So I fractured my pelvis *updated*

Hmmm...ortho RN here with 15 years of experience both at the bedside and now as a discharge planner at a major trauma hospital.

The catheter should be out of your bladder soon. Like today. They should be working with you to mobilize at a wheelchair level if they are truly not letting you bear weight through either leg. You can use a bedpan (not comfortable) or a bedside commode (toilet chair they can put right next to your bed and teach you to slide over to while not putting weight through your legs). The longer a catheter stays in, the higher the likelihood that you will get a UTI.

There should be a PT helping you learn how to transfer to/from a wheelchair. They may allow you to weightbear just for transfers (Can stand on one leg to pivot and sit in the wheelchair, but that is it--my pelvis MDs sometimes allow this, all depending on where the fracture is). Once your pain is controlled, the learning process is pretty quick for figuring out how to get around. For an isolated pelvic fracture in my hospital, we would plan on you remaining in the hospital for maybe 2-3 days max before you discharged to a wheelchair accessible environment. Maybe a skilled nursing facility if you were older or have really poor upper body strength or other medical issues that affect your mobility.

If your flight is in 2 weeks, there is every chance you can make it. Get a letter from the doctor/hospital explaining that you are nonweightbearing/wheelchair bound. They may be able to bump you up to something other than an economy seat, or at the very least can make sure to have someone assist you. It is totally possible to fly home with these injuries (would this be a short visit, or are you planning to remain in the US for a while?). You should definitely be on a blood thinner--usually a shot once or twice daily in the abdomen. If you fly, you need to be sure to ask to get these shots. You are at a higher risk for developing a blood clot in your legs just because you are not weightbearing. That risk goes up exponentially when you are on a long flight.
