The new Kmart commercial grates my nerves. Yet another example of the deterioration of our society. As a teacher of elementary age students, I don't allow them to speak 'street slang' while at school. I also encourage yes over yeah explaining there is a time and place but school isn't it..ie formal vs informal settings. I am sure I am unintentionally opening a can of worms but ughh that commercial. eta: the link. m.youtube.com/watch?v=NRaoFivQYSk

I haven't seen it yet. Is it just the language of the commercial that bothers you?

I haven't seen it, and probably won't. We don't see most US commercials here.
I generally agree with avoiding phrases/items that dumb down people and are negative about learning or being polite. I won't let my children wear shirts that say stuff like "homework sucks" or other negative phrases like that, or that condone a bratty attitude of any type.

Link please?
I think it should be a rule that when people talk about commercials they should provide a link. Some days I'll go search for it, but if you (anyone bringing it up) want to have a discussion about a commercial, it would be most helpful to have a link.

i think it is cute! I love how they made all of the statements positive! Plus, it is kids on a playground, not sitting in their class with their teacher having a discussion.

I can not stand those stupid commercials. The Christmas one with dudes in boxers was funny. The yo mama one? Not even close.
But its kids, on the playground. So um yea a prude lol
My dh (high school teacher at low income inner city school in welfare capitol of Cali amd the US) does not allow that talk in class. In the hall, as long as a kid doesnt cuss he let's it slide.

I'm not offended, but I don't find it funny like "Ship my pants." I would ff through the Yo mamma commercial.

Not my favorite commercial, some what annoying. But they aren't in the classroom, they're on the playground. So, yeah, kids are going to use slang with each other. (Although, isn't "Yo Mama" kind of 90's???)

Well, I must be a prude also! I can't stand any of the new Kmart commercials. It really makes me sick to see "kids with attitudes" being promoted as funny. I don't find it funny at all - just really annoying.

Yo mama was brought back in late 2000's via a show on MTV called Yo Mama (dude that voiced Handy Manny was the host)

Yes you are being a prude. There is nothing wrong with that commercial and kids are going to use slang on the playground. Just not even a blip on my radar.

I'm not fond of AX instead of ASK, but other than that, I found it cute.

I remember your momma jokes when I was a kid. No problem with the commercial here.

Wow. That felt really forced. And I think I'm losing my hearing because I couldn't understand half of what they said.

I think my tolerance level for commercials is getting lower and lower. I can't say that I like many of them. Thank goodness for fast forward and the mute button. They both get a workout here.
I don't like this one because it sounded forced too. Just "eh".

Completely forced and fake. The concept is cute but the kid actors are annoying, trying too hard. And yeah, I had to listen hard to understand them.

I thought it was cute and funny.
That kind of talk used to grate on me, too. Both the culture and the accent were foreign to me. After living here for 20+ years, I don't hear it as odd or grating in the same way.
My kids (native New Yorkers, all) didn't get it the first time around - they expected insults, so they "heard" insults. When I pointed out that they were all compliments, they had to listen again.

They are saying positive things, but then the kids all groan as though it were negative. Makes no sense.

The problem is, that there is no way I would let my kids speak that way. I guess I am a prude. My son tries to say" that's doe" (pronounced like that. ) I about want to throw him against a wall and scream "what? Who taught you that? Not in this house."
Slang is okay but at least I should understand the content.

I couldn't really understand what they were saying either. but, I don't get how this can make you a "prude".... I guess I think of "prude" differently.
