We are hiring movers to do our big stuff on a Friday. On Thursday, we will have possession of the house and thinking of getting some teenagers to help us with just boxes. What is a fair hourly rate to pay them? Again, nothing big line furniture and our boxes aren't too heavy. The professional movers are $35/hour if that gives some reference in my area
Help!

How long do you anticipate they'll be there? And are they kids you already know (maybe they mow the lawn) or some random teens you're going to look for?

Friends of friends but not kids I would know socially. I am not sure on times. I would take them for how long they would give us and wanted to offer an hourly rate.

I don't have much advice on how much to pay. Depends where you live, and what teens might expect. I think you might also get some kids who will work hard regardless of the amount, and some that won't - again regardless of how much you pay. However, as someone who has moved fairly often, and had friends help, I'll give my advice. Be careful what you have them move. Using professional movers, we've had some things break or get damaged. Obviously the cost/item has been replaced under their insurance. We've had friends help us though, and more than once we've had someone accidentally drop something, and we had a table that got a huge long deep scratch in it. When you have friends, or just people as cheap paid labor you miss out on all that insurance. People feel bad about damaging something, and that creates hard feelings. 5 years since our last move, and I'm still sad about our table (repaired, but you can still tell), and a box of pottery mugs that got dropped. Not much you can do though. Nothing wrong with some people to help out, but just a little friendly advice. Good luck with the move!
