Biscuits. No whip cream. You sprinkle it with sugar and then pour milk over the whole thing. Amazing. That is the way my mom and grandma made it and I was shocked when I found people ate it any other way.
I haven't had any since Mom died. I'm definitely going to make some this summer.

I am odd man out. I was raised on the "little cake things" and I love it that way. Do not like biscuits at all and angel food or pound cake would be my second choice. I don't think I have ever eaten a biscuit hot/cold, butter/jam that I liked. Had a scone once and my thoughts were "what's the big deal, this is just another funky biscuit".

We are pound cake fans, but the truth is that I will eat it any way you serve it.

I love strawberries with Angel food cake but would never call that strawberry shortcake . Strawberry shortcake is a very specific dessert made with a shortcake base, similar to a biscuit .

I grew up with the biscuit base so this is my favorite, but really any base will work, as long as it's not too sweet. Truly the hotter burning question is: do you use artificial whipped topping, aka chemicals a la cream? If so, you are a communist.

Pound cake or meringue shells. I've never tried strawberry shortcake with sweet biscuits but sounds good.

I like pound cake the best but there's something nostalgic about those spongy cake things. I haven't had one in decades and they probably don't taste like I remember them.

My favorite way is similar. My mom makes a hot milk cake that is my favorite but I've never made it myself. We put fresh strawberries on top, sprinkle them with sugar then pour warm milk over it all. Ends up like a strawberry soup. I bought some shortcake at the store since I didn't have time to bake. I'm off to add some strawberries and milk to it now. Yum! Save

We like pound cake grilled, but we tried biscuits tonight. I mean, I ate it but it wasn't pound cake. We're empty nesters for the summer and I don't have a biscuits for two recipe shoo we made a batch, got strawberries from the Amish guy on the corner and made enough for the street. My neighbors love y'all right now. I don't think anyone around here has had it with biscuits but everyone said 'i won't turn it down' That was a fun little project!

I'm not picky. I've had pound cake, angel food, and biscuits. I think my favorite is biscuits but they have to be homemade ones, even drop ones made from Bisquick mix. None of that biscuits in a tube. I like Pillsbury stuff but I don't like their biscuits in a tube. Their frozen dough ones are good.
Great, now I want to make some.

I've never even heard of using biscuits for this. Angel food is all I've used and those little cake things that look like a bowl. Me too. Or pound cake, but I've never heard of biscuits or white cake as the base.

I'd never heard of it the biscuit type way until 2 peas. All I've had is the sponge cake with strawberries. I'd be willing to try the other kind. Not something I care about either way.

It needs to be a sweet base. I can't even imagine eating these and thinking they are good on a plain biscuit. I will eat it, but it isn't the same. That seems to be what they call shortcake here in No. Maine, too. I am not from here, but have lived here for 20 years now.
My mom always used bisquick and it calls for sugar. I do that, as well.

So I had to come in and see why a shortcake thread was now at 3 pages. lol. I see it's just a difference of opinion on how it should be made. For the record, the correct way is to use those sponge cake things, sliced strawberries, maybe a sprinkle of sugar if the strawberries aren't sweet, and then whipped cream of course.

A true strawberry shortcake is a biscuit style. I prefer the angel food version because it is lighter, a bit sweeter and what I grew up with.

When I think of shortcake I think of shortbread; therefore neither cake nor biscuits would work for me. It would be a slice of shortbread.

Angel food cake or the individual spongey cake things (yellow color).
ETA: Is the biscuit version a Southern thing?
