I'm somewhat of a germophobe so maybe this is something no one else would even think twice about. We went to BK tonight and while waiting on some carry out we saw something that caught my attention. A worker was mopping the floor (all over but at this point was at the same area we were, where people pick up orders) and when she finished, she put the rugs, which had been hanging over the divider (where people get in line to order) and put them on the floor. She had to wrestle with them a little bit to get them to lie flat. They are big rugs and look heavy too. Then she grabbed a big jug of ice by the top rim (with her hands inside a little bit) and put ice in the drink machine. She did this twice-two different jugs of ice. Then she got a basket that was full of the little spigot things where the soda comes out and screwed them onto the drink dispenser. She never washed her hands between handling the rugs and touching the ice/soda spigots.
Maybe I'm overly squeamish, and I do know that probably worse things happen in restaurants, but right in front of customers? And isn't it some kind of health policy to wash your hands before handling things that come into contact with food or drinks?

I'm definitely not a germaphobe, but that would have bothered me too.

Totally not okay. Definitely a health violation. I would have said something. It's amazing to me how many stupid, stupid things are done by those serving/prepping food.

That shouldn't happen in somewhere that serves food to the public.

Thanks. I feel validated. LOL. I sent a message about it through the bk website but I will probably call the restaurant too. The night manager was standing right behind the counter. He actually filled the ice buckets for her.
ETA: I almost forgot. A few months ago when they offered two different kinds of fries, they gave my son the wrong kind. We went to the counter to let them know and the girl took the fries from my son and poured them back into the bin with the rest of the cooked fries. Turns out that was against their policy too.

I'm certainly no germaphobe but even I wouldn't accept that. The worker is lacking in basic hygiene when handling food and food related utensils.

Sounds like more staff training is called for.

I am decidedly not a germaphobe, but that would have made me very unhappy to see and I probably would have said something to the manager or e-mailed the company when I got home.

She definitely should have washed her hands.
But, and I'm just saying, you don't even wanna know the grossness that is the restaurant business. You don't wanna ask how often the soda machine is actually cleaned. Or to see the black moldy slime that is in it when it isn't cleaned often.
To eat at a restaurant, you have to have somewhat of an ignorance is bliss mentality, or you will b e too skeeved out to eat there.
But I just wanna say, you are totally right. She should have washed her hands.

Yes, that would bother me. Yuck.
I was in a McDonalds years ago standing in line waiting to order. I watched a young employee in the cooking area open a package of bacon with his teeth! Um, no thanks. Just lost my appetite.
This one isn't food related but definitely ick. I was picking up a prescription the other day and the employees in the pharmacy have to put their finger on a spot on the screen to activate the register. Well, the woman helping me had dry fingers so the register wasn't letting her in. Her coworker suggested she put lotion on her hands because the machine doesn't recognize your fingerprint if your fingers are dry. So, she licked her finger and pressed it to the screen. The coworker and I shared a split second look of shock and disgust.

I watched a young employee in the cooking area open a package of bacon with his teeth! Um, no thanks. Just lost my appetite. So many gross examples in this thread. I've called management before on these types of problems. Many years ago I was having lunch with my daughters in a restaurant (not fast-food.) An employee was cleaning up some tables and wiped something up off the floor with her rag. Which she followed immediately with wiping off the table. Just this past winter twice in one week I shopped in two separate grocery stores. The cashiers hands were too dry to open the plastic bags and they both ended licking their fingers and then proceeded to pack my groceries in the bags.

Gross... I do find it interesting as a Germaphobe you would eat in a Fast Food restaurant... I always think of them as having questionable standards.. teens just aren't the best at hygiene.. frontal lobe not being fully formed and all.

In restaurants, I tend to ask myself, 'Is it a health violation?' and react accordingly. This would be a health violation.
I was recently at a fast food place in the mall where they cook the meat on a grill in front of you. They used the same spatula on both the raw meat and to serve the cooked meat. They offered to prepare it again, but I opted to get my money back. I figured that, if they were willing to do something so blatantly wrong in front of me, the stuff I wasn't seeing would be that much worse.

The "I work in a grocery shop and I know the hygiene rules" part of me agrees with you all. I would NOT do that at work. Ick. I wear plastic gloves and wash my poor, cracked hands several times each hour.
The realistic part of me wonders how often I've shaken the doormat at home, brushed the dust off my hands on the backs of my jeans and then made myself a cold drink. And have not been sick afterwards. (I'm hardly ever sick.) Only the other day I was loading the dishwasher after DH and I had finished eating a chicken dinner, and I realised to my horror that I had picked up the wrong spatula by mistake to serve the cooked chicken. We were both fine.
Unless we are immuno-compromised in some way, a bit of dirt isn't going to hurt. In a public food outlet, absolutely this shouldn't be done because you don't know whether any of your customers may be on chemo or otherwise poorly. But if we're generally healthy, let's keep a bit of perspective.

I grew up in a home that would have been qualified for Hoarders - The Early Years. Not a lot of germy things register for me because it's so much cleaner than what I grew up experiencing. I'm not a germaphobe in the slightest and have a pretty high tolerance for icky. This situation would have caught my attention. Ick.

It probably wouldn't have bothered me all that much, but I'm pretty sure it's a health code violation, yes. I can see where it might have bothered others that are more germaphobic than I am.

I'm not a germophobe, and that would bother me. Ick!!! Good for you for saying something. WARNING! GROSS FAST FOOD STORY TO FOLLOW... I was at a Jack in the Box restaurant and ordered curly fries. I had emptied the box of fries onto a napkin, and one of my "fries" was a FRIED MOTH. I've never been more grossed out.
Took my tray to the counter to show them my deep fried "treat" and they asked me if I wanted a refund, giving it to me with no apology. Then they asked if I wanted to call their Corporate office, picking up the phone on the wall as if to start making the call. It was so bizarre.
There were people in line and I know they could hear my conversation as it wasn't a big place. If I were them, I don't know if I could have placed an order. So gross!

Is this the same BK that also put the wrong fries back in the bin? If so, I don't think I'd simply complain to the manager again. It's obvious that this facility lacks the proper training when it comes to safe food handling. I would report this to their corporate office or the health board.

Yesterday I got a frozen Starbucks drink and asked for no whip. The barista forgot and reached for the can of whip. When I declined I then asked if he could fill the dome with more of the drink. It flowed over the small dome opening and he wiped the excess off with his bare hand. Didn't bother me at all.
In the OP's instance I would have spoken to the person in charge and recommended that the employee in question be given additional training.

Having worked in the food industry for a while in my youth, I've seen many things behind the scenes that would make most people want to cook dinner at home every night. Imagine what goes on behind the scenes at that restaurant, for example, if this is what happens in public areas. And yes, she should have washed her hands.

And that, my friends, is why I haven't eaten at a BK in 10 years! I have never been able to eat there without a severe and sudden case of the squirts.

There were some other things that were questionable, but not that for us.
