Update: So I ended up ordering the Oxo set. It is AWESOME. It cleaned my cup/straw so well that I ended up digging out all my water bottles and going on a cleaning binge. Yes, that's how I spent Thursday night. Don't be jealous Anyway, I highly recommend this! Original Message: I have one of those insulated cups with the lid and hard plastic straws. It's my everyday cup I use at work mostly for either tea or diet coke, and it's clear. How the heck do you clean the straw? I've soaked it (as much as I can soak it in the office kitchen), I've washed it in the top rack of the dishwasher, and it still looks a bit stained. Is there a tool for this? I'm really starting to get grossed out!

I had to go and get a bag of pipe cleaners from michaels. In soak the straw in some bleach then scrub with the pipe cleaner then soak again. I toss the PC after each time since they rust easy. I tried a baby bottle brush but it didn't work for me.

Thanks, y'all. Who knew they made special brushes?! While searching for the one linked upthread on Amazon, i found the Oxo waterbottle cleaning set. It has the straw brush, plus, a long brush for getting to the bottom of a water bottle, plus a little detail brush. The smallest things make me happy!

You should be able to find replacement straws also. They do get pretty gross after a while!

throw in a couple of denture cleaning tabs and the fizziness will clean out the stains and dirt from the nooks and crannies. wait till all the fizzing stops, let it sit for a few more minutes then rinse and dry.

I have one of those cups too, and I hardly use it because of the straw cleaning issue. It really grosses me out. My quirk, I know. I have a big issues with any of those straws from the old sippy cups and water bottles my kids used too.
My solution was to buy a box of disposable straws to use with my insulated cup. They work just as well and I can just toss the straw when done.

Yeah I've never gotten into the reusable straws trend. If you're drinking coke, why not buy the individual sized bottles?

I run hot water through it and block from my mind the reality of how lame that attempt at sanitation actually is.

I switched all my Tervis tumblers from the tops that use the straws to the "sippee-cup" tops. I like those better anyway. I never use straws in my regular glasses so it suited me to not use in the insulated tumblers either.

I shoot liquid dish soap in the straw while I hold my finger underneath the bottom hole and run the hot water over it, until it shoots up like a fountain. I will also soak it after adding the soap the same way and dunking it in the cup with sudsy water.
For some reason I feel the newer straws are so much cleaner than the older version. I never have a problem. My nose tells me if something is clean or not and these straws look and smell ok.
I am infamous for throwing something out that I cannot scrub. These straws have survived my brutal pickiness.

long spoonI have spoons like this. Mine have a handle that is a little thinner. I put dish detergent in the straw and wrap the spoon in a paper towel. I put the spoon in the straw and rinse when clean.

I just put the straw sticking up in the silverware holder in the dishwasher. It always comes clean. Does your dishwasher not clean it well?

I just put the straw sticking up in the silverware holder in the dishwasher. It always comes clean. Does your dishwasher not clean it well? the holes in the utensil basket are just a tad too big, so the straw just goes right through. I had the bright idea of putting over one of the pegs in the top rack, but DUH! The peg just fills up the straw so nothing gets clean

How gross. I'm so sorry for your daughter! Ick! I found a bag of disposable straws at IKEA that work well. I fell like at least I'm not throwing away water bottles.

Yeah I've never gotten into the reusable straws trend. If you're drinking coke, why not buy the individual sized bottles? Because I *must* drink my diet coke over ice. Plus, I also use it to make my green tea in the afternoons.

Ever week or so, DH puts all our reuseable cups in the sink with hot water and throws in a dishwaher tab. It fizzes for about 30 minutes and then we run them through the dishwasher.

Oh how I wish I had that when I tossed many cups with built in straws. I've pretty much banned them from my house for fear of the crud that grows inside them. What a nifty gadget!
