Why is it inappropriate to wear high heels to take your kid somewhere? I would consider it inappropriate if she was trying to play baseball in heels. Is it because you think they are attention grabby? I can see them being an inappropriate choice if you are walking on an uneven surface (dirt, grass) or climbing into an open grid bleacher. We had someone wear flip flops to dog training the other day. In this training we run down and back and around the ring. So I agree, shoes can be inappropriate for the event She had to take her shoes off to do the class.

I thought everyone in America can run in flip flops lolol.

Where do you all live who report that stilettos and heels in general are the norm? I would say that in my area, a woman of mom-years choosing to wear heels to anything but a formal event would be setting out to be noticed. It's not the norm in any arena I travel in. I do see young, as in teen or college age girls, wearing very high heels sometimes, but again, not really the norm. I'm willing to believe there is a regional difference. I have to agree with this, with the caveat that I think it's an effort to be stylish, not garner attention, even though that would be the result in my conservative town. That being said, I'm out of the judging other women for what they wear business, because as a woman in my late 50s, I am damn well gonna wear what I want to wear, so I grant others the same courtesy.

I think it is a thing too. I'm seeing it in the minivan mommy crowd a lot. Where I live it is pretty casual so flip flops are the norm with shorts. High heels stand out when paired with shorts. I don't think using the term "inappropriate" is inappropriate, It is fitting. Just as it wouldn't be appropriate to wear shorts to an interview for a high-powered position. Or to wear a full-length formal gown to pick up your kid at the daycare. Inappropriate doesn't mean "wrong" or "immoral" just not appropriate for the situation. The minivan mommy crowd?

I was thinking the same thing. I'm not judging, more of a bewilderment because it's just not something I see. I only see heels cracked out on the teen set for school Dances otherwise pretty much never. Seattle area is pretty casual.

I agree, Polka-Dot. To be "stylish" around here PNQ) would never involve stilettos. Goretex, polar fleece, and shoes you can hike or run in are all the rage with the mini-van mommies I see.

My nephew did a degree in environmental studies. He had us roaring with laughter when he told us that they had a day in the Peak District, studying the effect of drystone walls on the environment, with a session of building/ repairing a wall. They were told to dress appropriately for the weather (cold, dank, misty as a rule) and in particular, to have sturdy footwear.
One girl turned up in a micro mini skirt and 6" killer heels. No allowances were made for her.
She didn't do it again.

I've only seen it once here. It was about 15 years ago when DS was playing rec soccer in like second grade. The mom of another boy on the team frequently wore spiky high heels to the fields. She had a hard time navigating the grassy fields because the heels would sink in to the grass with each step. I probably only remember it now because it was such an exception to the norm.
In her case, I would call it impractical vs inappropriate. But if people can safely manage the terrain in heels and that's what they want to wear, fine by me. When DS was running competitively in HS and college, I wore primarily sneakers with whatever I was wearing to every meet to either get around the XC course quickly to watch his race or to get my own walks in between his events at his track meets. Me attempting that in any kind of heel would have made some excellent entertainment for the other spectators, for sure!

Around here the trend is cute car while childless, minivan when you have babies to about the time your youngest is in 2nd/3rd grade, SUV until they graduate or they get their license and then either another cute car, a Prius or the dream car. There are a lot of similarities among the women with kids in those age groups. It's as though their fashion, hobbies, car choices, even home decorating choices, are defined less by their own age but by their kids' ages.

I admit, the combination of short shorts and tall heels isn't something that is typically seen in my area-or at least the parts I hang out it in.
It isn't the heels that are unusual, and goodness knows it isn't the short shorts, it is the combination of the two that might raise an eyebrow or two.
I wear heels, and Darwin attacked me one day. I was trying to walk and chew gum at the same time and fell down. Scrapped up knee, hurt my foot terribly and spilled my darn fresh, perfect ice Sonic Diet Coke. Not to mention scuffed and scraped up one of my favorite pair of shoes. It was a while before I could wear heels again (my little foot swelled up to the size of a cantaloupe.) I wear flip flops all the time-but I do love a nice looking heel. But I won't ever try to walk, chew gum and tote a perfect ice Sonic Diet Coke again. That was just one task too many. My foot hurt for sure, but I sure was pissed about that Diet Coke.

I also wouldn't care what she wore, other than to think it wasn't very practical. But then, I'm a sneakers and jeans kind of gal at sporting events.

I'd actually love to know what exactly it 'smacks' of I did once sprain my ankle wearing stilettos but it wasn't really the fault of the shoes it was more the fault of the copious amounts of Southern Comfort I'd drunk while wearing the shoes!!

Meh. To each their own. My old boss was incapable of walking around in flats. Seriously, she couldn't do it. She needed at least a 4" heel at all times. So yeah, she'd be the one at the field in high heels just because they're more comfortable for her. I have an older relative like this. She's worn heels for sixty years, not a tennis shoe type girl. Her feet cannot handle flats, or even house shoes, for any length of time.

In fact I wanted a photo on the rocks, so I scrambled down the rocks for a perfect wedding shot in 3 inch stiletto like heels even though I don't even climb on rocks in sneakers. I just wore the same shoes out to dinner last night but we decided to feed the birds before we went in because our friends were stuck in traffic. I could have used those heel protectors when I was walking around near the rocks by the restaurant.

I rarely wear heels. I've come to value comfort over fashion, I guess. On the occasion that I do wear them, I must admit that I feel a bit sexier and they definitely make my legs & butt look better.

There is one mom at our school who no matter what she wears (usually jeans or short shorts, skirts, whatever) is wearing stilettos. And I mean she has the most tallest stilettos made to man kind. She is SUPER skinny, not sickly skinny type, but just skinny... I have NO idea how she walks on those puppies.. But for every single event I have seen her at she has those shoes on. And it draws attention, just from her looks.. everyone turns to watch... and funny thing is I had no idea her kid was in my daughter's class until I showed up for an event and there she was. Oh well...

Mom at baseball in heels, here. I just haven't had time to change between work, drive thru dinner and getting to the field for 530.

I think wearing heels anywhere is stupid. On a field is just downright asking for a broken ankle. So I'd be judging her for her complete lack of situational awareness. And then I'd be judging her (like I do everyone who wears heels) for destroying her feet and posture.
Then I'd just stop caring, though I'd probably be checking to see how miserable she's doing in her heels and short shorts. Cause there's no way that's even remotely comfortable.
And I'm okay with my being judgemental.

One of my friends told me that last week she brought her 7 year old to sandlot baseball and another mom was wearing stiletto heels. Last night we were at another baseball event for kids that age and there was a mom wearing stilettos. It very well could be the same person, but I'm wondering if this is a "thing". I know the mom (casually) who was wearing them last night and have never seen her wear anything like that before. She had on short shorts along with the stilettos, so I don't think it was that she was coming straight from work. Seemed totally inappropriate for the occasion. Have you seen this where you live? What kind of work involves stilettos and short shorts anyway? I was once amused by a woman wearing such a get up at a pro hockey game... She was descending 345 stairs with a large beer in each hand. Flinging and tossing her very long bling hair. And wearing stripper shoes. It was a sight to behold. It's far more fussy than I ever wanna be. And dangerous but it does make for interesting observations.

No way it's comfortable FOR YOU. I teach with someone who's been teaching for almost 30 years. Choir, and she's on her feet all day long. She wears heels every day. EVERY day, even casual Friday. For her, they're comfortable. She has no problem with them at all. For me, it'd be like torture. But, hell if I'd tell that woman that I want to check to see how miserable she is and hell if I'm going to judge her. She's an awesome teacher who is most comfortable in heels. It's not up to me to tell another woman what to wear and where (or to judge them for it, especially when it's so innocuous). I think we have enough MEN doing that already. Let's not do it to each other. SaveSave

That's where I was coming from when I asked the OP how she could keep from laughing. I mean the mental picture of these two things together brought up other combos: how about a man at the beach wearing a tie? It could go on and on.
