days, a vat of coffee plus donuts.
I often send brownies or cookies that I have whipped up from a box mix.
Because they are DH's employees, but they also work on my car, I will once in awhile send a casserole... some kind of meal. The owner's wife will make them chicken salad sandwiches. It is amazing how poorly they eat otherwise. They are half a block from a Jack in the Box and a Chick Fil A so they eat a lot of fast food normally. They love home cooked meals!
