I've been taking swimming lessons for several weeks now, my instructor is really nice and tells me that I'm a natural swimmer and I feel like I'm doing really well. At lessons there are at the most four people in the pool and I love having the space to just swim. However I went swimming with my husband today and the pool was packed, turns out I'm terrified of other people being in the water. I was so stressed that they would bump in to me and I wouldn't be able to get my footing and I'd go under What a ridiculous fear, I feel so stupid! I know this is something I need to just get over or I won't be able to do something I enjoy. Does anyone else have fears that seem silly even to them? How do/did you get over them?

I have one that I didn't develop until about 10 years ago. I am afraid to shut/open my car door at a gas pump. I just have seen images of gas pump explosions, so it freaks me out. I never open or close it when the pump is going or attached to the vehicle, but is still bothers me.

I can stand at the top of a skyscraper and look down no problem. Make me stand on a ladder taller than three steps? Total complete body shaking fear. I don't get it. Maybe because if I fall from a skyscraper or a mountain I'm dead, but if I fall from a ladder I'll probably break a bone.

Mice I hyperventilate just thinking there might be one in our house. lainey keep up with the swimming lessons and as your skill level and confidence improves so will your level of comfort with other in the water with you. My mom was irrationally afraid of water and swimming too but she made sure that we were proficient swimmers in fact I was a lifeguard and instructor through high school and my early 20's I never could help my mom get over her fear though.

Congrats to you! I have the same fear as you about swimming. I took lessons as a child and hated it. I did not want to be around others. Dh taught our kids to swim and I've always been on the sidelines. I've thought about taking lessons as an adult, but really don't want to be in the water.

I am afraid of worms which is silly, but if I see one while gardening (which happens often of course) I jerk my hand away instinctively. I sometimes think I should just make myself pick some up and hold them and somehow get used to them, but even the thought of doing that freaks me out.
I'm also afraid of leaving my house unlocked or leaving things on that I think could catch the house on fire while I am away. It is such an compulsion to check things multiple times before leaving the house that I wonder sometimes if I am developing some sort of mental illness that needs to be treated. I never used to be that way at all. It came on about the same time as menopause so I wonder if there's a connection.

For some reason, stairs scare the life out of me. I can go up and down a few stepss but I can not look over the rail. If a stair case is open between the steps, it makes me nauseous and I have a hard time walking up or down them. My youngest DD and SIL lived in an apartment and the steps were on the right side of the wall. On the left were the steps going down. There were only 5 or so steps to the landing in front of her apartment but I could NOT walk on those steps. I tried several time but became physically ill each time. Needless to say, I was never in their apartment. Thankfully they now live in a bottom apartment.

If a stair case is open between the steps, it makes me nauseous and I have a hard time walking up or down them. I'm with you on that fear! My brother lived in an apartment where the stairs also had no rail to hold on to, that scared the living daylights out of me. ETA Thanks for sharing your fears, I was going to like posts but thought it might seem like I'm liking your fears!

My husband says no one else in the whole world is afraid of finding snakes in the toilet at night and I should stop but I don't believe him and will continue to pee with the light on.

Stairs make me sick to my stomach now. Even just watching someone go down a steep staircase quickly on Tv makes me nervous. I fell 9 months ago and shattered my tibia. It's been a long road and I'm still recovering. I was being careful, but I still fell and so now they freak me out.

Show him this: Snake bites man's penis in terrifying toilet encounter. Be warned, there are photos, not of the actual, you know, bite, but there's some blood. Oh, there is also a video that will auto play. And here is one that DIDN'T bite the dude. Another snake in a toilet.

I had the craziest fear considering I live in Southern CA (the land of little to no public transportation). I was scared to death to drive freeways after something happened a few years ago. I would take side streets to San Diego (40 miles). It was awful.
It's mostly gone now. I used to not be able to drive a certain stretch at all (even after some places got better) because it was 8 miles of no off ramps. I did it the other day and did fine.
The thing that got me over it for the most part was getting a driving job. I had that until March and now I'm a Lyft driver. The other night, I got a call late at night and had to drive the young lady quite far into an area I've never been. I thought "oh crap" but I managed (now am trying to only drive during daylight hours).

I'm terrified of the dentist. I'm ashamed of it, but that's just how it is. So I avoid going. Which I know is not the productive adult solution.

Leaving something on that will set the house on fire. I don't care about my "things" but I have pets and that's what scares me.

The eye doctor and suspension or other big bridges.
I will go to the dentist 10 times before I will go to the eye doctor. At least at the dentist they give you the laughing gas.
I have a reoccurring dream of me driving a car and it flies off the side of a bridge.

I am afraid of people out in public wearing white mouth coverings. I tell myself they are medically fragile and only protecting themselves but myself refuses to accept that. I become terrified they have some raging disease that I will catch if I get within 50 feet of them.

I am nervous to get on a moving floor, like at the airport or especially like at the end of an escalator. It makes me anxious every single time. ETA - there is a moving floor at our ski park - it goes from the lodge over a hill to the first lift. I can go flying down a hill on a snowboard but am terrified to get on the magic carpet (what we call it). I often take off my board and walk over the hill to avoid it.

Frogs.
When I was about twelve some boys held me while another put a frog in front of my face. I began projectile vomiting. They were so frightened they ran to get my mother. I have no idea why I am so afraid. But I am.

Revolving doors scare me to death.
I am also physically unable to touch pet food or treats with my bare hands.

Spiders and heights. I don't really want to get over my fear of spiders. I'm better than I used to be, and I'm ok with killing them myself if they are about the size of a quarter or smaller. Unless it's a black widow, They scare me at any size. I could never be on survivor because I would be a basket case with the spiders.
Heights are funny for me. I get weak and shaky when I'm up high. I can look out an airplane window and be fine, but being on the top level in a two-story plane would freak me out. Being on upper floors in houses and buildings is fine, but any kind of a balcony or over-look makes me nervous. My BFF has a wide landing/hallway between the top of the stairs and the kids' rooms, and it overlooks the living room on one side. It has a tall railing, but I get sick nervous every time her kids get close to it. I don't even like them running from the stairs to their room because I have a fear they will run into the railing and it will break loose, which is ridiculous because it's not even in the same direction that they are running.

Well obviously your husband hasn't met me. Every night when I get up to use the bathroom for a second I think "oh I won't turn on the light this time" but then reason sets in (ha) and I think if I don't check, this will be the time the snake is there!

Snails, slugs, octopi...I won't snorkel because I am afraid of something brushing up against me. It's not fear, in that I think the slimy thing will actually hurt me; it's more like completely irrational revulsion that causes me to panic. It's so silly!

I can swim just fine but I still have an irrational fear of deep water, especially if I'm trying to do something like snorkeling. For some reason, I simply cannot put my face in the water and breathe through the snorkel thing without freaking out and hyperventilating.
