And I'm siting in the hospital, in pain when I move. With a catheter that makes it hurt when I pee. This'll be my first night and they want to keep me for two nights. I don't speak enough polish, about 25% of workers I've seen speak English. But the worst part is I'm not going to be able to walk for a few weeks. I have a 2 year old, luckily I have a babysitter for the next 2 days but then what? Oh, and our flight home to the US is in 2 weeks so there's a good chance I won't be able to go. At least I don't need surgery because my pelvis is "stable".
Update: I asked my doctor about blood thinner and he said I would be on them for two weeks until I can start moving around. I got a shot in the stomach this morning which was probably the blood thinner. I got the catheter out this morning. I'm using a bedpan for now. Physical therapist came and showed me a few exercises but no attempt has been made to get me out of bed.
I'll be taking the ambulance back home tomorrow. My husband has already rented at wheelchair and walker with knee support.
Usually a probiotic is supplied with the antibiotic here. I also had my husband to bring some yogurt from home. I think between the regular babysitter and the person that cleans our house (she's really good with the two year old) I have someone through Friday to take care of the toddler.
I have ruled out the trip to the US. It was a 15 day trip to visit family and doctors. We may send our 11 year old to visit though. There's no way I can make it.

Usually with pelvic fx's here in the USA, they will let you walk with a walker or crutches. If its on one side of the pelvis, they may limit your wt bearing on that side. Do they have an orthopedic dr there? have you seen one? The sucky thing with a pelvic fx is that there really isn't anything they can do. It's like a rib fx. You just have to grin and bear it, and wait for it to heal. Getting up and moving is the best thing for you though, even if it does hurt, and getting the catheter out ASAP. good luck!!

Oh ouch. How did you fracture your pelvis? I hope you are able to fly so you can come back here in 2 weeks.

Riding my bike. I don't remember it but apparently I hit a weird bump in the road and lost control.
I've seen what I think was an ortho. I asked about using a walker but right now the answer is no. I fractured one side and not the other so at least that's good.
My catheter is better but it hurt like crazy going in (same as when I had one in the US) so I hope once things calm down it'll be ok.

I seriously doubt he'll be able to take much time off. He'll stop by on the way to work. I wish I could go home tomorrow though.

Wow, that sounds painful, I'm sorry! You should relax, and try not to stress. Let your husband take care of the kid(s). You take care of you!

Oh, I'm so sorry! I hope that it won't affect your trip home, but you may want to plan for extra pain meds. Make sure it's okayed by doctor and that there's no danger of DVT.

Hmmm...ortho RN here with 15 years of experience both at the bedside and now as a discharge planner at a major trauma hospital.
The catheter should be out of your bladder soon. Like today. They should be working with you to mobilize at a wheelchair level if they are truly not letting you bear weight through either leg. You can use a bedpan (not comfortable) or a bedside commode (toilet chair they can put right next to your bed and teach you to slide over to while not putting weight through your legs). The longer a catheter stays in, the higher the likelihood that you will get a UTI.
There should be a PT helping you learn how to transfer to/from a wheelchair. They may allow you to weightbear just for transfers (Can stand on one leg to pivot and sit in the wheelchair, but that is it--my pelvis MDs sometimes allow this, all depending on where the fracture is). Once your pain is controlled, the learning process is pretty quick for figuring out how to get around. For an isolated pelvic fracture in my hospital, we would plan on you remaining in the hospital for maybe 2-3 days max before you discharged to a wheelchair accessible environment. Maybe a skilled nursing facility if you were older or have really poor upper body strength or other medical issues that affect your mobility.
If your flight is in 2 weeks, there is every chance you can make it. Get a letter from the doctor/hospital explaining that you are nonweightbearing/wheelchair bound. They may be able to bump you up to something other than an economy seat, or at the very least can make sure to have someone assist you. It is totally possible to fly home with these injuries (would this be a short visit, or are you planning to remain in the US for a while?). You should definitely be on a blood thinner--usually a shot once or twice daily in the abdomen. If you fly, you need to be sure to ask to get these shots. You are at a higher risk for developing a blood clot in your legs just because you are not weightbearing. That risk goes up exponentially when you are on a long flight.
