...the book ends?
Some books are so real to me that I want to know what happens next for the characters. Or what they're doing in the future.

YES! I make stuff up in my head to continue their lives. Usually I insert myself as a love interest if there's a handsome man involved in the book.

ALL THE TIME! I do it when TV shows are cancelled and at the end of movies, too.
Don't even get me started on all the ways The Way We Were have continued on in my head!

Yes, I really want to know how Holden is doing.
I also really want to know what happened to Scout, Atticus, Jem & Boo 20 years later after the book is over.

All the time, but only for a few days. I rarely think about it once I start another good book.

I always wonder that and most of the time I wish authors would write sequels. I think that is why a lot of the YA dystopian fiction appeals to me because the vast majority of those books are made into a least three book series. I feel like I get a chance to really know and love the characters.

Yes and I blame it on the series books I read as a child such as Nancy Drew and The Hapypy Hollisters. Now I still prefer to read books that have that formula. I hate to say good-bye to the characters at the end of the book.

I wonder this too, especially at the end of a TV series or book, not so much with movies though. But the advantage to not to having closure is that I can give the characters the ending I want them to have.
I read once that Daphne duMaurier (sp?), although hounded for years to do it, would never write a sequel to 'Rebecca' because she wanted the readers to draw their own conclusion as to what happened to Maxim and his wife, and Mrs Danvers. I guess other authors feel the same - there's nothing like a good Hitchcock ending - leave 'em guessing.

All the time. If it's a book I loved, I want the characters to go on living. That's one of the best parts of Anne of Green Gables. You see nearly her whole life and it's lovely to live it with her.

I always picture them sitting and waiting in a big white void, like a blank book page.

All the time. When I was a kid I had elaborate fantasies about books and TV shows inserting myself in as a character. Still think about it now but without the elaboration.

All the time. Or, if I wasn't satisfied with the ending, then I change it in my mind.

I guess other authors feel the same - there's nothing like a good Hitchcock ending - leave 'em guessing. I actually read a couple of 'sequels' to Rebecca- one of my favorite books ever. One was quite well done and the other was not. In hindsight, however, I regret reading both of them. Sometimes you just have to leave well enough alone and be satisfied with the author's direction for his/her characters.

All the time, but only for a few days. I rarely think about it once I start another good book. This exactly. If they make a sequel to anything I've read in the past, I will definitely read it though. Sort of like Sycamore Row.

Always. I really appreciate JK Rowlings tidbits about the HP characters that she has told us over the years.

That's why I love books in series I do think about the characters after I'm finished with a book. Not all the time, but I never completely let go of a good book either. That's why I hate it when my favorite characters are given an ending I don't feel they deserve. I can imagine their ongoing lives, but I've never been able to re-write a death in my mind. I'm OK with deaths in books, but it has to be well written and with a purpose. I'm still mourning a certain one-sentence death in a popular YAF-series

I totally agree Jili. I also read one written by one of Daphne's descendants, a granddaughter or niece? I was so sorry I did. If Daphne had wanted us to know more, she'd have written it herself.

Yes! Good characters are like good friends and I want to "keep up with them" long after I finished the book.

Yep. To me it is a sign of truly great book. That is exactly what I was going to say... I know there have been books over the years that slip right out of my mind the moment I close them. But the good books? The ones that play like movies in your mind while you read them? I wonder, I create futures, I imagine...

Yes! Anytime I really enjoy the characters in a book, I wonder what happens next!
Did you read Fault in Our Stars? That curiosity is part of the story line. I loved that!

That's one thing I love about Karen Kingsbury's Baxter Family series. It started out with a series of 4 books and then morphed into 24. The later books would focus on new characters but they were connected to the old favorite characters, who would either make cameos or jump right back into the story.

Sometimes it's better not to know...I didn't like the later Anne stories so much. And Rebecca is one of my favourite books of all time. Maybe there is some link here, perhaps I like stories where I can make up my own sequels? I love it when a book has that much of a 'grip' on me!

Yes. There are a couple of mystery series that I read - the authors passed away and I felt so sad that I wouldn't know what happens next in the character's lives.
