This place needed a good Dave Ramsey-ish post to make it feel like home!
A few weeks ago I got a letter from my mortgage company. Worried that we were behind, or something awful, I opened it and about had a heart attack. It said to call the bank before our final payment. I was sure this was a mistake as I'd been on track to pay off our loan by June of 2015. In fact, in December, when we got our annual statement, I remember using a mortgage calculator to figure out how much I needed to pay each month to pay it off by that date. So to get this letter was a total surprise. I was worried that it was wrong!!
I had the loan officer double check, and sure enough....we were down to our final payment!! I have NO CLUE what I did back in December!! But it's the best math error I've ever made.
Today was payday and I was so giddy to make that payment!!!
Then I made sure to go online and pay off our two credit cards (OK...not DR approved...but they always get paid off monthly) so I can truly say we're 100% debt free! It feels good!!
UPDATE: I have been baffled at my math mistake from December. I just came across my end-of-year mortgage statement and finally figured out my mistake! At the top it says ending balance as of 12/31/13. I took $ amount and entered it into a mortgage calculator to pay it off in 18 mos. but...DUH!!! There was an entire YEAR of payments listed after that with my TRUE ending balance.
In the meantime I have been thankful not to have a mortgage when DH's car needed $600 of work and I slashed my tires last week (drove over something!) and had to cough up $800 on the spot!!

Congratulations!! Isn't it the best feeling? We paid off our mortgage several years ago and have pretty much always paid the CCs off monthly. I love it!

Thanks!!!! We had a 15 year loan which we paid off 2 1/2 years early. Our daughter heads to college next year, so we're putting all the "payments" toward that.

Isn't it an amazing feeling to be totally debt free? When I paid my condo off I went to the bank to do it. I cried because my DH had died about six months before and never lived to see it paid off. I had a new place built about 6 years later but was very careful to remain mortgage free. I love knowing that I don't owe anybody anything.
Yay for you!!

Are you doing anything to celebrate? We hope to be debt free by the end of the year and plan on going to a fancy restaurant to reward ourselves.
