We are about to move and will be using a pool a lot this summer.
My 15 dd is concerned about her hair drying out, and turning green. (She has obviously heard horror stories from friends) She has medium brown hair with the bottom tips Ombre'd blonde. She struggles with dryness to begin with, so concerned with the dryness from the chlorine/chemicals also.
For anyone who swims a lot, what shampoo and conditioner do you use?

I have some old suave pool shampoo that I like, I don't think they make it anymore.
One tip I've learned is to make sure you hair is wet before you get in. The hair will have soaked up non chlorine water leaving less opportunity for the chlorinated water to bing with hair.

We swim almost every day in the summer and my hair is not color treated but does get dry. I wet it before getting in the pool and usually use a hair oil as well. Then I make sure to use a protein conditioner once a week or so and I don't heat style during the summer if I can avoid it.
I use a sulfate free shampoo/conditioner for dry hair - Biolage or Dermorganic usually. My DD likes Shea Moisture too.

I lived in the pool when I was your daughter's age. I had straight blonde hair. I always throughly wet my hair before I got into the pool. Saturated hair is less likely to absorb all of the pool chemicals. I also put about a quarter size of conditioner in my hair and a cap if I was lap swimming. The conditioner also protects the hair. I don't remember using a special shampoo or conditioner (it was the late 70's- so probably Pert!). I think anytime you spend time out in the sun your hair is going to lighten regardless. We spent a week in Mexico in March and I looked like I had a dye job gone bad when I got home.

I'll be watching this thread because my girls have already been living in the pool the last 2 weeks and both deal with dry hair. I do have hair oil, so I think I'll be applying that in their hair after they shower a few days a week to see if that helps.

Like a few other mentioned I also wet my hair before getting into chlorinated water and spray a conditioning leave in treatment on. It helps create a barrier. Right now I'm using Its A 10 leave in conditioning spray.

I just asked at my salon about the dyed hair and pool water. (My niece wants to dye and color her ends). The advice we received was that even the first time swimming the color is going to fade to a shadow of what it was. Blues will turn pale minty green, reds will turn orangey and yellows greens!

I have found that the Paul Mitchell Three Clarifying shampoo is the only one that works well at preserving hair color and removing the chlorine. I use a deep treatment once weekly for conditioning/moisturizing, but otherwise I just use a moisturing conditioner and avoid volumizing conditioners. Some of my favorites are L'Oreal Total Repair Damage Erasing Balm and It's a 10.

Make a formula of 1:1 water and conditioner. Doesn't really matter what kind of conditioner. Spray mixture on hair before entering the pool. The formula will coat the hair shaft and protect it from the chemicals.

Had beer in it and was great for bringing out highlights in brown hair

Right now I'm using a Ultra Swim after swim shampoo. It seems to be working OK, but I'm not a blonde. My highlights seem fine though, and I've been swimming up to four times a week.

My aunt owns a hair salon in WI and this is what she recommends to save money. In the last we've used Aveda sun care for DD. It works great but is kind of pricey.

I use an after swim shampoo twice a week in the summer because my hair will turn green from the chlorine. I get mine at Sally's.

Ive heard the girls do the mix suggested below. My two practices a day swimmer boy uses the swim shampoo sold at Sally's, and a cap. Lots of protection with a cap... But he's a boy and would wear green tips with pride. Make a formula of 1:1 water and conditioner. Doesn't really matter what kind of conditioner. Spray mixture on hair before entering the pool. Wet hair and a swimming cap helped mine.

My blondies use pert plus or suave clarifying shampoo after they swim. Those are my standbys for preventing green.

Mailibu C Wellness - Swimmers Wellness Shampoo. Looks like right now it's on sale. Love this stuff. It doesn't have any harsh ingredients. My DD had to take swimming in school, she's a red head and I got this for her. I guess it's the official hair care of USA Water Polo, too. It made her hair shine & gave volume. Also read as mentioned above to get the hair wet before entering water, and spray with a hair oil, too to protect it. www.malibuc.com/catalog/cn/4/special-offersI feel like I'm an ad for this, but I seriously love the stuff!
