I haven't used mine in a long while so please remind me which types of ink pads should be stored upside down? What about distressed ink pads?

I don't store any of my ink pads upside down. And I still have some from SU! from the early 90's that work fine. If you look at craft rooms or ink storage on Pinterest, Google or peoples blogs, very few store theirs upside down. JenMcG stores some of hers on their end in a drawer. Here is a link to her storage video JMcG Ink Storage videoThe only ones I have that are "upside down" are the ones from CTMH that have the stupid twisty turn around lid that the ink pad is on. I hate those things and never use them because I get all inky trying to open them.

It used to be said dye inks should be stored upsidedown to keep the ink at the top, but I haven't done that in ages and my inkpads are fine.

I use a napa valley box and they are stored not upside down and never had a problem. now I need to open my older SU stamp pads that are still wrapped in shrink wrap and see if they still are good though.

I have some memories ink pads (dye ink) they were the manufacturer of hero arts inks and I stored some on their side or they got that way and they leaked. I have started labeling my ink pads with a label maker though. I'm finding this is helping.

The CTMH and SU pads are currently designed so that if you store them with the label looking like it's right-side up, the ink pad is actually upside down on the inside.

All mine are upside down, some of them are 15+ years old and still usable! Same for me. Because I have done it that way for so long and they are labeled that way, they stay that way. Everything works great for me.
