my feet/ankles are swelling. No pain but they ache - I think the aching is from the swelling rather than being a cause of it. No known injuries.
I'm 45, diabetic (type 2 decent but not perfect BG), fairly sedentary but I do manage my 10K steps at least every other day and am working on improving that. I've had knee surgery on my right knee (back in the 90s - reconstructive) but while my right foot/ankle are MORE swollen, they are both swollen. I do have arthritis but not in my ankles (knees/hips) and this doesn't feel related.
Thoughts?

Have you been to the doctor lately? Maybe have your blood pressure checked? DH had edema like you have described (no apparent cause, etc)and it turned out to be sleep apnea, of all things.

We are on week two of the worst kind of heat I can remember in a long time. It is absolutely horrible. I wonder if the swelling has anything to do with that?

Put your feet up. Make sure you are hydrated and make an appointment at your doctor's office. It could be just the heat but can be a sign of renal and cardiac issues so it is worthy of an appointment as this is new onset.

Have you had anything salty like chips or pretzels recently? They can cause water retention.
How is your bp?
Is it hot and humid?
Any trouble breathing?
Dizziness?
Normal urine volume and color?
If you can explain it with something else and you have no other unusual symptoms, put your feet up, if possible above your head, like lying on the floor and putting them up on stacked pillows. If that does not help or you have other symptoms, call your doctor

Sandie - last visit was Jan - I'm due (over due really but only by a couple of weeks) for the next one melissa - thank you - I'll make an app't (I'm due for one anyway, I think) and I'll ask gsquaredmom - thanks Have you had anything salty like chips or pretzels recently? They can cause water retention. No - based on MFP sodium intake is well under the siggested max. How is your bp? it was fine at my last app't - I'll check it at the grocery store tonight (I know...not the most accurate but...) Is it hot and humid? YES as anxiousmom said - this is week 2 of super hot temps here (she's not far south of me) high 90s and heat indexes well above 100 Any trouble breathing? no - unless I'm bent over (like to tie shoes or pick something up from the ground - I bend from the waist due to my knee rather than squat down - then I get short of breath (I am fat)) Dizziness? no Normal urine volume and color? yes and I'm drinking plenty Thank you all!

Can you be in air conditioning and avoid the heat and humidity? It could very well be that.

Okay, I just saw my doctor for swelling in the ankles with no apparent cause. Mine don't hurt or even ache. It just looks like my feet have the mumps, because it's the outer ankle that's swelling. I first noticed it when I had pnuemonia and it worried me then because I thought I had read that a complication of pneumonia can be some sort of heart failure and I thought I had also read that heart problems can present as swelling in the ankles. (Oh, good, I see melissa said so, too. ) At that time, they told me that the steroid I was on could be the cause, so keep an eye on it and let them know if it didn't get better after I was off the steroid for a bit. Well, I kept noticing it and finally went in. The PA mentioned about a bajillion things it maybe could be, most of them unlikely, although she did note that sometimes the veins just don't work quite as well as they used to... but they ran bloodwork to check various things. My results came back justthisside of anemic, so she started by having me take iron pills daily. I forget why they said anemia can cause the swelling. It does seem to be helping some, but not totally. Our next step will be compression stockings, I think. (I also think in my case it is at least partially related to weight gain from when I was sick-- it's a sign I need to get the weight back off. And drink some more water-- I'm supposed to be aiming for 64 oz daily.) So, my two suggestions are (1) are you on any steroids right now for anything? and (2) maybe have your bloodwork checked.

@eddie-n-Harley - I'm sorry you're dealing with swollen ankles too. No steriods here but I'll check on my bloodwork - I've had anaemia in the past but not recently but my cycles are coming more frequently (yay) so it's certainly a possibility. gsquaredmom - I'm mostly inside but my a/c is struggling to keep up with the current heat so it's not as cool inside as one might wish during the day (it does ok at night when it cools down outside a bit)

When my father was ill and his ankles swelled, the doctor told him he was low in potassium and told him to eat more bananas. Sure enough, that fixed it. Weird eh?

I went for a run last night and was done after 1.5 miles. My legs hurt. I couldn't figure out why I was so achy and puffy feeling (?). Then I remembered the 3 big ass margaritas I had at happy hour thursday ( I rarely have them and prefer cold beer). So I'm going to chill out with the salt, suck down lots of fluids the next couple days and hopefully that will help. (lots of heat and humidity here too).

I'm so glad you mentioned this, the same thing happened to my FIL. He ended up being VERY sick, though, couldn't hardly get around & spent several days in the hospital. Turned out his potassium was dangerously low.
Something to ask about, but if it was what my FIL had, you'd already be at the ER. (so don't panic )

Yes, I don't think you have to be very out of balance in potassium for it to happen. It's worth looking into, and taking a little more potassium isn't going to do any harm.
