I have been living in my old navy tanks this summer. We go back to school next Tuesday. It is going to be HOT!
Is there such a thing as work appropriate tanks or sleeveless tops that function like a tank? I am not worried about the tightness. I am more worried about the width of the straps.
Any suggestions?

The sleeveless shells at Christopher and Banks are nice and non-tank-ish. Jewel neckline, so not as low cut as a tank.

I get some that are just a tiny bit over the shoulder. Or that are flouncy over the shoulder. I don't think a true tank is appropriate once the kids get back, but I am all for them on work days.

J.Jill has a good selection of tanks that would be appropriate.

I think you have to go with "shell" style or cap sleeves. No halter, no spaghetti. I wouldn't wear anything that isn't at least three fingers wide, if that makes sense. Because, I don't know, our shoulders are distracting or something. Anyway, I'd want to be in line with student dress code, as I'm a teacher. But, our building is FROSTY, so typically I'd wear a shell with a cardigan or something over it, because we usually freeze until we leave the building, when we want to spontaneously combust.

I'm an administrator at a school and ran an orientation this morning in a sleeveless top. The brand is Charter Club - I think that's a Macy's brand - and the shoulder seam is almost three inches wide. It suits our dress code fine but YMMV.

Do you have a Uniqlo near you? I love their tanks & t-shirts.

I have 2 shirts that are tank tops but over the top of them is another flowy fabric top. So I get coverage on my arms but the circulation of a tank.

Are the kids allowed to wear them? Our official rule is no spaghetti straps for staff and students. I just don't feel comfortable in those. Generally I have a sweater on except for recess duty. Our rooms are like living on an iceberg. Lol!

Old Navy has several that I love, one of my favorites is the trapeze high-neck top - I have it in two colors and a pattern - and it's now on sale for $12.97.
Also, I haven't tried them, but the pin-tuck swing tank and relaxed cutout top are cute and might fit the bill. And the relaxed pom pom tank too.
There is an online sale that ends today - 40% off with the code COOL40. (I ordered a couple of things this morning myself!)

Try Talbots. Their big sale is going on right right. Actually, now that I think about it, are you near Cincinnati? (I promise I'm not a spreadsheet keeper - not sure why that rings a bell?)... If so, I scored big time on sleeveless shirts at the Monroe Talbots outlet this time last year. Like $4 a pop and they're truly sleeveless - perfect width for school.

If you happen to be in the Midwest and live in the vicinity of a Meijer store, check there. Yes, a grocery store. I have gotten several fabulous sleeveless tops there this summer that are colorful, breezy and work appropriate. My office is freezing so I usually wear a light sweater or jacket over sleeveless stuff, but I could go without and look fine. Did I mention they are cheap, too?

May I just say how much I enjoyed seeing the title of your thread next to your username?

Another vote for Talbots. Nice looking sleeveless tops, not really tank tops. But I like them to wear with cardigans and they still look classy alone.

May I just say how much I enjoyed seeing the title of your thread next to your username? Yes! I was like, "Uh, aren't you the expert here?" Personally, I am not comfortable wearing sleeveless stuff to school, but I hear you on the heat - my classroom last year had "iffy" air conditioning and huge, south-facing windows, and it was often in the mid-80s in there (I bought a digital thermometer because building maintenance kept trying to tell me that the temperature was "within the acceptable range.") Cap sleeves are as short as I go, but honestly, I have some loose cotton tunics with 3/4 sleeves and I think they're just as cool. Think very loose and airy! LOL

I think you have to go with "shell" style or cap sleeves. No halter, no spaghetti. I wear a lot of these types of shirts. The Loft outlet had some great ones in like 15 different colors.

Land's End has "tank" tops that have wide shoulder fabric...and usually a cardi to match. I wear the tanks as they keep my bra strap from showing. I think they are very appropriate and I'm in my 50's.

We allow sleeveless, but not "tanks" or "spaghetti straps". There are a lot of sleeveless blouses that are work appropriate. I would double check the dress code for the company as well.

Loft always has some really nice dressy sleeveless tanks. I have several that I tuck in to skirts or dress pants for church. They have solids and prints.

J.Jill has a good selection of tanks that would be appropriate. TankTop - I was also going to suggest JJill and right now they have 40% off their clearance prices with lots of really nice tanks included. www.jjill.com
