For the possibility of someone traipsing through, saying, "Damn! This *insert item* is missing a screw!"
Pitch it in the trash without a second thought?
Pitch it in the trash WITH a second thought?
Stop everything in search of an item missing a screw?

After wondering for a second where the hell it came from, I pitch it in the black hole known as the junk drawer.

Oh I always wonder if we'll need it later but after that fleeting thought, into the trash it goes.

It goes straight into the can of lost screws and nails. You never know when you need one "just that size."

I totally agree with airforcemom. You never know when you will find that screw's home.

Keep it. DH is always losing or looking for screws.

Not a thought trash - they have these nifty places where they sell screws in all shapes and sizes. 5 years from now when I discover the item with the missing screw, I'm much more likely to find an appropriate screw there, than recall where I "saved" every random screw I come across.

Sharla, thank you for asking! You brighten up my day! In my house, on the farm, there is no end to the assortment of things I have swept up. Mostly in the laundry/mudroom. Sometimes I save it and put it in a catchall container of screws and nails, sometimes I ask if they know where it came from and if they need it, sometimes I can't be bothered and dump the dustpan contents in the trash. Usually the screw/nail/bolt came from a pocket, rather than a household item.

I would throw it in the trash-DH would save it with the thousand other miscellaneous screws and nails that he'll never use.

Depends on what's recently happened in my house- like has dh been working on a project? If dh is around I will show it to him and ask if he knows what it is. A few times it's turned out to be really important so usually I will just cram them in a junk draw. If it's just an ordinary finish nail or screw like I know we have a huge box of I will toss it.

Pitch it in the trash. Then, days later when DH asks if I've seen said item, I feign ignorance and say, "Haven't seen it."

Keep, I have a special small 3x3 open container (think tupperware) in my junk drawer just for these kinds of things. The box has become a great time and money saver. Especially for missing puzzle pieces. Put together a puzzle with a missing piece? We find it in the lost and found box. There is no more than an inch of stuff in there at one time.
I also put unidentifed pieces in there -One odd shapped screw turned out to be part of my new dining table. (My 8 year old was unscrewing them) -Another flat oval rubber piece turned out to be a part of the bottom of my expensive computer mouse (do we use the term mouse anymore?) that kept from it sliding all over the desk. -countless toy parts -ikea pieces -keys

As for keys, I keep them, afraid they go to something I've forgotten, but will need if I trash them.

Depends. We're in the process of finishing our basement, anything left on the floor by DH is fair game for the trash and he knows it. Anything found elsewhere in the house goes in the junk drawer.

Toss it without mercy. Even if I did need that exact screw in three week's time...I'd have no idea what I did with it.

Toss it. For as many "essential" screws that I may toss (LOL), my husband has hoarded at least 2 in their place, so we are well stocked.
