It seems like an antiquated law. I would find it annoying because I'd have to wait and it's not a hard thing to do. The main thing that would bother me was the surcharge for using a credit card. I rarely have cash on me.

We drive to Oregon every year for vacation and, while most of the time it is fine, sometimes it takes Forever to get gas if the station is busy. Yeah, that would be a pain. Save

If stations are busy, you have to wait, regardless of who's pumping the gas. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ It's official, peas will complain about anything.

Let's say there are 10 Pumps at a gas station with 10 Cars wanting to fill up. You would have to have ten employees to make it as fast as it would be to fill your own tank. Yes, they come over and start one person's gas and go on to another but you have to wait for them to come back when your finished and take care of paying. There's no way it's even close to the same thing. Oregon's beatiful and we adore the coast but sorry, the gas stations Stink.

I lived in Oregon and was in my 40's before I ever pumped my own gas.

I have never been to a gas station where a car for every pump arrived at exactly the same time. Even at the busiest times, when there are lines, some cars need less gas and finish first and leave and anothe pulls forward. It's a constant stream of coming and going, not all arriving at once. I literally don't remember the last time I pulled up to a pump and had to wait more than 30 seconds for an attendant. I'm much more often forced to wait because of the idiot other drivers who park too far away from the pump and so no one behind them can get out.

If stations are busy, you have to wait, regardless of who's pumping the gas. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ I cannot remember the last time I had to wait for a (self-serve) gas pump to free up at any station in any city in any state I've ever been to. Self-serve gas doesn't bother me in the slightest. But then again, I like self-serve checkouts at the store, too.

I grew up when full-service gas stations were the norm. They checked your oil and washed your windows. Fast forward to a few years ago when we were in New Jersey and stopped for gas. I knew they pumped the gas for you in N.J., but I was a little flabbergasted when the attendant stood there afterwards with his hand out ... for a tip!! Is that normal, to tip the guy? The full-service stations from my childhood never asked for a tip!

No that is not normal.

Whilst I LOVE the idea of full service (I haven't seen that here since the 80s) I would not like to have to wait around for an attendant. I have never been to a gas station where a car for every pump arrived at exactly the same time. Even at the busiest times, when there are lines, some cars need less gas and finish first and leave and anothe pulls forward. It's a constant stream of coming and going, not all arriving at once. I'm much more often forced to wait because of the idiot other drivers who park too far away from the pump and so no one behind them can get out. That's not my experience, but perhaps I'm just in a busier area. It is not uncommon for me to pull into a service station to get petrol on the way home from work to find all 16 pumps full, with a second car waiting in a lot of them. They would need 16 attendants to make it as quick as it is for self serve. But still, I do miss full service. I hate having to put petrol in my car (I'm lazy).

You don't have to use cash in Oregon, only AM/PM charge for using your card. Your debit card is considered cash at every other gas station I have been too.
I don't mind pumping my own or having full serve. They both take the same amount of time on average. I commute 5 times a,week between Oregon and Washington, so I have plenty of experience with both. Gas tax seems to be less in Oregon though, gas is,typically cheaper there.

We still have some stations in New Zealand have attendants pump your gas. I'm impatient, so I wave them off and do it myself. It's quicker.

To the OP: I come from NY (LI, specifically), where I've been accustomed to gas stations that had self-serve AND full-serve. I loved it! The self-serve was a bit cheaper. We only had full-serve car washes. Down here in FL, we only have self-serve gas stations, which blows me away! Since people view FL as an "old people" State, what the heck do they do to get gas? I know they have an emergency/disabled button to ask for help filling up, but I can imagine that it would take forever. I've stood outside in the severe heat, in some areas that I felt very vulnerable (I now carry pepper spray at least!), and I'd take standing in the cold any day! This sucks!!!
I will NOT wash my car by myself if I'm in a rush or if it's 98 degrees out. Finding a full-serve car wash here is nearly impossible and it's expensive. So strange...........

I don't mind pumping or not pumping. But it is slower/gets backed up in Sweethome at the Safeway. There is usually only one or two attendents and it's a fairly long wait when it's the jamboree weekend.

So are gas prices higher to pay for the attendants? Pumping gas is one of those mindless activities I enjoy. I wouldn't like it if someone did it for me, but I wouldn't complain.

I live in Eastern PA and we don't have any laws about self-serve (well, except that you have to be 16), but we still do have some stations that are only full-serve, and many stations that has the option of full-serve. The attendants at the full-serve places/pumps will wipe your windows for you if they have time, or if you ask, but they don't check the tires at all. And they don't expect a tip. Full-serve can be priced higher than self-serve because it's considered a convenience, just like we pay more on a turnpike service plaza because we don't have to bother getting on and off an exit someplace like you do on other highways. And trust me, in some ways it can be a convenience. Sideways driving rain, full-serve sounds good to me! Same when the wind chill is down there in the negative 20s. Or when you're all dressed up or you're feeling sick, etc., etc. Full serve stations or pumps are common enough around here that I actually know a handful of people who easily manage never to pump their own gas (without living in OR or NJ)---just because they don't like to do so. Also, some gas stations will charge you less when you're paying with cash whether you pump it yourself or not. Most don't have different prices, but in towns with several stations, you're bound to find one or two stations that offer a discount for cash sales---particularly smaller places.

I live close enough to OR that I could get gas there with every fill up. I don't. It's cheaper in my state and I don't like waiting to for someone else to do it. Yes, you often have to wait. Most gas stations in my area only have one attendant, even the station with ten pumps. They get you started quickly, but it takes several minutes after it's done before they come back and get the hose out of your car.
Also, I've never seen a surcharge for using debit/credit at a gas station. there is one that offers a discount for cash, but the sign advertises the credit price.

The full-service stations from my childhood never asked for a tip! No. I have never seen that and I've lived in NJ most of my life. That's very odd. I once tried to tip a guy who went above and beyond cleaning the windshield and all my windows that were caked with salt in a storm and he refused it. I rarely ever have to wait for gas. If I have to wait, it's usually because there is not a pump available. Occasionally, I may need to wait to get my credit card back because the attendant did not notice the pump stopped. I don't feel like it takes any more time than when I do self serve in other states 99% of time. Remember that not getting out of the car means you can do other things while getting gas- check your texts, answer emails, etc. I have also always felt that if we got rid of self serve that our prices would not change and more people would be out of work. Yes, some stations are open 24 hours but some are not. The ones on local roads tend to close at night, the ones in high traffic areas are more likely to be open.

Oh, and there are stations that are the same price for cash or charge, others charge more for a credit card.
If you only have pay at the pump, you may not realize that you are actually paying another 5 cents a gallon more for that.

We have a full-serve station in town that I love; sometimes there can be a bit of a wait but I don't mind. The people working there know me, they give cookies out to my dogs, and they don't expect tips, but I do take them a plate of cookies at Christmas time.

Wow, I don't remember the last thread, and I while I remember full service stations, I love pumping my own gas. I do miss the attendants washing my windows and checking tire pressure though. Do that do that at the full service stations in NJ and OR? Yep. Oregon girl here! You can have your gas pumped, windows washed and tire pressure checked and not pay a premium price! How cool! I find this thread very interesting. I don't know how my children would act though. They have always pumped their own gas, and they have not every known anything differently. I have shared this with them, and even hubby was surprised about OR and NJ. He travels the world but not these two states obviously.

There are also no self-serve gas stations in New Jersey. I was just going to ask if New Jersey had them yet. DH and I were suprised to learn that while there almost 20 years ago.

Do that do that at the full service stations in NJ and OR? Not usually in NJ. they are often too busy. But if you ask some will wipe your windshield. Checking tire pressure and oil are long gone, though most gas stations do have the automatic air pumps that check it if you pull over there and do it yourself. Up until about six or seven years ago we still had a full service station in my town. It was in my neighborhood and I would stop by every couple of months so they would check the oil and air pressure. It was kind of sad really when they closed down.

The main thing that would bother me was the surcharge for using a credit card. I rarely have cash on me. Be careful, We are starting to see the surcharge in a lot of different areas. We were on the Coast of Alabama, Tennessee, North Carolina, Nevada and Ohio this year and I've spotted at least one station that had surcharges.
One station here in Cleveland, Oh was charging 20 cents MORE a gallon to use a credit card.
