Wow....so sorry!! All that teaching from alyca was awesome , and I agree about PT teaching you to transfer from bed to wheelchair, etc. AND getting that catheter out ASAP, then they need to get you a bedside toilet! Do they have you wearing elastic stockings that go from your feet to your thight (we call 'em "TEDS" for short in the US....anti-embolic stockings).... Also, I hope they taught you to move your legs, ankles, and feet around as much as you can while in bed! Aside from that (but you probably already know this)---IF you go on that flight, also be sure and rotate your ankles, feet, move your legs as much as you can also! Aside from all of that, I realize you STILL have to take care of a 2-year-old! I'm praying for you that you'll find a caregiver for your child, that you'll have minimal pain and fast healing! ETA--also, if you're on an antibiotic (most likely you are)---unless the doctor already has (i DOUBT it )***--- ask about being prescribed a probiotic, or at the very least---ask for yogurt with every meal (I realize these things may NOT be possible!!!) but worth a try!! The LAST thing you need is a super-infection (yeast) on TOP of having a broken pelvis----you poor thing!!! I wonder though, you're saying the catheter hurts, but in the ideal situation, you shouldn't feel it at all. I hope you don't already have a UTI / yeast infection, because that MIGHT explain the pain from what you THINK is the catheter. **a rant about antibiotics---it INFURIATES me that NOT. ONE. SINGLE. Doctor, PA, NP, RN, or pharmacist has EVER suggested either a probiotic OR eating yogurt (it needs to be the kind with live cultures!!!) when handing me an RX for an antibiotic. That makes me think they don't suggest this to ANY of their patients----WHY??? I have found that MANY people (myself included, in the past)---do NOT realize that these simple things MIGHT prevent them from getting a horrible yeast infection.

I just wanted to say how sorry I am to hear this, and wish you well! I lived with a girl a number of years ago who had broken her pelvis in a car accident, and she told me a lot about it. Hopefully you will heal quickly! It sounds like you will definitely need help with childcare.

Oh, my. A traveler's worst nightmare. I hope you heal quickly. And just think of the stories you'll have to tell... "that time I broke my pelvis in Poland..."

I asked my doctor about blood thinner and he said I would be on them for two weeks until I can start moving around. I got a shot in the stomach this morning which was probably the blood thinner. I got the catheter out this morning. I'm using a bedpan for now. Physical therapist came and showed me a few exercises but no attempt has been made to get me out of bed.
I'll be taking the ambulance back home tomorrow. My husband has already rented at wheelchair and walker with knee support.
Usually a probiotic is supplied with the antibiotic here. I also had my husband to bring some yogurt from home. I think between the regular babysitter and the person that cleans our house (she's really good with the two year old) I have someone through Friday to take care of the toddler.
I have ruled out the trip to the US. It was a 15 day trip to visit family and doctors. We may send our 11 year old to visit though. There's no way I can make it.

I'll be taking the ambulance back home tomorrow. My husband has already rented at wheelchair and walker with knee support. Did you ask the PT about when you would start working on mobility? Transfers and ambulation? Esp since you WILL be d/c'ing tomorrow? I would call them back and ask them. Also I would make sure that they practice with you HOW to use this walker before you d/c. Often a patient or a SO thinks they know what will work best, yet in reality it doesn't work until you have tried it. We often have family members get patients 4 wheeled walkers thinking they will be just great, have a seat, and brakes etc. Yet some patient can not use them due to their wt bearing, or the walker just moves too fast and doesn't give enough support like a 2 wheeled walker.

The PT said no walking at all for 2weeks. And no sitting upright for 2 weeks. We're buying a bedpan but I want to try a walker for the bathroom in a few days. Short distance between the bed and bathroom. I think the major issue will be to get on and off the toilet. But PT doesn't want me to do anything for 2 weeks. He did say as long as it doesn't hurt, I can move. But of course it hurts!!

So are you in a general hosp in Poland? or are you military? and is there any US military hospitals around you can be seen at? Laying flat for 2 wks, and not even sitting. WOW, that's like WAY conservative, and almost completely opposite then what we have ours do. We want people up and moving. You have the increased possibilities of blood clots, pneumonia, etc. Just be really careful. you want to do those ex's hopefully the PT gave you! and deep breathing ex's!!

I'm not military so I'm at a regular hospital. The ortho doc said today I can sit up in bed but not in a chair (I got clarification). At the end of the week I'll probably try to use a walker for a few steps with husband to see if there's pain. I've been doing PT exercises. There are just a few exercises the PT gave me, one was a deep breath through nose and out of mouth. I get X-rays again in 4 weeks.

A fun breathing exercise that will also entertain your dd is to blow bubbles. Simply and really works well. Watching her enjoy the bubbles will also take your mind off of the pain, as a distraction. Get better soon.
