No self serve gas stations in Oregon.
What I wouldn't give for that in the middle of a Chicago winter.

I think we discussed this here once before. I want to say there was a pea who lived near the Oregon/Washington border and would always try to buy gas in OR.

We drive to Oregon every year for vacation and, while most of the time it is fine, sometimes it takes Forever to get gas if the station is busy.

There are also no self-serve gas stations in New Jersey.

Hahaha, we try to make it through OR without having to buy gas. Many years ago we were in a very busy big, multiple pump station and DH hopped out, put in the hose and started filling the tank. The attendant ran over, spitting mad, and DH gave him a friendly wave and said "no problem, you're busy, I've got it". The attendant threatened to have him arrested ![](//storage.proboards.com/5645536/images/pd7N3dneptLj3pbgz5Gd.jpg) . DH & I were looking at each other, thinking WTF? We shared this story with Seattle friends that were from Portland and they died laughing and told us that there is no self-serve in OR. The attendant might have shared that little tidbit with us. FTR, they always have a full tank of gas before crossing into OR. IIRC, New Jersey is also a no self-serve state.

I remember the big thread from a few years ago. But I've forgotten why they are a no self serve state. What's the purpose?

I am not sure there are any full service stations anywhere near me! I haven't seen one around here in ages.

I remember the big thread from a few years ago. But I've forgotten why they are a no self serve state. What's the purpose? I believe it has to do with jobs. I read they had or were trying to amend the law so that small convenience stores in rural areas can let customers pump their own gas during late evenings. This change us fir safety reasons.

There have been several reasons that the self serve movement did not make it in NJ. Safety is often quoted, jobs is another reason. They tried again recently here and it failed. Expense was another because you need different pumps, but most places now have those pumps (shh.. don't tell anyone). The law here in NJ goes back to 1949. The law itself actually talks about safety as the main reason. When they tried to get rid of that law once again, there were a few articles on how the law against self serve came to be. Apparently, there was a gentleman's agreement between a few station owners to sell gas at 21 cents a gallon (something like that). Another guy came around and opened up a bigger station than anyone else and charged only 18 cents a gallon but you had to pump the gas yourself. People lined up for the savings. The other owners tried to run him out of business. Someone shot up the station, so the guy installed bulletproof gas. Eventually, someone took it to the statehouse and a law was quickly passed prohibiting self serve gas as it is not in the best interest of the public.
Gas is also often cheaper in NJ than it is in other parts of the country. Don't know if that is true or not in Oregon. We have some of the lowest gas taxes in the country, though Christie's legacy was nearly adding 23 cents of tax per gallon.
I'm happy to not pump my own gas. It's always a novelty when I am out of state and have to do it myself.

Wow, I don't remember the last thread, and I while I remember full service stations, I love pumping my own gas. ![:)](//storage.proboards.com/5645536/images/MNrJDkDuSwqIMVw33MdD.jpg) I do miss the attendants washing my windows and checking tire pressure though. Do that do that at the full service stations in NJ and OR?

Wow, I'm not sure why it bothers some people to have your fuel pumped for you. When we traveled through OR last fall for two weeks it wasn't a big deal to us and we never waited more than a few minutes for an attendant. Although we did stop once in a small Deliverance looking town in Eastern OR, and DH walked in and the attendant told him to just fill up himself and "let me know how much it is when you come back in to pay." I guess she was watching TV and didn't want to miss anything.
ETA: And they washed the windows, but no oil or air check.

It's because of jobs and back in the day many states did this. It was because you had to be trained to put in flammable liquid. OR and NJ have kept it. They did pass something in OR I believe that in places of a smaller population you can do your own.

Do that do that at the full service stations in NJ and OR? Not usually in NJ. they are often too busy. But if you ask some will wipe your windshield. Checking tire pressure and oil are long gone, though most gas stations do have the automatic air pumps that check it if you pull over there and do it yourself.

I live in a small coastal town in California and we have a Chevron where they pump the gas for you. We go there about 99% of time. It's a few cents higher than other gas stations, but they are super friendly and quick so we go there instead.

Here in No. Maine most stations still have attendants that pump the gas. Some of the stations (Citgo) have signs that if they forget to ask to check your oil and you need it, the first quart is free.
they always clean our windshields, too.
this is very nice in the winter time!!

WA resident here. When we travel through Oregon we find it annoying. It does take longer than doing it yourself. You have to wait for them to come over and wait again when it's finished pumping. It's just easier and quicker to do yourself.

The keeping jobs part aside, how is pumping your own gas a safety issue? I mean it's gas so yea it is flammable, but 48 states seem to do it okay. Well most of the time. Not asking with snark just not sure what I'm missing.

I used to live in OR and it's one of the things I miss the most. I loved having someone else pump the gas, I didn't care if it took longer. Now when I go back to visit, I'll almost always get out and try to pump the first tank out of habit. Then I get spoiled and when I leave and cross the border back into CA, the first time I'm usually sitting in my car for a few minutes before it dawns on me that no one is coming to do it for me anymore. ![:(](//storage.proboards.com/5645536/images/mYSUyHtG9Jrcmm_ydVcK.jpg)

Mostly though, they just pump the gas. It's been that way in NJ all my life and honestly, if they did away with it I think the prices would stay the same and people would lose their jobs, so there would be no point to it. SaveSave

Well, I knew - because I'm from Oregon! I miss having someone else pump my gas for me, but I do not miss having to wait in long lines while only 1 or 2 attendants are on duty.

It's creepy, and the only gas station closes around 7pm so you're SOL if you're running on fumes. You don't want to know how I know. LOL

So are the gas stations open 24 hours? Seems like that would be a bigger safety issue if you can't fill up because the station is closed because there's nobody to pump your gas.

I'm an Oregonian who has been in Washington the last several days and ugh, I loathe pumping my own gas. I fill up at the last possible station before crossing into WA and get as little gas as humanly possible until I'm back where we handle gas the civilized way ![;)](//storage.proboards.com/5645536/images/Q_m8lDOvc_3Le3r1GKdf.jpg) I can't imagine being annoyed by having someone do a stinky, dirty, unpleasant task for you for free.
