For the possibility of someone traipsing through, saying, "Damn! This *insert item* is missing a screw!" Pitch it in the trash without a second thought? Pitch it in the trash WITH a second thought? Stop everything in search of an item missing a screw? I look around to see what may be ready to fall apart, then if I don't find anything I toss it in the tool drawer in the kitchen in the "odds and ends" container that holds odd screws, washers, picture hangers, tiny screwdrivers for kids toys, small brads, extra PVC couplers, etc.......

DH has a collector's stash of odd screws, washers and whatnot that he has organized in the garage. There have been many, many times that his odd collection of bits and pieces has come in handy, so yeah, I'd save it. I just put stuff like that on his workbench and let him decide if it's keep-worthy or not.
I once had a boss, though, who collected and saved everything he saw on the ground. Rubber bands, screws, pen caps, pieces of wire - nothing was off limits. His office was stacked with boxes and boxes of things he'd found on the floor or in the parking lot. A co-worker used to toss random crap on the floor in the office just to watch him pick it up and scurry to his office to put it away. He was like a mouse with a shiny treasure every time he found something, lol.

Usually I'd trash it without a second thought.

I save it because I have the kind of luck that if I toss it in the garbage, I need it as soon as the garbage is collected for the week but if I save it, I never know where it came from and nothing falls apart.
I've learned not to test fate.

Would depend on the screw. If it was a run of mill screw that I have a whole junk draw full of, in the trash it would go. If it was some fancy screw that looked like a one of a kind, I'd probably toss it in the junk draw along with the 876 other fancy screws already in there.
