There's a friend I work with, and it was her birthday today. I brought in these delicious petit fours from a local bakery. I told another girl I work with there were petit fours in the break room. She said, "A petit what?" In an annoyed way. I said "Petit Fours, they're like little bites of cake." She then said "Why didn't you just say cake? I have no idea what a petit four is."
Dude, I brought dessert! Retract those claws!
Do you know what a petit four is?

Yes, and I love them because I can try all the desserts and not feel guilty.

Of course! I can't say I've actually HAD them very often, but we always got the Swiss Colony catalogs at Christmas, and I'm sure that's where I learned what they were.

yes and your coworker was rude - it's never a good idea to be rude to the bearer of dessert. But I suspect she felt stupid for not knowing and was defensive about that.

I was nice in explaining what a petit four was, I'm not sure why she snipped at me. I just walked away. As I was thinking later, I wondered if I was being snobby saying "Petit Fours"? Who knows. Even my hubs knows what a petit four is and he's not fancy in any way, shape or form!

Yes, I do.
I would imagine your coworker will be even more confused when she finds out they're not always cake.

Yes, I do now. But I had never heard of them until I was at a luncheon in grad school. One of my classmates said they were over there, and my husband and I were both like, "what's that?" She giggled and told us it was cake. And life got a little bit sweeter that day!

Yes, we got a dessert catalog for some reason when I was little and I used to read it like a book. The petit fours looked so pretty!

Your coworker was rude. But I thought petit fours were a type of cookie. Learned something new today.

She's not only ignorant; she's rude.
And now I want a petit four.

Yes. The Swiss Colony ones aren't very good though. The frosting stuff on the outside is kind of waxy tasting.

BTW: they were the small fondant cakes with glazed icing dripping down the sides. So delicious!! The birthday girl loved them!

I know what they are and have seen them in catalogs but I am pretty sure I have never actually had one. I know several people that would likely give me a "look" if I told them that too.
Next time maybe you could offer her a Ladyfinger (not the okra kind, I just saw those when I Google Ladyfinger ).

Yes, but I'm not sure how to pronounce it lol. I say it like "petty-four" (silent t), or is it Petite four lol
