Good morning ladies!! I hope your week is going well! I'm holding steady - getting my workouts in and staying on track with my eating. Tonight our local fair opens and our plan is to go. The only issue is that they're calling for rain and thunderstorms so depending on the weather we may/may not be going. I hate the not knowing what the plan is but not much I can do about that. I have a plan as far as fair food goes - dh and I are going to split something and no fries. Fries are my weakness and I have no control so I'm just not going to put myself in the position to fail. DH is on vacation starting tonight so I apologize if I don't get the posts up each day. I don't anticipate missing a lot of days as we're not doing any kind of big trip but I know at least one day we'll be up and out of the house early. Someone else feel free to start the thread or continue posting on the post from the previous day. Today my plan is to get a good workout in - which will include some weights (5 lbers not 10! ) and some cardio. I want to make sure I put in a little extra time today to help offset my fair food. My goal of vacation is to work out at least half of the days. Most of the time when dh is on vacation, I get nothing in as far as exercise but dh has been SUPER supportive of getting my workouts in, even if it's only a 30 min walk. I forgot to mention on Tuesday when I took the kids to see Pan that it was SO nice fitting comfortably into the movie theater seat. SO many years it was super uncomfortable going to the movies because I barely fit in the seat...now I have room to spare. AND I can cross my legs, something I've never been able to do. A couple of nice NSVs that day!! I hope you ladies have a wonderful day!! Keep up the hard work girls! I believe in all of you!

So...I am here to join this group!! LOL
I have decided that it's beyond time to start and get healthy. I have a lot to lose but am looking at it in increments!! I am down 2 pounds from Monday (drop in the 100 pound bucket...LOL).
I have some questions that I know someone can answer. I need new sneakers so the dog and I can walk every day. I have a wide foot and anything that hits the back of my ankles is a no go. Suggestions??
Also...healthy snacks other than the usual fruit/veggies???
Thanks~~

Have a great time brandy327. Enjoy that hubby of yours! He's a keeper. Funnel cake....OMG! It is my weakness for sure. Thank goodness it is not around much. I have my appointment with the sports med doctor today. Can't wait to hear what he has to say about my arm. I am so ready for relief. I have finally decided on a paint color for the interior of our house, so after the doc I am going to stop and but some paint to get started. I am so ready for the change. Someone kindly knocked our mailbox over yesterday. Dh fixed while we were gone to baseball practice and then he installed the new kitchen light I had bought on clearance. He got on a roll and fixed our broken porch light as well. I could seriously kiss the person who knocked the mailbox over. Lol! Generally dh is not a do-er. Have a good day ladies!

Looking at a large weight loss goal in small increments is how I've done it. It's too overwhelming to think about it as a whole, at least it was for me. Even now, I have 40 lbs left and I'm still breaking it up into small goals. As far as healthy snacks, I stick to things like fruits, veggies, nuts, yogurt, deli turkey, cheese.

I need new sneakers so the dog and I can walk every day. I have a wide foot and anything that hits the back of my ankles is a no go. Suggestions?? Welcome!!! Try going to a local running store (not a big box store like Dicks) and get fitted for a pair of shoes. Try on several and go with what feels most comfortable. It will cost more than going to a discount or department store, but a proper fitted pair of shoes is a good motivator to get out and move If you have a Fleet Feet store in your area, try there. Awesome!!! My dog agility got cancelled last night so I went to a yoga class instead. We worked a lot of moves to stretch hips, which is something I need. Tonight, I go to another yoga class I'm also supposed to run three miles (as part of my training plan) but I'm not sure the weather is going to cooperate. They are calling for storms this afternoon and evening. I may have to go to the gym before yoga class to get in my miles. Have a great day everyone!

Why do you say nothing that hits the back of your ankles? I used to feel the same way before I got the correct socks. Now I have no rubbing or blisters. If that is the issue get yourself some running socks with 0% cotton. Game changer for sure. I totally agree! I really like Balega Hidden Comfort for the cushioning; Feetures are good too.
I've had some of my Balega socks for over a year and they get used on a frequent basis. They hold up very well and are worth the price.
ETA: We've been taught that "cotton is rotten" for working out. When exercising, avoid clothing that is 100% cotton. It holds in the sweat and feels heavy and gross. Technical/dri-fit fabrics are going to wick sweat away and feel more comfortable during a workout.

christine58 I also have a wide foot, I think my Brooks running shoes are "E" width. Have you tried having a fitting at a running shoes store? My shoes are running shoes, but I can assure you I'm not running-- just walking-- but the shoes (while an investment) were a game changer when I started to up my distance. New Balance is also known for a variety of width sizes. Just a thought!

I resisted going to a running store because I was just using them for walking (I felt self-conscious going to a running store to be honest), knew they'd be more expensive than buying online, and didn't think it would make that big of a difference. I was so wrong!!! The running store was extremely nice and beyond helpful. I'm a 10.5, which can be really hard to find in big box stores and I usually end up in a 10 or an 11, but they had a huge selection. They pointed out things that I wouldn't be happy with in different shoes I tried on, and we kept looking until we found a perfect fit. In a lot of the shoes, my heel was coming up slightly while walking. They found ones where it didn't do that AND showed me a different way to lace them to prevent that. They also gave me a pair of no-cotton socks, and while I haven't bought more (I don't have an issue with blisters), I must say, they are AWESOME. I won't buy plain cotton socks in the future when I replace those I have. The shoes were about $20 - $30 more than I'd have paid for them online, but I walked away feeling GREAT and like it was worth every single penny because of the amazing service and how well the shoes fit and feel. Now, they aren't the cutest shoes and I liked the look of a lot of the other ones better, which is what I probably would have let sway my decision if I was shopping on my own. But I'm so glad I bought the less-cute but perfect-for-my-feet ones. I also learned how to tell when they're worn out so I know to get a new pair, and with the type of shoes I ended up in (New Balance), next time I probably can buy the latest version online and see if they still work for me. They keep similar models but just change the version. However, I'll still likely go back to the running shop every couple of pairs just to have everything looked at, make sure there isn't something newer or better for my foot, etc. It was a great experience.

And keep in mind....
Those working at a running store have seen every size and shape. Many of the employees were another size and shape at one time. I have found runners to be such a supportive and encouraging group. I have never felt judged or looked down on by a runner.
I think in general runners realize the struggle is real. Even the most fit runner has days where it is just downright hard.

My local running store is staffed by runners; they enjoy running and want to see others enjoy getting out and moving as well. Some are lifelong runners but others started as adults and have overcome their own obstacles to get where they are today. I was apprehensive when I first started running, but I quickly learned that runners enjoy seeing other runners be successful.

My running store also has walking shoes. Good luck!

I have been plugging along with my Whole30- day 18! I'm not that bored with food but I started my period Monday and I have been craving sugar more this week than during any other week. I am sleeping through the night for the first time in months, though, so that is helping me make better decisions and dealing with my cravings. I've come too far to stop now! I have noticed my skin is clearer, my sinus issues are better and my eyes are so much less itchy. I'm able to wear my contacts all day without discomfort. Amazing! I haven't weighed per program rules but I feel better so that is more important to me at this point.

So here's my NSV for the week - I wore out my swimsuit from going to water aerobics! I've been going consistently for just about 10 weeks, and yesterday in the pool I was like "Why is the outer layer of my swimsuit floating so far away from me?? What is going on?" Not too big - but the chlorine ate through the elastic! I had already noticed it on one spot on the back straps, but it wasn't a problem yet. However, after I got out of the pool yesterday - yep, that swimsuit is a goner. That's a huge NSV because I've NEVER exercised consistently enough to wear through a piece of equipment/clothing! For me, it really isn't about the intensity or the results (I do not expect any results from exercise, if anything I expect it to make me hungrier and slow the scale down), it's about the consistency and sticking with it, and finding something I enjoy. I ordered this $20 swimsuit from Amazon - the reviews seem to indicate it is long. I'm tall and need a long swimsuit, but most are so expensive! If I'm going to burn through 4 or 5 a year, I can't handle paying $70 per suit! I know there are soaps and anti-chlorine things out there I could use after each class, but to be honest - just rinsing it is all I can handle. For me, making going as convenient as possible is really important. I go dressed in my suit and wear it home wet, they have cubbies near the pool so I don't have to mess with a lock or going into the locker room, etc. I'd rather burn through a few cheap suits than try to take really good care of one expensive one, for now.

AN WTG on the NSV!!! And super cute suit! I'm still wearing my suit that's 2 sizes too big. It's not flattering AT ALL and it floats up because it's too big. But I just can't put the money out there for a suit that I want. I need one with an underwire support and it HAS to be a tankini with shorts (more than boy shorts - they have to be longer board shorts to cover up excess skin on my legs). I haven't been able to find one in my price range that I like. christine58 A Non-Scale Victory

That's a huge NSV because I've NEVER exercised consistently enough to wear through a piece of equipment/clothing! Hey - that's pretty cool! You've been busy! Is there a local swim shop in your area? The local shops by me often have a lot of suits marked down (previous year's designs???) and can run $25 and under. This site frequently offers deals too. I have a local branch of this store so I can shop in person. thelifeguardstore.com/668-swimwear Swimsuit sizing is so weird. Swimsuit sizing chartsI hand wash my suits with Woolite and hang dry.

I've been so busy with family in town that I've not been focused on the scale...but it's still good news. I'm down 1.5 pounds. I do have a certain number I want to see on my scale, but a more important indicator of my success is how my clothes fit. My project for the afternoon is to go thru my closet, try on some key outfits, and get a sense for where I need to be. I looked at the calendar this morning and was shocked to see that I have just 3 weeks before I'm back to pre-planning, YUCK!! No more wearing baggy shorts and knit dresses; I have to wear real clothes again and very soon. Not happy to think about getting back to school, but it is motivating.

But the 2 or 3 days I did it, the exercises were amazing! I was just too sore afterword...

I got my workout done before noon today. I used my 5 lb weights and was able to get in a solid 15 mins of weights and then I did my C25K W6D2 which was 5 min warm up walk, 10 mins running, 3 mins walking, 10 mins running and then the cool down walk. Got it done without too much trouble! Showered and threw on some comfy clothes until we decide whether or not to go to the fair. The forecast is holding steady saying that at 7pm it's a 70% chance of thunderstorms. I'm thinking we may just end up going tomorrow when the threat of storms is only 20%.

brandy327 The general rule of thumb is 300 miles on a pair of shoes.my running app tracks this for me, but according the running store and everything I have read, you should be rotating at least two pairs of shoes at a time. Get rid of any that make your feet hurt regardless of mileage. Went to see the doc today. X-rays showed arthritis and a none spur in my shoulder, but he does not suspect that is the issue. He believes I have a trapped nerve. I go for testing on the 25th to determine which nerve is trapped meh felt confident that a combination of rest, bracing, and a shot regimine would relieve the pain without surgery. In the meantime no extended planks or push-ups for me. He also gave me a script for anti inflammatory meds.

Any of you runners care to share how you know when your running shoes are worn out? STBC TankTop I asked this question when I got fitted, and his answer was to try to fold them down the midline (like a hot dog bun, the long way). If they have bend that direction, they are definitely worn out. It was pretty obvious between my new shoes and my old once he showed me that, and I periodically check my new ones. That's a lot easier than tracking mileage for me because I do wear my tennis shoes for a lot of different things, not just "pure" exercise and the exercise I do can't necessarily be measured in miles.
