is becoming a bigger and lengthier process of late. I have to direct and position the 2 Dachshunds and Beagle now. It's like a brand new circumstance, but in the same bed with the same sleepers.
A few months ago, everyone had a preferred place and went to it willingly.
What is making this harder of late? Any suggestions or similar issues?

My corgi only sleeps in the bed if hubby is gone or if there is a storm. Otherwise he likes to be under the bed. Sheltie sleeps beside the bed on her own bed. Dogs have very little respect for personal space. Are they getting on in years or still young? Who knows. Dogs are like honey badgers. They don't give a shit.

Oh my gosh that Corgi is adorable! Yes the Dachshunds are getting older. Aren't we all? They only give a shit if I throw a terrible tantrum and yell and throw shit. Which I'm not willing to do on a nightly basis.

Do you direct them back to their previous prefered spots? My guess is someone is making a bid to move up in the hierarchy. You may see them all as "the dogs" but they each know which of them is higher status than the others. Someone has decided to see if he/she can move up.

Don't ask me, my lab puppy is as big as a preteen. All I can do is beat him to the bed and then shove him as hard as I can. The days he goes to doggie day care is worse, I have to agree its probably a hierarchy thing.

The little one (7yo maltese terrier X) is the boss and gets the top end of the bed. The big one (3 yo great dane X) is at the bottom. They both know their place. It works out fine, except on those mornings when I wake up and they both climb all over me wanting pats. The littlie one is OK, but the horse can leave bruises.

Only the giant Whippet is on the bed and there are often hierarchy issues. He is still learning that this is not his bed which he is allowing us to share. If I push him out of my area, he will just come back and lay on me, he wants that spot. Believe me, he is not "Whippet thin", and 50 pound of dog laying on top of me does not equal a restful nights sleep.
I think it may be hopeless and I am about to give in and move to the floor with the Greyhounds. They have crib mattresses for beds and seem to understand how to share and respect the hierarchy.

My border collie definitely knows what she is doing. She hops up on the bad, spins around and plops down with her head on my pillow. When I try to move her, she growls a little at me. Doesn't deter me haha. I push her to the end of the bed and moments later she works her way up next to me. If she doesn't think she has enough room she makes attempts to push me. That dog... I can't imagine having to fight for space with three haha.

My 10 pound Shitty Poo takes up more room on the bed than my 6’2 hubby. If you move her, she just moves back and gives you this soulful look like what do you think you're doing? I can't imagine sharing the bed with a bigger dog!

Maybe it's because it's too warm to go immediately under the blankets! MaxTheBeagle likes to stay above the covers, at the foot of the bed lately. Maybe that change has messed with the routine. He'll go under the blankets later in the evening (when he feels cooler, I guess.) But that doesn't help the initial bedtime positioning issues.

At first, it was cute, but at 65 lbs, he's literally spooning me all night and I don't even like DH moving into my bed territory. I thought he really loved me, but I put a pillow at the foot of the bed and he happily followed it there. He wasn't seeking my love, he just wanted a soft spot to rest his head. Men!

It does sound like they are playing I'm the leader.
I have a dog and cat who vie for the space above my head. Loser sleeps at my waist. Between the two of them and my husband there isn't much room left for me. Good thing I'm a sound sleeper or I'd have to move out.

I'm often closer to clinging to the edge of the mattress... I have a Q size bed and she's about 40lbs or so. plenty of room! there are times she sleeps on 'her side'. She has her own pillow!

We have two golden retrievers that my husband loves to tell people that they split us up. He took one (Sammy) and went to another bedroom. I have the other (Pepper) who sleeps with me every night. Most of the time he stays in his "position" (which is the word I use for his place at the foot of the bed). Some mornings I wake up and Pepper is sleeping like a human being with his head on the pillow. DH joins me in bed some mornings and immediately Pepper gets between us - it's like he's telling DH this is my territory Dad.

We have a 50 lb Lab/German Shepherd mix who, most of the time prefers the floor. No matter how much we coax. She will pop up and visit for five mins then she's gone. Occasionally, I will wake up shoved over onto my husbands side of the bed and not only is she in my spot, but she has my pillow too! I haven't found a pattern so I've no idea what makes her decide to do that.

Stella sleeps with me every night (DH has his own bed cause he is a bad sleeper and it annoys me). She takes the right side of the bed just like a human. She starts at the foot of the bed and by the morning she is sleeping next to me on the other pillow. My only complaint is her butt ends up in my face - I can't get her to sleep up/down only sideways and her butt is always inward. It's annoying.

I love it when my dogs butt ends up towards me. Other than his giant Yoda ears, it is my favorite thing about him. So fluffy.

I have an 80lb Doodle (see on left) who will sleep at the bottom of the bed, until my DH goes to work. He then moves up into DH's space with his head on the pillow. It's quite disconcerting waking up to that big brown nose pointing into my face.
OP, would banishing them all from your bed help with the struggle?

I can't imagine having the dog sleeping with me all night - he gets locked up in the garage with his bed, blankie, toys etc. He is only on my bed for a quick cuddle or when he streaks in so fast and I can't catch him in time.
The trainer I am going to, advised that he stays off our 'den area' - something about alpha dogs, pack leaders......

I practically have to beg my Sheltie to stay on the bed. He prefers the bathroom floor. When my parents had a dachshund he would burrow under the covers and snuggle right next to me. I loved it!

Lady, my Great Dane Shepard mix sleeps beside me usually. Ebony, my beagle terrier mix usually sleeps at my feet, but she starts out trying to squeeze between Lady and my side. My one cat, Figaro, comes to bed with me and has to be under the covers, but she usually leaves when I am done reading. Sassy the cat is banned from the bedroom as all she wants to do is attack everyone at bed time. And my cat Callie sleeps wherever she wants and doesn't have to share with anyone since all of the other animals are in bed with me.

It is too warm. My dog doesn't sleep on my bed but my cat will, except during August. It is too hot for her. She sleeps on the floor next to my bed during August.

Boo Kitty has her own pillow. Zilla the Jack Russell mix comes up for her nightly scratches, but when I tell her "dog end" she has to go either sleep by my feet or cuddle in the crook of my knees. Missy is a GSD mix and she sleeps with my son because she's a bed hog.

Riker, our Beaglier pup takes up far too much space. We have a king size bed, and I am always on the very edge of it. DH takes up a normal amount of space. Riker? Well he starts out at the foot of the bed, but somehow through the night, he ends up sleeping cross-wise between DH and I. Taking up more space than either of us.

I practically have to beg my Sheltie to stay on the bed. He prefers the bathroom floor. My Sheltie, Lucy is the same. She will hop in bed, get comfy, then when I crawl in, she'll jump down. I think it's too hot. Or maybe she doesn't want to share. She won't stay on the couch when I'm there, either. She does like to sleep right next to the couch or bed--but prefers the cool, bare floor--especially in the summer.

No help here. We haven't had a dog sleep in our bed until our late Max (mini doxie we just put down after Mother's Day) was a puppy. SOMEONE *cough*cough*ME*cough*cough* fed him a small container of that Frosty Paws ice cream for dogs...and he pooped UNDER the covers and dh stuck his hand on a turd and it stuck to his palm. He screamed like a little girl when I turned the light on at 2am and he had a turd stuck to him. That was the end of ANY dog sleeping in our bed.

Ohh gosh I can relate and I have two BIG dogs. It doesn't help that DH goes to bed before me, Pia the girl, likes to keep my spot warm till I come to bed. By then she is very comfortable. Sometimes on my pillow like a person. She'd stay there if I didn't make them go out to go potty before I go to bed. I make them both go out before midnight so they aren't waking up in the middle of the night. I'll be glad when we get the dog door fixed. But that at least gives me the power to move them.
Duke usually stays at the end of the bed. But he gets mad and jumps off if I try to move my feet to lay down. He's good with his kennel after that. He always has. We leave his door open and he has a nice bed in there. It's in our room. We did finally get a big dog pillow for Pia so after they do go out she usually moves to the pillow. That seems to work for now.

I think Remy the Killer Shih Tzu is trying to push me off the bed and have DH all to himself. He doesn't get under the covers, but he digs at them and piles up the comforter for his maximum comfort and I am left with just a thin little blanket.
