Does your PUBLIC school have prayers at public school events?
Graduation? Football games? PTA meetings? Honors Society Induction? Etc?
Also, where do you live? I'm just wondering how it compares in different parts of the country?

I'm in Texas and our public schools have prayer at all of those events.
It really bothers me because I think it's inappropriate.

always - it's legal if it's student led and non-mandatory but it still bothers me...probably because the style of prayer(Baptist/Non-demon Christian) is very different from my norm as a Catholic and because that makes me aware that it's probably even MORE uncomfortable for the non-Christians
Florida
growing up in England - there was always Anglican prayer at school, teacher or minister led but that's the State religion there so understandable. Once I moved to New England - there was never prayer at public school

Nope, I live in colorado
We just attended a graduation in florida and they started with a prayer that was definitely Christian (not non denominational) and ds looked at me confused. I simply answered that it is the south

I will say sometimes. Not specifically school related (beyond the baccalaureate) but at things like team dinners that the teams are from the school, but the dinner isn't a school function.
Other than that though, none that I can remember.
I'm in Florida.

In the county where I live, the high schools do offer baccalaureate services. There are some clubs that have religious/spiritual association that sponsor events that include prayer - i.e. Fellowship of Christian Athletes organizes the annual prayer around the flagpole event. I've never heard a prayer said at any other official school event - athletics, inductions, honor's nights PTA meetings, etc.
(ETA: I haven't been to a graduation so can't really be sure what happens there...)
That being said, another county in my state did make the news a few years ago over players gathering on the field for prayer just prior to football games.
I live in the south.

Here there is a preacher led prayer over the announcing system at the stadium before every high school football game.
I do not recall a non-Christian religious leader ever being invited to do the prayer.
Jesus Christ is almost always specifically mentioned by name.
The drill team (dance team), cheerleaders, and band all have a specific routine that they practice for getting into the heads bowed position.

My son's public schools (LAUSD) never had prayers.
The public district where I'm employed does. I don't think it's appropriate. (ETA-Prayers at District events- like opening the board meeting, opening the school year at the whole District staff back to school event, but not at individual school events.)

I've always lived in Washington which is the "least churched state" so no, never. I'm amazed to hear it happens elsewhere. Im a Christian but find it really inappropriate.

At the football games, it is called "a moment of student expression" which translates into a prayer led by a student. I guarantee if a student offered a non-Christian prayer, the microphone would most likely malfunction. Save

Nope. Thankfully. We're in a Chicago suburb with a decent sized Jewish population and other religions as well. And those like me with no religion.

I'm in Indiana, recently moved to the Indy area. No prayers here that I've heard. I used to live in a small town in southern IN and they did have prayers, mostly student led, prayers around the flagpole, a prayer before a sports banquet, prayers at graduations. They also had released-time religious instruction for elementary students. This is where the students were led off campus for an hour of religious studies. I had no idea that this was lawfully allowed in public schools.

Yes to all at least 75% of the time. It's beyond inappropriate. I'm in South Carolina.

Seattle, and no, I have never heard a prayer at a school event. I grew up in California and never heard them there either (70s/80s).

My nephew's graduation had an opening AND a closing prayer from one of the local pastors. It didn't bother me at the time--I was all focused on my pride and joy!--but looking back I see that was pretty inappropriate. This was in Ohio.

Once I moved to New England - there was never prayer at public school It's my understanding that it's actually not legal. In Sante Fe ISD v. Doe, the Supreme Court ruled that student led prayer over a PA system was unconstitutional. The fact that it's "student led" wasn't important if it was still in school property, at a school event, faculty supervised, over the school PA, etc. I would love more info if you know of a case that says it is legal.

I just remember that a Federal Court ruling came down when I was in high school specifically said prayer at high school football games was unconstitutional and being outraged that our school still did it (and still does it today even after the Supreme Court has said that it's not ok).
I already knew I wanted to be a lawyer and was very in to following cases like that.

Not here in Northern California, and I'm old enough to remember even before the original Supreme Court school prayer decision (I forget what it was called, but it was in the early '60s and I was in primary grades) ... even before that, we never had any form of school prayer. We did have Christian prayers at the opening ceremonies for soccer, baseball leagues, etc., and it always annoyed the snot out of me. Not that I'm going to burst into flames or anything if I'm exposed to a Christian prayer, but knowing it never crossed these dingdongs' minds that either (1) not everyone involved was Christian (and we did have Jewish, Muslim, Hindu, and Buddhist people in our community, plus who knows what else [Wiccans! we had Wiccans, too] plus the non-religious types) or (2) who cares about the non-Christians anyway?? always just pissed me off no end. My husband was always trying to shush me. I think I embarrassed him. And the run-on sentence above may even outdo my run-on sentence in the dinner thread the other day. ha ha

It's Texas. Yes. We always pray and its led by a student or a pastor from the community.
And let a football player get hurt in a game and there will be an all-out revival service on his behalf right there on the field.
